Whoopi Goldberg Reaches Out to Readers

Whoopi Goldberg

I’ve been reading — and it’s taken me a long time to figure out how to work this doggone computer,  I’m not very good at it — the various comments that have been made on the wOw site especially to things that I’ve said I believe. One of the greatest things I want to tell you is I appreciate everybody’s support. Some things that I read, though, kind of distressed me — like a response to something that I had written by Joanne Selle and Marjorie C., talking really about the black issue — the fact that I brought up race when talking about Sarah Palin’s daughter.

I said I thought if it had been one of Barack Obama’s daughters as opposed to a very nice young white lady it would have been a different response. Well people took to the fact that I made the differentiation by saying a white lady or a white girl and that made the discussion about race. Let me be really clear: You cannot tell me in this country — when you put a white girl next to a black girl and they’re both pregnant — that people are not going to say, “Well, she’s going to end up on welfare.” Or people are going to make those kinds of remarks that we’ve heard made, by the way, over the last 10 to 15 years; at least I have. And maybe it’s because my child got pregnant very early on that I have a distinctive feel about this. My daughter was talked about very differently than other people at the time, and maybe it’s because she was the child of a famous person. I don’t know. But to say that doesn’t come into play is ridiculous. To say that it is using the race card seems very strange to me. It’s an observation about a truism in the United States. They would have been treated differently. Would they have treated Chelsea Clinton the same way they’re treating Sarah Palin’s daughter? I don’t know. It hadn’t occurred to me until this moment that maybe they would have said the same thing about Chelsea Clinton, that she’s young and we have to stand beside her and it’s nobody’s business. Maybe they would have said that. I don’t think so, really, in my heart of hearts, but maybe they would have.

We are always going to disagree about certain things because that’s the nature of human beings. We don’t all think alike, we don’t all talk alike ...

Maybe you have to take a look, and my using a black and white description was not valid. I’ll take that. But I do take offense to Joanne and Marjorie talking about how black people want everything given to them, and how people of color are bitching about the fact that they didn’t get enough from Katrina and how when it happened in Iowa nobody like Oprah or anyone else did concerts for them. I do want to point out to you that I find it interesting you did not refer to the fires in California. Remember the fires in California? Where suddenly the government swooped right in there with money for different communities? Or other natural disasters that have happened — like Florida. You didn’t mention those where the government swooped in. I don’t think you’re accurate, Joanne, in saying that no one helped in Iowa. I don’t think that’s true at all. As a matter of fact, I know it’s not true.

I saw the View and your lovely question leading to something electronic then I thought of Obama’s new ad I had seen earlier that shows … “CANT SEND EMAIL” (with a disco ball and all) and I —- F.O.C. in hysterical laughter, I saw where you were going, I really wanted you to continue but I understand about that man, it really just wasn’t worth it to humiliate him that way since he mentioned something about myspace lololol and all. I give him credit that now he wants to learn a little technology ( HA! ) I really did want want to see him tell the viewers how to send an email though !

Thank you, Whoopi! I wish racist was not so a big part of the American society and yes, we have made great advances but this is still a racist country and will be for many years. And I do like Elisabeth Hasselbeck even though I disagree with her on just about everything. Sherri Shepherd, now, I have a problem. Sometimes she can be sooo dumb. She be scary dumb. Joy Badar is a treasure. But you, Ms. Goldberg, are a great pillar of light in a world of darkness, a voice of wisdom and wit. I cannot help but you to the depths of my soul and thank god for the gift of Whoopi Goldberg. I hope I am not embarrassing anyone. This is just how I feel.

