Why Candice Bergen Is 'Very Anxious,' 'Agitated' About the Election

Candice Bergen
I will probably watch the election at home with my brother and friend Bee. My husband will be in NYC at an intimate and fascinating dinner with politically sophisticated and connected people but I, unfortunately, will be in L.A. finishing "Boston Legal." I am, like all of us, very anxious and agitated about this election and not as optimistic as some.

Hey, Swede, it’s our nature to worry. Something about those long winters and cold nights. But really, it’s going to be okay. I wouldn’t lie to you.

I’ve never watched “Boston Legal”, but you don’t make it sound like much fun, Candy. Is it grueling work?

Hey James, you’re not up to snuff here — Boston Legal is actually one of the best shows on television right now. And Our Dear Swede is the bright light of the thing.

I know, Mugs. I haven’t watched anything other than news, sports, documentaries and an occasional movie in years. Is that the one with William Shatner in it? My night usually goes like this: watch some CNN, maybe flip-flop over to C-SPAN or MSNBC, and, if the Detroit Red Wings, Pistons or Tigers are on, watch that, picture-in-picture. I wonder if it was the quarter-century of news I did that made me this way? When I was a kid, I watched so much TV it was unreal. The sitcoms - Here’s Lucy, Beverly Hillbillies, Jeffersons, All in the Family, Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley, That Girl, Brady Bunch, Partridge Family, Love American Style, etc. etc. And the game shows: 3 on a Match, Joker’s Wild, High Rollers, Concentration (my fave), Hollywood Squares, What’s My Line, Truth or Consequences, Let’s Make a Deal, etc. etc. Somewhere along the line, my interests in TV got very limited. But, since the late 1960’s, when I was very little, I’ve always had a passion for: The Detroit Red Wings (hockey), Detroit Lions (football), Detroit Tigers (baseball), Detroit Pistons (basketball), Michigan Wolverines (college football/basketball) and, to a lesser extent, Michigan State.

I’m so sorry you didn’t get to go with your sweet fella to NYC, Candace. Daggone! And I’m sorry I misspelled your name again last time and I don’t really envy you at all except for everything I admire. Work is work, no matter how you slice it. You oughta call him when Indiana comes in. That state’s gonna tell the tale. More than ever, I’m predicting a landslide victory for the Democratic presidential ticket. I can only hope the Republicans who remain in Congress will respond rationally to this challenge, work hard, initiate reform, and begin to earn their keep.

EKA -
Candace, speaking of Boston Legal, last night was classic, the political argument between Alan Shore and Denny Crane that wound up in a paint ball fight was hilarious ! Boston Legal is the only network show that I don’t miss, continually well written and always entertaining !!

EKA Sayers : I agree with you wholeheartedly!! I can’t even remember the last time I laughed as hard as I did when I saw the paintball fight!! Waay too funny! ;-) Love the show enormously.

Yes, EKA, but not enough of Shirley Schmitt. The episode about the former G.I. wanting to sue the Army hospital/doctor for the death of his brother began splendidly. I wanted Shirley to deliver the summation, with Alan and Denny in Time-Out. Candice Bergin, you give that show so much class. Thank you. Peace and grace

Well, we all miss Murphy Brown, don’t we. I keep wondering why they have all those guys on her show.

A whole bunch of actors from “Murphy” have already been on “Boston”… Haven’t seen Faith Ford or Charles Kimbrough (spelling last name?) yet… Perhaps just a matter of time. Again - why won’t “they” release the rest of Murphy Brown on Dvd*s when they release second and third rate series??? Shameful. Watching Murphy on Youtube isn’t the same, and besides - a lot of episodes have been edited down. I know that because I have several episodes recorded on VHS, very well used vhs’s!!! I need dvd’s…..desperately… My tapes are soon worn out.

I wish I could have been in Chicago last night — that really looks like THE place to have been!! Let’s hope the next 4-to-8 years are better than the last…
