Whoopi Goldberg Reaches Out to Readers

Whoopi Goldberg

I’ve been reading — and it’s taken me a long time to figure out how to work this doggone computer,  I’m not very good at it — the various comments that have been made on the wOw site especially to things that I’ve said I believe. One of the greatest things I want to tell you is I appreciate everybody’s support. Some things that I read, though, kind of distressed me — like a response to something that I had written by Joanne Selle and Marjorie C., talking really about the black issue — the fact that I brought up race when talking about Sarah Palin’s daughter.

I said I thought if it had been one of Barack Obama’s daughters as opposed to a very nice young white lady it would have been a different response. Well people took to the fact that I made the differentiation by saying a white lady or a white girl and that made the discussion about race. Let me be really clear: You cannot tell me in this country — when you put a white girl next to a black girl and they’re both pregnant — that people are not going to say, “Well, she’s going to end up on welfare.” Or people are going to make those kinds of remarks that we’ve heard made, by the way, over the last 10 to 15 years; at least I have. And maybe it’s because my child got pregnant very early on that I have a distinctive feel about this. My daughter was talked about very differently than other people at the time, and maybe it’s because she was the child of a famous person. I don’t know. But to say that doesn’t come into play is ridiculous. To say that it is using the race card seems very strange to me. It’s an observation about a truism in the United States. They would have been treated differently. Would they have treated Chelsea Clinton the same way they’re treating Sarah Palin’s daughter? I don’t know. It hadn’t occurred to me until this moment that maybe they would have said the same thing about Chelsea Clinton, that she’s young and we have to stand beside her and it’s nobody’s business. Maybe they would have said that. I don’t think so, really, in my heart of hearts, but maybe they would have.

We are always going to disagree about certain things because that’s the nature of human beings. We don’t all think alike, we don’t all talk alike ...

Maybe you have to take a look, and my using a black and white description was not valid. I’ll take that. But I do take offense to Joanne and Marjorie talking about how black people want everything given to them, and how people of color are bitching about the fact that they didn’t get enough from Katrina and how when it happened in Iowa nobody like Oprah or anyone else did concerts for them. I do want to point out to you that I find it interesting you did not refer to the fires in California. Remember the fires in California? Where suddenly the government swooped right in there with money for different communities? Or other natural disasters that have happened — like Florida. You didn’t mention those where the government swooped in. I don’t think you’re accurate, Joanne, in saying that no one helped in Iowa. I don’t think that’s true at all. As a matter of fact, I know it’s not true.

I’m with you Donna. I have no problem watching/listening to many conservative commentators, David Brooks, Monica Crowley, even Pat Buchanan is okay, although he can make me roll my eyes at times. Its Elisabeth’s demeanor that is hard to take, not her opinions.

Well said, Donna! The whole premise of The View was for women from different backgrounds and experiences to come together and share their views on various subjects. However, now the show has been reduced to Elisabeth Hasselbeck’s View, with the other co-hosts having to sit by and let her regurgitate Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh talking points! They’re not even her own opinions!

Elizabeth Hazelbeck is a bully, short and simple. She talks over everybody and has little if anything to say. I really can’t believe Rosie O’Donnell and Kathy Griffin have been bounced from the show and this twit is still there. (Sorry, Ms. Whoops, but she is a twit.) Without Ms. Whoops, The View wouldn’t be worth watching.

Donna, Did you watch the View when Rosie was on. They blamed Rosie for all the disagreements……..in fact made it so miseralbe that Rosie quit. It Was the spoiled brat Elisabeth who always started the fights………..she just didn’t back down. Everyone else lets Elisabeth get away with her bratty behavior. I wish they’d fire her and get someone intelligent and interesting.

Whoopi, I was very upset today when The View allowed Elisabeth to “show off” her display of partisanship at the Republican convention….not because she didn’t have a right to be there, but because of the things she said about Mrs. Obama (name not said, but certainly implied) at the dinner for Cindy McCain. It was very disrespectful and unethical of her to “out” (not sure if her comments were even true) Mrs. Obama in a national audience in such a way and Barbara Walters, as a producer, should at least address the issue on The View. I wasn’t going to watch today, because I am so upset about her comments, but I wanted to see if it was, at the very least, addressed in some way….it was not. I am a little upset with you, Whoopi, because it seems as though you are “selling out” your principles and beliefs for a TV show. Is the money and fame that important to you? While Rosie may have been controversial, she was at least brave enough to put her point out there and take the consequences; you seem to have resigned yourself to a backseat to Ms. conservative Elisabeth. I will not be watching the day John McCain and his wife are on…not because I do not want to hear what they have to say (I know what that will be), but because of the disrespect that was shown to Mrs. Obama. No, I’m not African-American; I am an older white grandmother who is tired of letting the right wing take over the airwaves while claiming the media is biased to the left…what a joke! Thanks for listening.

