Whoopi Goldberg Reaches Out to Readers

Whoopi Goldberg

I’ve been reading — and it’s taken me a long time to figure out how to work this doggone computer,  I’m not very good at it — the various comments that have been made on the wOw site especially to things that I’ve said I believe. One of the greatest things I want to tell you is I appreciate everybody’s support. Some things that I read, though, kind of distressed me — like a response to something that I had written by Joanne Selle and Marjorie C., talking really about the black issue — the fact that I brought up race when talking about Sarah Palin’s daughter.

I said I thought if it had been one of Barack Obama’s daughters as opposed to a very nice young white lady it would have been a different response. Well people took to the fact that I made the differentiation by saying a white lady or a white girl and that made the discussion about race. Let me be really clear: You cannot tell me in this country — when you put a white girl next to a black girl and they’re both pregnant — that people are not going to say, “Well, she’s going to end up on welfare.” Or people are going to make those kinds of remarks that we’ve heard made, by the way, over the last 10 to 15 years; at least I have. And maybe it’s because my child got pregnant very early on that I have a distinctive feel about this. My daughter was talked about very differently than other people at the time, and maybe it’s because she was the child of a famous person. I don’t know. But to say that doesn’t come into play is ridiculous. To say that it is using the race card seems very strange to me. It’s an observation about a truism in the United States. They would have been treated differently. Would they have treated Chelsea Clinton the same way they’re treating Sarah Palin’s daughter? I don’t know. It hadn’t occurred to me until this moment that maybe they would have said the same thing about Chelsea Clinton, that she’s young and we have to stand beside her and it’s nobody’s business. Maybe they would have said that. I don’t think so, really, in my heart of hearts, but maybe they would have.

We are always going to disagree about certain things because that’s the nature of human beings. We don’t all think alike, we don’t all talk alike ...

Maybe you have to take a look, and my using a black and white description was not valid. I’ll take that. But I do take offense to Joanne and Marjorie talking about how black people want everything given to them, and how people of color are bitching about the fact that they didn’t get enough from Katrina and how when it happened in Iowa nobody like Oprah or anyone else did concerts for them. I do want to point out to you that I find it interesting you did not refer to the fires in California. Remember the fires in California? Where suddenly the government swooped right in there with money for different communities? Or other natural disasters that have happened — like Florida. You didn’t mention those where the government swooped in. I don’t think you’re accurate, Joanne, in saying that no one helped in Iowa. I don’t think that’s true at all. As a matter of fact, I know it’s not true.

There has been four days and not one of the people on The View has mentioned the remarks that Elizabeth made at the Republican Convention….This would truly be a “hot topic” However it will be a “cold day in hell” before this gets talked about on “Elizabeth’s View” she is being given a pass…..

Hey Whoopi, Kudos on the job you are doing on the View, but I was really disappointed with this video I saw on U tube about one of your co-host’s ( Elizabeth )dissing a guest (Michelle Obama) of the View at a “closed door” fundraising. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4ivObqOjgw I would really appreciate it if you could enlighting me on the policies at you job place as to whether its appropirate to use what happen at work to promote a private function. And also do you think she owes Michelle Obama an apology. I know she didn’t mention her by name but she most certainly implied it. Thanks.

Way to go, Whoopi. I didn’t watch The View, out of protest over the Cindy McCain dinner thing, and I still don’t plan to watch until we know some type of apology has been issued to Mrs. Obama, but my daughter recorded it and told me I should watch the good job you and Barbara did with Sen. McCain. So I acquiesced and watched the tape; I guess Elisabeth probably would defend Mrs. McCain’s refusal to answer the question Barbara asked about the number of homes they own, as long as it not important to the campaign, by Mrs. McCain’s standards…..but then we will not know that because Elisabeth just left her implied innuendo out there about Mrs. Obama. Both Barbara and you asked John McCain some of the tough questions I wanted him to be asked; of course, I was not surprised by his answers, but I appreciate that you asked them.

Whoopi, I know this is an old thread but, just in case you still check the posts I just wanted to say “Bravo” to you, Barbara Walters and Joy Behar for the excellent interview with McCain today. You ladies did not allow him to just get away with talking points, you held his feet to the fire and didn’t back down. I don’t know of any other interview I have seen that was as good. Thanks so much, I really was surprised.

