Whoopi Goldberg: We Have Finally Become Part of the Fabric of the United States of America

Whoopi Goldberg

A moment about history.

Tonight as I watched the numbers come in, I was cautiously optimistic that there would be a big change — but I wasn’t fully convinced. And then I called my mom, and the numbers kept changing and moving forward, and I said to her, “Ma, did you ever in your life think you would see this day?” And she said emphatically, “No. I never thought I’d live to see this day.” And it surprised me because my mom is the most optimistic person that I know and it never occurred to me that this was something she was hoping for. Not just because it was a black candidate, but because it meant that anything was again possible in the United States of America.

I’m being black about his, I’m celebrating in my heart and I have screamed out of my window. I realized that for probably the first time in my life, in thinking about myself as an American, it occurred to me that this is really our arrival in the country that said everything was possible. We have finally become part of the fabric of the United States of America. This is just strictly speaking as a black person. It would be very difficult not to talk about the thrill of that part of it because 160 years have gone by and we have finally come to the place where we are ready for leaders and ready to look at leaders as men and women and perhaps not by their color. But it is the first time it has happened so folks should not be surprised that black folks are really, really happy about this.

On John McCain — whose speech was so beautiful, so brilliant, and so heartfelt, and so American. I wish that he had been that person throughout this campaign because that’s the John McCain that I respect and have always respected and had great joy about. I was thrilled at the way he handled himself but moreover how he handled the crowd who began to boo, and he said, “No, that’s not what it is. Tomorrow I wake up and I am in the service of my country.” It is an amazing and beautiful concession speech. Something we have not heard for such a long time.

The negativity that surrounded this campaign was extraordinary. But I do believe that somehow this young man, Barack Obama, is going to reach his arms out to the nation and embrace us as one, as the United States of America, the truly beautiful gem in the world, the great nation that we are. And he, I think, for now at least in this moment, has made us a better country, has made us a better people. And somehow the youth of America got it. And they dropped all their peripheral stuff that we always kvetch about them doing. They dropped all the BS and got out there and made their voices heard. And people now recognize that the youth of America is a force to be reckoned with. And when you look at these shining faces that look up and look at each other as not black or white or any of these things but as Americans, it is a sigh of a relief that I can’t remember having in such a long time. Whether you are a republican or a democrat or an independent tonight, I don’t think there was anyone in the country who didn’t realize that something magnificent happened. God bless us all, God bless America, the America that can be.

Jennifer, I like Sherry, too, she’s a doll and felt sorry for her crying (the vid was on HuffPo). Wish I’d been at Gladstones for Fish in Malibu this evening. Instead (there are no real restaurants in Shell Beach where am visting) we went to Pismo Beach…no real restaurants there either, but everyone in the restaurant was talking about the election in happy, excited tones…could hear it all the time we were there…people seemed elated.

Wine Warrior, Their is a good really old Steak House somewhere close by. I use to go clamming in Pismo! memories… It is so great to know that the shameful practices of the GOP, did not steel away the peoples election! I am so pleased to have found the many Bright and forward thinking people here on WoW. I am l earning to ignore those that seem to be rooted in the Dark and wear robes of IGNORANCE. Hopefully the Changes that will slowly take place over he next 8 yrs, will allow them to disrobe and put on a new bright and knowledgeable skin.

Whoopi, I am happy that you are happy because I have always been a big fan of yours. And believe me when I say I hope the new president is successful! May I ask just one question? Everybody keeps saying “God bless America!” WHICH GOD ARE YOU ALL TALKING ABOUT? In my humble opinion, (and that of MANY others,) which GOD you worship is more important than which MAN is in the White House. And I am not implying Obama claims to be anything but a Christian….but if you are “All inclusive”….how can you say “God bless America” unless you specify which God you are talking about?

quote:Yes we can … and yes we did. Let the healing begin. AMEN! whoopi…i honestly feel there are people of all colors as excited as black folks in america….many are tired of being ‘seen’ as biased because of others who are…i think ‘race’ is a non-issue to a great degree amongst young people- who are the future…. and it shows that barriers CAN be broken down…and that the concept of understanding, being INTERESTED in and CHERISHING diversity can overcome the fear that ignorance breeds and grows into hatered… i believe in two emotions- love and fear….america chose love yesterday and i for one and very excited and relieved …i feel hopeful for the first time in a VERY long time ..hopeful for healing the many, many wounds of the last 8 years….

Congratulations Whoopi. Our democracy is working. Tues. NOv 4th ,was working at a poll, and my cell phone rang (no one is to have a phone but the judge) Inside the firehouse- garage I had no news of the state of the election. A call from Beijing, China from a jubilent daughter with yelling fans of democracy told me Pennsylvania just got “called” for Obama. My heart rose. Surrounded by half Republicans, half Democrats having worked 15 hours staying carefully non-partisan—————- We knew our national pride was back. We had protected our system and Obama had won! And you are to be congratulated for continuing to remain optimistic all these many years with Strength, pride and endurance….and Humor. Thank you.

