Whoopi Goldberg Reaches Out to Readers

Whoopi Goldberg

I’ve been reading — and it’s taken me a long time to figure out how to work this doggone computer,  I’m not very good at it — the various comments that have been made on the wOw site especially to things that I’ve said I believe. One of the greatest things I want to tell you is I appreciate everybody’s support. Some things that I read, though, kind of distressed me — like a response to something that I had written by Joanne Selle and Marjorie C., talking really about the black issue — the fact that I brought up race when talking about Sarah Palin’s daughter.

I said I thought if it had been one of Barack Obama’s daughters as opposed to a very nice young white lady it would have been a different response. Well people took to the fact that I made the differentiation by saying a white lady or a white girl and that made the discussion about race. Let me be really clear: You cannot tell me in this country — when you put a white girl next to a black girl and they’re both pregnant — that people are not going to say, “Well, she’s going to end up on welfare.” Or people are going to make those kinds of remarks that we’ve heard made, by the way, over the last 10 to 15 years; at least I have. And maybe it’s because my child got pregnant very early on that I have a distinctive feel about this. My daughter was talked about very differently than other people at the time, and maybe it’s because she was the child of a famous person. I don’t know. But to say that doesn’t come into play is ridiculous. To say that it is using the race card seems very strange to me. It’s an observation about a truism in the United States. They would have been treated differently. Would they have treated Chelsea Clinton the same way they’re treating Sarah Palin’s daughter? I don’t know. It hadn’t occurred to me until this moment that maybe they would have said the same thing about Chelsea Clinton, that she’s young and we have to stand beside her and it’s nobody’s business. Maybe they would have said that. I don’t think so, really, in my heart of hearts, but maybe they would have.

We are always going to disagree about certain things because that’s the nature of human beings. We don’t all think alike, we don’t all talk alike ...

Maybe you have to take a look, and my using a black and white description was not valid. I’ll take that. But I do take offense to Joanne and Marjorie talking about how black people want everything given to them, and how people of color are bitching about the fact that they didn’t get enough from Katrina and how when it happened in Iowa nobody like Oprah or anyone else did concerts for them. I do want to point out to you that I find it interesting you did not refer to the fires in California. Remember the fires in California? Where suddenly the government swooped right in there with money for different communities? Or other natural disasters that have happened — like Florida. You didn’t mention those where the government swooped in. I don’t think you’re accurate, Joanne, in saying that no one helped in Iowa. I don’t think that’s true at all. As a matter of fact, I know it’s not true.

What a beautiful experience! To spend time with all these family members and learn about everyone’s life experiences would be overwhelming (for me at least). My “spousal equivelant’s” mother is French - and has worked on their family’s genealogy for several years and even though I don’t have a blood/familiar relationship to any of these people it is fascinating and beautiful to read and study. You are blessed!

You are dead-on, Whoopi. We should be able to talk about race without being accused of “playing the race card.” Race, and racism, still exists. Our culture has made it okay to make one judgement about a pregnant black teen and a pregnant white teen. I think many people thought the thought, checked themselves, and did not express it. But we thought the thought in the first place because we have been taught to do so. Put another way, imagine “Juno” with Raven Simone instead of Ellen Page. Some people are not going to see the same movie anymore. It doesn’t make it right. And will only change when people TALK ABOUT IT! The other side to this is regarding the baby daddy. I was amazed to see this young man paraded in front of the country. All American kid. Hockey star. What a guy. Make this a black male teen, and how would people have reacted to him? Would he now be “typical?” Would you expect him to leave the young lady t raise the child alone? It’s an interesting thought. And, by the way Whoopi, I thought the other 95% of your post was worth talking about, too!

Love you Woopi!! You know there are hundreds and hundreds of us who support you and your beliefs and it is too bad there are those one or two who have to spout off with hurtful remarks. Michelle - I so agree with you regarding your being puzzled by the term “African American.” We need to get rid of that like your friend from Africa and remember that we are all Americans! From my “white blond” grandaughters to my half Latino grandsons to my half black grandchildren. They and we are all simply Americans.

I am one of the bloggers here who is guilty of calling Sarah Palin “Caribou Barbie” and here’s why. The Barbie description calls to mind a lightweight, lots of form, but not much content, and that is certainly what I see in Gov. Palin. I agree, Whoopi, that it’s disrespectful, and I won’t use it here anymore; however, the fact remains that Sarah Palin is a political lightweight who has blatantly lied to the American public and who is currently taking a crash course in politics because she is not prepared to undergo the scrutiny of interviews and questions, let alone assume the office of Vice President of the United States. She did not have the grace and intelligence to say, “thank you for considering me at the last minute for this office, but I am ill-prepared. I am the new governor of a state with a tiny population. The only other experience I’ve had was as mayor of a hamlet. I know nothing about foreign policy. I know nothing about the economy. I have some problems with ethics and am under investigation right now. It would not be doing right by this country to have me on the Republican ticket this year. Maybe by the next election, I’ll be up to speed, but right now it would be doing this country a great disservice to make me John McCain’s running mate.”

Maurine, I suspect the McCain’s people talked her into it and after giving it some consideration, she thought “Carpe Diem” This will be a crash course in politics, foreign policy, and navigating a bigger stage … not to mention, consultation with a new stylist.

Maurine as usual you hit the knucklehead right on the bean—thank you for you honesty and accuracy. Guilty—hell she’s fair game—she and McCain made themselves fair game at the convention by all the name calling attacks they engaged in. So If Caribou Barbie can’t stand the hot water maybe she needs to get the hell out!.