I almost wish I’d seen the View after reading your post DeB, but unless Elisabeth left in “tears” it probably wouldn’t have satisfied me.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE WHOOPI - STOP making everything you say about RACE!!! Is McCain going to “send you back to slavery”???? Are you seriously kidding me? You just HAD to say that….play the RACE card. I am sooooo sick and tired of hearing you talk about it - YOU are defined by the past - NOT ME!! And as for you “going back to slavery” I must have missed that part of your career….were you a slave???? I never had slaves don’t know anyone who did….never used the n word never had the desire nor quite frankly has it ever entered into my head…except for listening to you rant about it and how you OWN it. OK I’m a white woman or would you prefer “chick”. Did you seriously call Sarah Palin a “chick”???? You need to go get another job and get off the air and I really wish you would stop ranting about your “issues” on this website. I joined Wow because I thought it would be intelligent women with open minds talking about important issues. Not spoiled celebrities ABUSING it to talk about their own insecurities and forcing them on me. I’m sorry that you feel the need to constantly remind us all that you are black and “we” have no idea what that is like nor do we have a “right” to question it. God forbid. Why don’t you start your own blog and then you can say whatever you want. But in the meantime try to be a little more modern and up to date and realistic. My objective is to see all people as people. Not define them by race or gender. You might want to look into that…..the only way to move forward Whoopi is to stop focusing on the past.

My objective is to see all people as people. Not define them by race or gender.” That is seriously AWESOME! Unfortunately there are a LOT of people, if not an overwhelming MAJORITY, who make it a point to do just the opposite. You see what I’m saying? Just because YOU personally don’t divide people, doesn’t make it a general REALITY for everyone else. It’s hard to explain unless you yourself ARE part of what is considered a “minority” in this country. Unless you’re living it, you can’t really say that it doesn’t happen, and that bringing it up (or “playing that card” as oblivious folks tend to refer to it) renders the person’s opinions and politics invalid.

Ya know, Whoopie, unless you have a contract, it is okay for you to back out of the internet altogether. They may even have a slow withdrawal program available to help you taper off slowly. I have followed your career for years (not stalker-like, promise), and you have a wonderfully open mind. We could all take a page from your book, before you close it to public scrutiny!

Some years ago, in a discussion among black women and white women, one of the black women said that what she most wanted from whites was for them to “believe her.” I realized that as a feminist, when a woman claimed discrimination, I believed her unless or until there was proof to the contrary, but when a black claimed racism, I wanted proof. Ever since then, I have tried to keep in mind that blacks no more about racism, and are more aware of its daily implications than I will ever be. I think we should start from a position of believing Whoopi, and be grateful that she is willing to speak from the truth of her experience.

AMEN! You can’t KNOW unless you’ve experienced it. I guess it’s easier for a lot of people to just dismiss the idea of a harsh reality than to face the cold hard facts and truth of social injustice.

Whoopi….I don’t know if you actually read all these posts, but I have just one question…if you actually do read this and some of the other blogs about The View with John McCain, do you understand why Rosie left? You don’t have to answer…it was a rhetorical question!

Senator McCain was a brave soul to go on The View yesterday. As a fan of The View since day one, I was particularly taken aback by Ms. Walters’ bullying behaviour. (Perhaps she’s upset because she didn’t get “the get”?) The rolling eyes, sarcastic looks (sans Elisabeth) were unprofessional and mean-spirited. Ask questions by all means, but be respectful to your guest.

I noticed the unprofessional treatment as well - that’s why I can’t/don’t/won’t normally watch the View (which is horrible because I’ve been a huge Whoopi fan most of my life). Even though I detest John McCain, I think it’s cool of him that he’s shown up to more than one interview on the View despite being treated harshly. What made me the most uncomfortable about this particular interview was, yes, Barbara’s bullying. Every time she asked him a question or even spoke to him, she was looking elsewhere. Half of them weren’t even looking into his face. Eye contact is key to making your guests welcome, and I for one felt unwelcome just as an OBSERVER. I loved Whoopi’s slavery comment, though. I see she’s already getting sh!t for it, from people who are supposedly IN the black community. I thought it was an obviously rhetorical question yet a LEGITIMATE COMMENT considering how scary McCain’s extreme fundamentalist ideals tend to seem.

I think it can be very difficult to communicate with others at a core level, because if they *know* what you’re talking about, you don’t have to explain it, and if they *don’t*, they’ll never frigging get it anyhow, until things happen to them and then they *know* experientially—so I think that people default to fears and loves a lot, since that is what they have experienced, and then make the mistake of limiting their perspective and not letting it encompass understanding ‘all fears and all loves’, which would let us all connect more. Good try, though—I *get* it, and see from some comments that many don’t. Best wishes to us all!

Personally, I was proud of Barbara for the first time in a long time. Now if she’d just get rid of Elisabeth I’d buy a TIVO to record the View.
