Whoopi Goldberg Reaches Out to Readers

Whoopi Goldberg

I’ve been reading — and it’s taken me a long time to figure out how to work this doggone computer,  I’m not very good at it — the various comments that have been made on the wOw site especially to things that I’ve said I believe. One of the greatest things I want to tell you is I appreciate everybody’s support. Some things that I read, though, kind of distressed me — like a response to something that I had written by Joanne Selle and Marjorie C., talking really about the black issue — the fact that I brought up race when talking about Sarah Palin’s daughter.

I said I thought if it had been one of Barack Obama’s daughters as opposed to a very nice young white lady it would have been a different response. Well people took to the fact that I made the differentiation by saying a white lady or a white girl and that made the discussion about race. Let me be really clear: You cannot tell me in this country — when you put a white girl next to a black girl and they’re both pregnant — that people are not going to say, “Well, she’s going to end up on welfare.” Or people are going to make those kinds of remarks that we’ve heard made, by the way, over the last 10 to 15 years; at least I have. And maybe it’s because my child got pregnant very early on that I have a distinctive feel about this. My daughter was talked about very differently than other people at the time, and maybe it’s because she was the child of a famous person. I don’t know. But to say that doesn’t come into play is ridiculous. To say that it is using the race card seems very strange to me. It’s an observation about a truism in the United States. They would have been treated differently. Would they have treated Chelsea Clinton the same way they’re treating Sarah Palin’s daughter? I don’t know. It hadn’t occurred to me until this moment that maybe they would have said the same thing about Chelsea Clinton, that she’s young and we have to stand beside her and it’s nobody’s business. Maybe they would have said that. I don’t think so, really, in my heart of hearts, but maybe they would have.

We are always going to disagree about certain things because that’s the nature of human beings. We don’t all think alike, we don’t all talk alike ...

Maybe you have to take a look, and my using a black and white description was not valid. I’ll take that. But I do take offense to Joanne and Marjorie talking about how black people want everything given to them, and how people of color are bitching about the fact that they didn’t get enough from Katrina and how when it happened in Iowa nobody like Oprah or anyone else did concerts for them. I do want to point out to you that I find it interesting you did not refer to the fires in California. Remember the fires in California? Where suddenly the government swooped right in there with money for different communities? Or other natural disasters that have happened — like Florida. You didn’t mention those where the government swooped in. I don’t think you’re accurate, Joanne, in saying that no one helped in Iowa. I don’t think that’s true at all. As a matter of fact, I know it’s not true.

I agree with you Anna…her refusal to look at even the POSSIBILITY of accepting someone else’s view point..but I chalk a lot of it up to her being young…just wait until she has more life experience..she does seem closed-minded now

Hey Whoopi, thanks for the reprimand. It was sorely needed. I think in a written forum people loosen the boundaries of respect a little too often and name calling begins. Were we all face to face name calling wouldn’t happen because, otherwise, fist fighting would erupt :^) As for the race card: I have no time or patience for any individual wishing to contradict MY Black life experience in America with rhetoric about looking for pity or a handout or any other treatment. I grew up a biracial child in the 60’s and 70’s when “Negroes” first became “Black”. My white mother’s parents were dead when she married, but my black father’s family DISOWNED him for marrying white. In many states of the US their marriage wasn’t legal and my father could have been lynched. I was beaten by white kids at school and black kids in my neighborhood. There were white men who wanted to date me because I was “exotic” (translation: white-skinned enough to allow them to forget that they were fulfilling a fantasy of having sex with a Black woman) and Black men who wouldn’t date me because I looked too much like a white girl (and I’d never “really” had the “sista” experience which might qualify me as a Nubian Queen). I had a co-worker once ask, upon overhearing about my biracial status, “Why would you choose to live as a Black person since you had the choice?” Through this, and much more, “I” only wanted to eat food, become educated, work, fall in love, become a mother, and pursue my own happiness. You know, my Constitutional Rights as they were finally granted me. As for speculation on any “beef” you might have with Elizabeth Hasselback? She is a woman with HER OWN American experience and an intelligent mind who has POLITICAL opinions that differ from mine, and many other Americans. But guess what? They MATCH the opinions of many others, too. People may seem to be in a battle when discussing differing opinions of a subject, but intelligence, civility and respect always keep control of the situation. And the fact that she tears up every now and again only shows that she is emotionally involved in her opinion on the subject at hand. It’s the viewing audience…you know, the folks that THINK they “know” you ladies as people rather than entertainers…who decide they are seeing a poor helpless Elizabeth being picked on by mean old Whoopi. I’ve GOT my grip on these subjects, that’s all I know!