Thanks Anam. I had another thought after I wrote my comment. Maybe Elisabeth knew that it would most likely “close the door” on the Obama’s being willing to appear on The View again….that would certainly give Senator McCain the last word….just what Elisabeth and her “mouthpieces” would like to see happen. C’mon, Whoopi, please tell us an apology and an open invitation will be issued to the Obamas!

Hi Brenda. Thanks for voicing your opinion. I’m sure Whoopi can take care of herself, but I’m replying to your mild scolding of her regarding “selling out”. Haven’t you ever been in a conversation at work where your true opinion was withheld in a effort to keep the peace? Haven’t you ever had a disagreeable co-worker and ignored any argument in order to ignore the possible disruption of your work place? It is not always wise to speak your mind completely and without reserve. Especially in your work place. Slinging barbs about “fame & money meaning more” is unfair. “The View” is Whoopi’s JOB. She obviously respects that more than she worries about defending her opinions against Elizabeth in a confrontational attempt which will fail at changing another’s viewpoint. Elizabeth is as happy to defend her “right wing” stance as I am my “left”. It is her inalienable right. I was very uncomfortable witnessing the big, final throwdown between Rosie and Elizabeth. I learned that day that even a dedicated, articulate, well-regarded professional can be goaded into showing her ass in public. I’m impressed by the women of “The View”, that they ALL can have differing opinions and not sling mud in order to vindicate voicing them. And Whoopi has my greatest respect out of the bunch. Throughout her career I’ve heard her criticized about personal and professional decisions and statements and she still has the independence today that she began with. I haven’t seen her “sell out” once.

I understand your point of view, but my criticism to Whoopi was letting the statements implied about Michelle Obama go unanswered by a respected member of the panel. I too respect Whoopi’s point of view, and that is why in this case, I hoped for more. The fact that they didn’t even show the part of the “clip” where she made the statement showed that they were basically “giving her a pass”, as they seem to always do….and, in my opinion, that was the “selling out” point. Keeping the peace is not the same as an open discussion…it just seemed too “staged” to me. I will gladly “backtrack” if it is addressed or, at the very least, some type of apology is issued to the Obamas, but I will not change my opinion of what transpired on The View on Monday. We can agree to disagree on this, but then that is what this “open discussion” is all about.

And that it is, Brenda. Thanks for getting back to me on this. Talk to you next time :^)

Hi Brenda — I totally agree that it was unnecessary for The View to give the GOP convention a 5th day of TV coverage via the show today, but I thought perhaps they did a comparable show for the Dem convention. If not, it was appalling. I urge you to let The View know your feelings: no doubt the show has a website, and possibly Barbara Walters has her own. I urge you and any others who are upset about today’s show, and/or EH’s handling of the Michelle Obama issue, to contact The View and/or Barbara Walters and express your views. And Go Cubs!

Thanks, Linda….I have contacted both The View and ABC, but today I had my annual checkup and my blood pressure was up! Maybe it’s time to give up The View to save myself the anxiety and frustration. Coming to this forum has been a great outlet for me…it provides support and gives me an outlet for my opinions! It provides (in most cases) an intelligent discussion of the issues that are important to women and our families. My sister and I were just saying the other day that it would be nice to have an intellectual discussion about politics and not just the “grunts” we usually get from our husbands….don’t get me wrong, we love them to pieces, but open discussions about politics or “women’s” issues are not their forte!

I agree with everything you wrote, Whoopi, I am excited about the coming election. You know, Whoopi, my mother taught me never to call anyone names other than their given name. Well, I hope she can’t hear me wherever she is , the last 8 years I have learned a lot of new names . Bush made me do it. I thought that at 76 I could start saying what I feel Now you come along and just like my mother you tell me I can’t call her a “Barbie”. Cheap shot you said. Darn it all , you are taking all the fun out of my frustrations.