I completely agree Frank. For too many years Democrats—me included in the past—have tried to be the nice, inclusive ones, negotiate with the other side even during the Contract ON America, and Tom Delay/The Heritage & Coors Foundations writing and printing a booklet and sending it to key GOP activists around the country with the opening premise that “We are not going to negotiate with liberals. We are going to turn liberal into a dirty word. We are going to use nearly Stalinist tactics to wipe liberals off the face of the Earth.’ The Eisenhower GOP is a thing of the past. There are the good guys like Chuck Hagel. But cynical Rovian/Fox tactics still define and drive the party. They have collectively destroyed the US and we are hanging on a thread and McCain’s very Rovian pick and tactics have proved just what they are up to. 2000 and 2004 proved what they are up to. I will call ‘em as I see them. McCain’s choice of Palin and Palin herself deserve nothing but contempt, and I have nothing but contempt for them and will express that exactly as I see fits. The other side has done nothing but belittle, besmirch, devalue and dismiss Obama-Biden….so give me a break. Caribou Barbie is the LEAST of it. Hitler existed and did all the harm he did because the people allowed it. Bush existed and did all the harm he did because the people allowed it. McCain-Palin are dangerous to the US every recovering its Consitutional law, to solving global warming and developing true energy independance and alternatives, and recovering our economy. Neither are fit for the job. Caribou Barbie says a lot in two words, but hardly enough. She’s an ignoramus intent on teaching creationism who is embroiling the Ditto-heads with her God-talk when this country is based in Separation of Church and State. That in itself is unConstitutional and totally contemptible. And another sleazy tactic because at the same time they attempt to portray Obama as a radical Muslim. This is SCARY and disgusting as hell. This is Caribou Barbie in action. They get their fixers in for a crash course but she is still this ignorant backwoods imbecile that they want to foist on America and the world in order to drill in Alaska. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QG1vPYbRB7k

Frank PS: “She and McCain made themselves fair game at the convention by all the name calling attacks they engaged in. So If Caribou Barbie can’t stand the hot water maybe she needs to get the hell out!.” Exactly x 10000%. I am hoping she’ll be indicted. Like Bush she doesn’t believe in laws for herself and is trying to ditch the investigation.

Wee said Suzanne—I’m a Kennedy Democrat—have been one for decades—and you are totally correct—the part of Eisenhower is no more—its been hijacked by the Christian ultra right Nazis who wish to rule this country by a repressive religion not seen since the Salem witch trials and the Spanish Inquisition—Joe McCarthy and his ilk must be applauding like crazy—

Frank- The UK Indepedant had a good article last weekend about the US Culture war between the backwoods, rural “red-states” [as a mindset more than a geographical location] and the educated ‘blue’ urban areas that economically support the nation. We make the money, we pay the most to support the government, and the Christian Nazi McCarthism Gun Nuts from the Alaskan outback are the ones who help decide policy by supporting the GOP against their own interest. The GOP as a tactic understood it couldn’t win without bringing the religious wackos into their tent would help them. It’s a sham in service to the oil companies and multinationals with the Ditto Heads clamoring to help rich people line their pockets at a cost to their own schools, infrastructure, jobs, etc. Bobby-Jo with his ‘57 faded-red pick-up, with the gun rack, confederate flag, bloodhounds and Jerry Falwell/Rush blasting on the radio with their racist/zenophobic/misogynistic spiell—can’t put gas in his car and eat too, but by gum-it…he’s a “God-fearin’ ‘publican jest like maw daddy and his daddy.” Bobby-Jo supports oil barons in their private clubs with their helicoptors and Lear Jets and multi-million dollar mansions around the globe. Like McCain, with his $300K annual tab just for the help. But because they put on a lapel flag pin and read off a Macivellian script the DittoHeads fall in line and vote. Just like in the Dark Ages. Creationism and God talk has always made those who can’t think for themselves, who can’t connect the dots between speech, actions and results in their own lives…the enslaved tools of the richest 2%. They think the GOP politicans care for them…they are laughing all the way to the back. And if their limo accidently mows down one of their constituents as they beat it out of town. Gosh, that is sad. Where’s my free lunch?

Read the article, Suzanne, and what you’ve just said is exactly who Caribou Barbie Doll cultivates. The polarization of this country is so utterly pronounced I don’t feel we as a nation are ever going to get back together. And it’s ripping thind country apart—just remember what Upton Sinclair wrote a century agp: Fascism will come to this country of ours carrying the bible and the cross. Well, Upton, you were right.

Upton Sinclair wrote a century agp: Fascism will come to this country of ours carrying the bible and the cross. Well, Upton, you were right.” that is what has created every Dark Age….that is what our Founding Fathers fled. That is what Bush-McCain-Palin work to recreate because it benefits the money elite and turns the rest of the nation into this: http://blogs.zdnet.com/open-source/images/great_depression_photograph.gi… http://www.thepatrioticgentleman.com/TheGreatDepression/images/Migrant%2… http://www.nansemondriverworks.com/lesley/gd43_shack.gif Vote GOP! Help McCain-Palin steal what Bush-Cheney missed! The $100M a year+ salaried oil barons and CEO that sent your jobs overseas, cut your benefits and stole your pensions want 4-more! Vote for greater misery! Aren’t you suffering enough? Aren’t you scraping by enough? Common, don’t you want to wreck our schools more? Have more wars? See gas, food and medical prices get even higher? Sure you do! Vote McBush-Palin!

Frank, Palin never presented that list. It’s an Internet hoax. Such a list does exist in Conservative circles, but Palin never gave it to the librarian.

Yes Carol Agyness told my the same—but I’ll geive you odds some of those books were on that list of hers—people like her almost always use the same list—when i taught—the school librarian would get similar lists for the conservatives in the neighbourhood—