As the big day drew closer and closer I held my breath and dared to dream. when the race was called I exhaled and then went outside in my suburban neighborhood in a repub state and chanted Obama, Obama, Obama, YES, YES, YES and it felt damn good and then I celebrated with my teenagers and my husband. I feel very hopeful. It is a good day to be an AMERICAN. I did think John McCain gave a very classy speech and seemed like the John McCain of old and that was also very nice to see.

No Ro…there are many so-called gods known by many different names, that many different people of this world believe in and worship. The Almighty Creator of the Universe…..whose name is (if you believe The Holy Bible that Christians believe in) is JEHOVAH, Jesus’ Heavenly Father. You care what name people call you, don’t you? Well……THE GRANDEST PERSONAGE IN THE UNIVERSE HAS A NAME AND WANTS PEOPLE TO USE IT WITH GREAT REVERENCE! His opinion is the only one that matters!

I’ve just finished reading all your comments you wonderful Wow women (with the exception of a couple)……….. I’m moved and enlightened by the love and dedication that seems to be pouring out of all your Souls………….. I was so moved last night it took me hours to stop the flow of tears that just kept coming. (I’m not a cryer). I’ve always hoped I would live to see the day this Country had a Woman President, (we almost made it) and also the First Black President. That these two possibilities transpired at the same time is pretty miraculous. To Have a man who is so Intelligent……..inspirational……….loving to his family and his Country is overwhelming me today. I feel so Proud……….. What a picture our New First Family makes. To have the World brought back to a place of respecting us is a Miracle in itself. My heart went out to Senator McCain last night……….he sounded like the Old McCain I had respected for so many years… I pray he will be willing to help US by helping our New President. I’m sure most of America today is not only feeling exhausted from Our emotional High of last night……….but such a feeling of hope for our future. We (and the rest of the World) are in dire straights right now. We as Americans and Citizens of the World need to do what we can to change and move forward with our help in what ever ways we each are capable. I remember all the sacrifices we made during the Second World War…….. We were strong and Patriotic………..We can and will be again. I also say………..God Bless America……… Not a particular God…………..Just the Powerful God of all humanity. Rest Ladies…………it will be interesting to see what our Founders are going to do to intice us in the next few weeks. Whoopie………….I love you…………I love that you shared so much of your inner feelings with us today on the View. You are a spectacular woman………….I enjoy you every day. My day starts with a cup of Tea and the View. After that Wowowow…………….

Those who choose to pick all past history apart today instead of relaxing for a few minutes and enjoying the ride are missing out! Thanks Maurine……..I enjoy your posts also.

Greetings from a Canadian friend. I am just old enough (51) to vividly remember Martin Luther King, and to have observed and learned from the ongoing and often heartbreaking struggle in America for civil rights that has played out during my lifetime - up to and including this defining and dazzling moment in history. It had an enormous impact on me as a young child, and helped me to determine the kind of person I wanted to be in the world. Canada has its own shameful track record of political, economic and social persecution of visible minorities and other disenfranchised groups - including persons of colour, gays and lesbians, women, the mentally ill, etc. However, prejudice in my country is more like a fist hidden in a velvet glove. Canadians are very fond of seeing ourselves as “good guys” - and can be pretty damned smug about it too. We have our good points, but we also have our flaws. I think that because prejudice is not necessarily so obvious here, it’s also not as forcefully challenged. Growing up as your neighbour, and as an observer of the open racial strife in the US, my eyes were absolutely opened to what I could have easily remained ignorant about in my own country. Last night, as I watched President-Elect Obama’s acceptance speech, I suddenly realised that I must have been holding my breath through this campaign. The same thought went through my mind as the one expressed by Whoopi Goldberg today. I was stunned to discover that in my heart of hearts I didn’t expect to live to see this day. I know I hoped for the best, but must have expected it would take longer to see a black American scale such heights. How wonderful it is to be so wrong. How inspiring to know that just as terrible events can change the world in a heartbeat, so too can something like this. How beautiful it was to see the tremendous hope, joy, relief and inspiration in the faces of all those watching Barack Obama last night. I truly hope this new promise proves to be contagious around the world. Both presidential candidates are highly skilled men of integrity, insight and compassion, but for these times and for many reasons, I believe Barack Obama’s selection was the right choice. His personal qualities qualify him for the job. And - it is entirely appropriate to also celebrate the monumental event that this is for Black Americans. I wept tears of joy with them last night. November 4, 2008 was a day of hope and grace for Americans of colour, for America of all kinds, and for all kinds of people all over the world.
