Why Candice Bergen Wants to Know if They Serve Turkey in Ethiopia

Candice Bergen

On Thanksgiving, my husband and I will be in Addis Ababa, in Ethiopia, with my daughter who is there for a year volunteering. We will be taking the American doctor she works for and his 17 kids and interns to a restaurant that serves a Thanksgiving dinner. What that could be, I don’t want to think but it could be a goat … or a camel?

Someone at the “Y” the other day was saying because there are so many wild turkeys in Oakland, it had been proposed that hey be given to the “poor” for their Thanksgiving dinner. I asked, “But isn’t that cannibalism?” All best to everyone for a special day of gratitude. MP

Candice ,a blessed day to you and yours. I can’t get the picture out of my mind with you and that gang in Addis Ababa, what an adventure.

Candice, Perhaps they will serve you a good “doro wat” — a chicken stew — along with some “injera”! If my memory serves me well, I remember your coming to Addis Ababa in the mid-70’s, when I was living there with my family. There was a reception held in your honor and, I believe, a photographer who accompanied you that my parents attended. For some reason, I believe I was invited as well, but for the life of me, I cannot remember why I did not go. I wonder whether you have you been back to Ethiopia since then. I hope you have a wonderful and memorable trip, and that your daughter’s work is making a difference in that beautiful and tragic country.

Wow - what an amazing experience. I imagine it would have been wonderful to catch up with your daughter and it would have given Thanksgiving greater significance for the year.