I loved Whoopi’s slavery comment, though. I see she’s already getting sh!t for it, from people who are supposedly IN the black community. I thought it was an obviously rhetorical question yet a LEGITIMATE COMMENT considering how scary McCain’s extreme fundamentalist ideals tend to seem.” By Kryssi K on 09/13/2008 5:31 pm Exactly! McCain falling back on that old rep speak BS about interpreting the Constitution as it was intended by our forefathers would mean nobody in this country would be voting, let alone running for office, except white males who were within what was, whether or not they consciously realized it at the time, the “upper class” (wealthy) of this nation. Yes, they can say that those parts of the Constitution were changed through amendment rather than through court ruling, but they’d be off the mark with that too. There is nothing whatsoever in the Constitution that says a woman must have a baby if she finds herself pregnant against her intentions or wishes. Maybe the Supreme Court in the 1800s would have interpreted it differently than the one who decided Roe v Wade because at that time women were considered little more than the property of either their fathers or their husbands and had few if any rights. In fact, unless I’m mistaken even if she were killed by one or the other he very likely wouldn’t have been punished for it. A case like Roe v Wade would never have made it to a circuit court let alone the Supreme Court. But the Constitution has been amended and women are no longer property. We do have rights. The parts of the Constitution that are being interpreted to say that abortion is unconstitutional are being done so based on religious beliefs. The Constitution expressly guarantees freedom of religion and separation of church and state. So are they saying that religious belief should have more power than the Supreme Court to interpret the Constitution? I certainly don’t think that’s what the founding fathers intended.

In light of the fact that McCain has been lying in a MAJOR way and making the campaign all about distractions instead of the real issues, I feel it was totally appropriate for Barbara to question John McCain in the manner she did. McCain pulled Palin out of nowhere, expects her to be shielded from the press with no questions asked, and cries sexism when legitimate questions are raised. It’s criminal in my opinion. There is way too much at stake in this election to decide that John McCain should be elected President of the United States just because his running mate is a hockey mom. I thank Barbara Walters for her line of questioning, and it’s okay by me if she didn’t get an A+ for interviewing skills this particular time. The results were what counts, and she got results.

I stopped watching the view when Rosie left, and really don’t think that anyone but Whoopi on the show would have got me to watch again. I’m not a big fan of anyone else on the show. I especially dislike watching Elizabeth, as our views on most things are opposites. I give Kudos to Barbara Walters for not sitting back and taking the attitude “we must be nice” to Mr. McCain when he came on the show. If you want to be president, you have to expect that people want their questions answered. I’m really hoping that nothing will come in the way of the ladies expressing what they **really** think about what’s going on in this campaign. This is no time for worrying about hurting someones feelings. I’m sure none of the ladies who are against the McCain/Palin ticket want to have regrets if they should win. Especially if they sat back and bit their tongue instead of presenting their view. I started watching the show recently because I wanted to hear their **view** about the issues. Not a watered down version of their view. Not, let’s be nice and not hurt anyones feelings with our view. I think the View’s audience can certainly benefit from a little education about the issues, and what we’re starting to find out about Sarah Palin’s background. I watched the Charlie Gibson interview, and thought… you’ve got to be kidding. Is America being punked? **This woman** is who you come up with to be the possible leader of our country?” I was actually a little relieved when I saw the interview. I thought, oh, thank goodness she sounds like she’s completely innexperienced. Who in their right mind would vote for her. And then… to find out that people really don’t care that she is unqualified for the job. To read on forums like this that women actually think that it would be OK to have 4 more years of the same mindset in the white house. And that a woman with ZERO foreign policy experience can lead our country at such a critical time as this? I’m sorry, but I can’t - give her more time to show us who she is… She is not going to go from unqualified to suddenly qualified in a month or two. I’ve done my research. I’ve educated myself about what she’s done in the past. Like make rape victoms pay for their rape kits. and alter the truth about earmarks and the bridge to nowhere… and the inhumane cruelty of animals she is a part of in her state of Alaska. Whoopie, please, I’m begging you… don’t keep mum about this women on the view. It’s one thing to write freely on a forum such as this. But it doesn’t reach the volume of people that the View can. Speak up. Please, speak up.

first i want to say those women who were trashing whoopi saying they are black , i don’t believe you all. now if mccain /palin wins people better prepare themselves for some harsh times. whoever would get the job is in for a rough time. i think obama is a brave man who is risking his life knowing there’s a bunch of racist mentally retarded red necks in this country, but to me this shows how much he loves this country. he has great ideas and plans for america. on the other hand there’s mccain and palin (she may very well end up being president) mccain pulled a fast one on the american public. in the final analysis we could have had gore we didn’t want him. we could have had kerry(a real war hero) we didn’t want him. two good men. we woundn’t be in this mess we’re in now. now we have another chance to pick a good man obama. god help us if we choose wrong this time, we will never recover.

