Why Does Geraldine Ferraro Keep Hammering Away at Barack Obama's Skin Color?

Joan Ganz Cooney

Is anyone other than me wondering what prompts Geraldine Ferraro to keep hammering away at Barack Obama’s skin color?

The general reaction was negative enough when she first stated that Obama’s race was the only thing that made him a competitive candidate for the presidency. But she just keeps it up as if we didn’t hear it the first time. I would happily vote for Hillary if she becomes the Democratic candidate, but one could answer Geraldine that Hillary wouldn’t be a candidate for president if she hadn’t been a president’s wife.

The fact that Barack’s father was a Kenyan and his mother a white woman from Kansas is part of his biography, and important part of who he is. What are we supposed to answer to her charge? Should it be "Thanks, Geraldine. I’ll vote for McCain if Obama wins the nomination?” I cannot understand why she persists in this line of criticism; but, perhaps someone who reads this will have a comment that will enlighten me.

I’m mystified about Geraldine’s fixation on Obama’s skin color, too, especially as she touts herself as a civil rights proponent who has done much to assist the African American community. The kindest explanation I can think of is that she’s not well, mentally, and that her problems have influenced her good judgment. Otherwise, she’s just a bitter aging woman who still resents her own political failures and wants to be heard shouting. She’s certainly no help to Hillary’s campaign.

I have to feel for Ferraro being referenced in Obama’s speech (an historical speech that will be read for many generations) and Ferraro is compared by a little more than juxtaposition to Rev. Wright for racism. Geraldine is not a racist and I don’t blame her one bit for how she has been race baited by her objective statement. Everyone is on the band wagon to have a discussion about race, then beats her up for discussing it. Nothing racist in her comment. So many are eager to hear the resentment the blacks harbor, yet the reverse is taboo. Gerladine did also contend that she would not have been the VP candidate had she not been a woman. Let’s give her a break, respect her for her pioneering efforts in equality and feel for the black eye given to her by Obama’s speech that will give a laser beam exposure on Geraldine through the generation than anything else she stood for. Obama’s speech ruined Ferraro’s legacy without being fair enough to include exactly what she said so the generations to come can see if her comments really do compare to Rev. Wrights “GD America”. I feel for her, I truly do.

It’s because if he were white, the liberals would be saying, “We are being suicidal to nominate someone who is ranked as the most liberal member of the senate, to the left of 80% of Americans. His record is anemic, he’s a bumbler when he’s off message, and the general public is repulsed by his anti-American political geneaology. This is McGovern all over again. We’re doomed if he beats Hillary.” But the Obama fans say: “Oh, he’s so inspiring, and so handsome, and makes me feel so good, and promises me everything I’ve always wanted.” It’s a seduction, not a campaign. She bring up the skin color because it has kept him viable as a candidate in liberal circles. She’s trying to get people to “snap out of it” and recognize his political immaturity and lack of executive experience. It reminds me of something I read about a architectural landscape design firm. They found that when they put a water feature in any design proposal, ie. pond, waterfall, pool - that was the design chosen by client, even if the other designs worked better for the rest of property. It got to the point, that, when working with a client, they would take out the water feature so that the client could more rationally examine and analyze the strengths and benefits of each design - then add the water feature back into the final design. Geraldine is simply trying to alert the public to the irrational over-focus on Obama’s main “design feature” that is distracting people from the rest of the landscape. I see prickly pear cactus and some plant-choking ivy that I’m not to happy about.

I agree with you Bella Mia! The enthusiasm of the “MTV” voters (who are not yet responsible for their own support and rely on looks over substance) coming out in droves is swaying DNC to rig it so Obama wins (by throwing our Michigan & Florida voters who went for Hillary) I am concerned that these young voters - whose main reasons for supporting Obama is based on “no more baby boomers” and “change”- don’t understand the complexity of the many crisis this country is facing. I have a 22 & 21 year old and love them dearly- but I support them, pay the mortgage, have my industry’s jobs shipped overseas, have to pay their rising tuition costs, my retirement fund is in the dumper, my home equity has evaporated, my corporation provides no retirement health coverage (though I pay extra to have my kids covered now) and corp. pensions are also a thing of the past, social security will most likely be chiseled away or gone when I retire and Obama wants to raise capital gains taxes from 15% to 25%. I prefer supporting people of real talent - not looks or a “rock star” president Obama girl wiggles around for on YouTube.

