Why Joan Juliet Buck Admires Wise Young Ones

In response to: Whom do you envy?
Joan Juliet Buck
I envy people who knew who they were very young, so they didn’t spend their lives trying to please people who weren’t paying attention.

I’m so glad you said this! I’ve never really known who I am and to this very day wish I did know very early in my life so I could have enjoyed being ‘me’ all these years. Had those around me paid attention to me, and my strengths instead of my weaknesses and helped me build a wonderful life upon them, I wouldn’t be still wondering… Those who are born with obvious talents and loves are definitely the lucky ones in my book!

But I love stories about women who have found themselves late in life. Sometimes we’re not ready, there are other lessons to be learned.

I’ve often thought that the ones who “got it” early on either had: Really supportive parents (not helicopter moms) - or— Older siblings who were a good example —or— Been here before and somehow remembered some stuff (crazy, huh?)

My oldest grandson has known since he was very young, exactly what he was going to do with his life. At six, he started writing and creating scripts of characters he would create so someday he could be an animator, and create what he called films with morals. We had no clue, how this would happen. Just watched an incredible desire take hold. At eight taking him to Disneyworld, one of the animators was so impressed with his knowledge of animation he was given a 50 year medalion which was only given to Disney animators.

In the years since, the local school district implemented a line of courses for e-communications, where he will learn animation, broadcasting and all forms of the trade in the districts own tv station. We have always called him a voice of the future. Yesterday he came home, and told us he was asked to give a speech at the ninth grade promotion next month, about how his life has evovled during the last three years. Putting his own spin on it, he is writing the speech as if he is 200 years in the future and relaying the information back to his ancestor, which is himself. At the very least it should be interesting.

His fourth grade teacher asked his mother to give him medication, he was not bad in the classroom, but if he spoke she lost the attention of the classroom. She thought maybe dulling his senses, would make it easier for her to have the full attention. I attended the meeting that was arranged in regard to her request and why. When it was over, Harper Valley PTA would have sounded like a gathering of angels, and she dropped the request.