(Glad I wasn’t the only one who was skeptical about the haters’ race.) All I know is I’ll have to triple-up on the Xanax if this country gets taken over by people who go to churches that would rather kidnap me and “pray away” my gay than LET ME BE.

sarah palin wants to make abortion illegle putting womens rights back 30 years or so. she is against stem cell research also keeping us from developing cures. this is definetly helping the drug companies. shooting wolves from planes in alaska. also she seems like a war monger to me. she’s one of the good old boys in a dress. i being a former child support worker before i retired. have seen a lot of young women who were raped and victims of incest who couldn’t have an abortion because they couldn’t afford to and under the bush administration government help was stopped consequently unwanted children were born, who entered the system some being supported by welfare funds for years to come. i have had clients who didn’t know what the father looked like beause of rape. sarah palin feels abortion should be illegle which would make it a crime. i’m old enough to remember when it was illegle and women were found in alleys on roof tops where they were placed after botched illegle abortions. do we really want to go back to this? every woman should have the right to governing her own body. what are these women who are supporting mccain/palin thinking? do they have daughters and grandaughters? or are they just stupid?

Dear Whoopi Michael from Australia here. I just wanted to let you know I think you are one of the most wonderful people in the world today. I don’t mean just because you are a celebrity, but because you use your celebrity to help make the world a better place. I truly admire that. I have been a huge fan of your movies, music (the “Sister Act” movies and CD soundtracks), and now on “The View” as well. I don’t get to watch the show as often as I would like, but when I do, I always look forward to seeing you and hearing what you have to say. You are wise, incredibly funny, yet heartwarming when the need arises, and you are beautiful inside and out. With all the hate, violence, and bad stuff going on in the world, it’s always refreshing and uplifting to know there are people like yourself who use their time on TV, in the media, on the internet, and other ways, to help enlighten and inspire people. I’ve been reading your blogs on WOW and I look forward to each and every one. Your humanitarianism and insight is a ray of sunshine to look forward to every time I see you post. As for me, I’m a music journalist from South Australia working for a new online magazine “Living Life Boomer Style” (based in California). http://www.livinglifeboomerstyle.com/ If there’s anyway I can help support you, your causes, or views, I would be honoured to use my column in the magazine to do so. In the meantime, here’s an article I’ve written for you (it mostly focuses on your music): http://musicboomerstyle.art.officelive.com/WhoopiGoldberg.aspx Cheers, Michael

Whoopie…this American society since its conception has been a great mistake, existing in illusion of selflessness and low standards for a few in power. The higher standards are the many with hopeful dreams of justice and national pride. The USA needs a revolution of house cleaning, inside out and from top to bottom. Those found guilty of public crimes should be fined, jailed and lose all the profits they stole. Judges need to be replaced with a computer, no lawyers needed. Anyone with three or more felons go right to jail. Anyone arrested for murder, rape, child abuse should be shuttled to the moon, one way ticket. Lets clean up this nation before its too late….Oh, I just woke up, that was only my dreaming again…sorry. TT

Whoopie, if you see this, know that I like you. I appreciate that you try to bring us together despite all the Rep vs Dem, us vs them, black vs white thing going on. And I like a lot of your movies. I’ll admit I was very disappointed when Rosie left & not all that excited about you taking her place, not because I don’t like you but because the airwaves & democracy needed her. She was a little too strident, but passionate. I realize Rosie probably couldn’t take it anymore. I can’t fault her for that. She tried her best. As you know rich people own the media. Not many rich people are Democrats—(except in Hollywood!). So, we’re bombarded with the Republican “view” each & every day. On the news, on radio & in print—not just tv. We NEED someone who is up to speed on the progressive side to give us a voice in media. And THAT, Whoopie, is why your very nice “let’s all get along & be fair” attitude does not cut it for me on that show. We almost never hear the progressive side & our country has gone so far downhill because the real other side is never heard. I’m not even political but things are so bad—we MUST as citizens get involved & educate ourselves. That means independent news—NOT mainstream media. When they prepare you for the show—they hand you weak arguments. If you spend the time to educate yourself—you’ll have strong arguments! You’ll win people over with your common sense. Think about it.

I’d like to tell wowowow—do not allow men on here. Can’t we have ONE place of our own without their big mouths? If we want to listen to men we can chat with our husbands & boyfriends. I don’t want men to take over on here—whoops—it seems they already have.