Thank you Whoopi for speaking truth to power. I watched both conventions hoping for some discourse of how this country will address another natural disaster. Since the Republicans consider the southern states part of their base I was looking for some mention of Katrina. There will be many memorials this week for that other disaster, how about an acknowledgement of the following: Deaths by state: Alabama 2 Florida 14 Georgia 2 Kentucky 1 Louisiana 1,577* Mississippi 238 Ohio 2 Total 1,836 Missing 705 My heart goes to the 705 missing…where is their flag? What were they doing different that I do each and everyday? Where is their justice?

Whoopi—I agree that name-calling is rarely productive. But sometimes a name is a good shortcut, it encapsulates a lot of information in a few words. I think calling Palin “Barbie” does that. It may be derogatory, but it gets across a constellation of inferred information, much as is contained in calling McCain “A War Hero”. Unfortunately most people don’t take the time to look at and evaluate the issues, and they vote based on things like family tradition (what party their family always has been), personality, and the effectiveness of the advertising package put out there (think Mad Men on steroids). So to me, its okay, although I am totally with you that calling her a B**** is not. BTW I heard the RNC convention delegates were 93% white. I don’t have a similar statistic for the DNC.

Willow—I agree the name “Caribu Barbie” does not cross the line, though Whoopi does have a point. I think Whoopi’s point is that this type of name calling is not very civil, although she stops at comparing it to referring to Gov. Palin by the “B__” word, which is clearly unacceptable. Also, on a website, I think that civil address is more important in addressing fellow readers/posters, rather than discussing public figures, such as Gov. Palin. Frankly, from everything that I have seen and heard about Palin, I think that the name Caribou Barbie sounds pretty tame and should be the least of her concerns!

Whoopi, I totally agree with you, I know because I hear that kind of talk from some family and friends. It makes me furious. I am a white, independent woman, I find Obama-Biden ticket very encouraging! I think they will really work to change things, McCain-Palin, I’m afraid will be more of the same. I’m sure Palin is a fine woman, but I just can’t get past her very conservative views on womens issues. I voted for George Bush twice, but was so disappointed with him —I’m paying very close attention to this election. As far as Elizabeth Haselbeck goes, I believe she has a right to her opinion, she just doesn’t seem capable of talking in an adult manner to express her points. She either cries or talks over everyone, I don’t find this appealing for her cause. It seems as though everyone else has to contain themselves so Elizabeth can rant. I believe you all should be able to express yourselves in a lively discussion without worry about getting Elizabeth upset. She certainly doesn’t worry about other peoples feelings. I thought it was wrong from a professional sense, what she said about Michele Obama having something to hide on the show. I wouldn’t think this would be ethical for someone on the show to do that. I really resented it.

Donna…. Well said about Elizabeth! I too, really resented it…and I noticed today when they did a summary of her visit to the Convention it was conveniently left out….

Donna, I didn’t see The View. What did Elizabeth say, specifically? Did anyone contradict her? Thanks.

Dabney, Here’s a video of Elisabeth’s comments about Michelle Obama: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qoxkQUHZrTg

Anna, thanks for the link. Boy, that makes me mad. If she (EH) is going to throw stuff out there like that she should be suspended from the show. I would think that sort of thing would be confidential. For her to say that Michelle had a list of topics that they were not to talk about when she was on The View leaves too much to speculation. I am angry.

Thank you, Beth. You are always so kind and I appreciate it. I’ve been reading the posts and delighting in them. Such women!!! Smart, articulate, and strong opinions. I love this site and I love Whoopi. She can really get it going, can’t she? My hero!

Hope all is well, Dab-a-doo. Raining hard in Michigan. Obama and McCain are flying in and out of this state like mosquitoes now…3 trips for Obama since the DNC, 2 for McCain…and counting.

Hi James. A little rain here but mostly hot & humid. Obama and McCain aren’t paying much attention to Tennessee. They know Tenn. is a red state and no use wasting time here.

Dabny, It wasn’t an open discussion. It was about a 7 min video she made at the Republican convention. Her interviewing Cindy McCain, other Republicans. It was pure and simple a Republican commerical and didn’t cost them a dime. I’m waiting for them to let Whoopie and Joy make a Democratic video…….it won’t ever happen.