Obama just doesn’t do it for me. He seems like a snooty HS debater to me. Show pony. Then they started this racial thing—he was attracted to a church whose minister was more of my era, with the black power, bitterness trip. Certainly, African-Americans have plenty to be bitter about, but now I am worried so-called “black” issues will come to the fore. African-Americans are 12% of the population—health care affects all, the war affects all, the economy, all…all, all. Yet, Obama doesn’t really act like a black standard-bearer, either. He doesn’t talk about affirmative action or reparations or anything. So then I get back to the snootiness, the pointy finger coming at me…Ack! I guess it’s not fashionable to say any of these things. But they are on my mind. Maybe Ferarro is equally conflicted.

Bravo!!! I couldn’t have said it better myself, Bella Mia. And I am a Democrat through & through. We wouldn’t even be talking about Senator Obama as a possible presidential candidate if he weren’t an African American.

Bella Mia, I agree that Ferraro was pointing out the obvious. With the slimmest of resumes this very inexperienced man who can speak brilliantly on the stump certainly stammers hestantly when in smaller groups, and avoids the press in direct confrontation as much as possible. He even had the stones to tell the press”I’ve answered 8 questions, goodbye”. It was a hot subject, and he couldn’t read a speech. Any white man woulud be analyzed minutely regarding such few accomplishments; his bio would be scrutinized, and his baggage in the swampland of Chicago Daley politics would likewise be carefully vetted and considered. Any white man with Reverend Wright’s equal in a controversial separatist white church would also not be nominated. I have known Geraldine and she is not a racist. Her point was attacked as racist by Obama, but they have been crying racist at any criticical examination or challeng to his positions, avoidances, etc. We can expect to see more accusations and misinterpretations in the future, Being black has been Obama’s strongest asset.

Why Does Geraldine Ferraro Keep Hammering Away at Barack Obama’s Skin Color? The more interesting question is why does Barack Obama keep hammering away at Barack Obama’s skin color? On the front page of the New York Times Obama said that when he was a young man he was in NYC and would watch white dog owners bring their dogs to black neighborhoods to defecate. I lived in NYC during this time period. I had a dog. I talked to hundreds of dog owners. I never met one who wanted to make a political statement with their dog. Most of them wanted to get out of the horizontal rain and get to work. But now that Obama has alerted me to this white black problem with neighborhoods and dogs, I will be looking for white and / or black people walking through white and / or black neighborhoods doing bad things with their dogs. So much for transcendence.

AB - this comment from Obama is as bad as his “typical white person” comment. Too many times his prejudice comes through. I think he could do a lot of good for black people but I certainly do not seem him ever getting beyond race to represent all people he would preside over if he were elected president. The black community has serious problems - in my city only 29% graduate from high school. Obama was giving a speech to telling them to feed their kids breakfast, make sure they do their homework, and get them to bed on time. Help is needed, but this is not the role our president should focus on when we have so many looming catastraphes. I do recognize as jobs are lost and kids drop out of school in such high numbers, crime will be off the scales. My city has 4000 less cops and firefighters than it did a few years ago in lieu of cutting after school programs. Well those kids are not in school to go to after school programs. My city’s Chief of Police talked about 13 year olds having babies and kids show up at school at lunch time to get the food and bring it home for their siblings. This Chief of Police said these kids are not even accepted by the military because they have no high school degree and also have drugs in their systems. This is a problem but not the main one or the newest one and we need a more diverse uniifying president. I find Obama’s tactics to be very destructive and divisive.

Why does the Obama campaign only show pictures of him with his fathe and not with his mother? It’s a little cynical of them to portray this guy as a black man when in fact he’s half white.

Mugsy, I think he must have had some strained relationship with his MOm. He hardly ever talks about her except to say she was white. She left him in Hawaii to go back to Indonesia when he was still in school. And he was not at her side when she was dying from cancer. Obama’s half sister claims she is bi-racial but Obama says he is black. ???

Gotta play that race card, Mugsy. It got him where he is today. “If it’s only about ringing rhetoric, let speech writers run.” - Robin Morgan
