Liz Smith's Proposition for Mary Wells

Liz Smith

My Thelma would have been that great former Governor of Texas, Ann Richards. She was wise and funny and brave. She’d have been terrific driving the car.

P.S. Since Ann has gone to her reward I would like to suggest my new partnership enthusiasm. I would select the grand Mary Wells Lawrence
who, though she often tools around on her boat and in private jets, is said to be one hell of a good driver. Mary is brave, courageous, level headed, cautious and a first-rate companion. She was the first woman CEO on the Stock Exchange back in the days when that did not automatically mean you are a criminal. A woman who broke the glass ceiling for good is the woman I want at the wheel.

Today my louise is Toney. He (yes he) is the person in my life today who would give serious thought to getting in that car after we did the unthinkable. Today of course the unthinkable would be that we put Obama/Biden signs in our yards, wore tees for the campaign and secretly met in a dimly lit room speaking in code (about Toney’s right to marry Ron, my hopes that my daughter and two sons will live in an equitable work and social world) with the rest of the small group of Dems here near the woodlands texas. Sigh. I love Toney…he completes me. I have may Louises. I love them all, today Toney is my Louise.

Dear Liz, I appreciate your paean to Ms. Lawrence but dearly love your reference to Gov. Richards. I’ve been thinking a lot these days about her and about the unsinkable Molly Ivins. Over on the “what newspapers does she read” thread I spoke about Ann’s happy facility with folksiness. Nobody was fooled by that dazzling smile and the drawling colloquialisms..or the hairdo and blue eyeshadow.I adored her….I refuse to “correct” my accent and I don’t mind at all being perceived as dumb old Southern broad. It has served me in good stead all these years…It irritates fast talking purveyors of bs and I love it when they get sweetly zinged…. Off thread and I know it..sorry… I would have sold my soul for Sarah Palin to have mentioned Ann as mentor/governor/equal, etc….Then Biden could have said “I knew Ann Richards. Ann Richards was a friend of mine. You, Governor Palin, are no Ann Richards.” I applaud both your choices.

come on ladies, men are simply ‘mutated-women’—-or why do i have ‘vestigal-nipples’? i’d pick me—-heresy? nope—-just ‘fed-up’ and ready to ‘go-out’ in a blaze of glory—-drive that ‘muscle-car’ over the side, and ‘futz-this-world’—-so put a discarded Dolly Parton wig on me—-
