Why Marlo Thomas Calls Herself 'Old-Fashioned'

Marlo Thomas
I’m an old-fashioned girl. I like to curl up with a book, feel the texture of the pages, sense the weight of it in my hands. Kindles can’t hold a candle to books. It’s like the difference between spending time with a lover or an accountant.

Kindles? I had to look up Kindles - I am so not with the latest technology! I suppose it has its advantages although I find there is something luxurious about reading from pages of a book, smelling the aroma of the paper and the ink. What’s to smell from a gizmo you are holding in your hands except maybe the lunch aroma emanating from your hands from the hot dog with onions you ate? Also, it is not comfortable to read from a monitor what with eye strain.

Sometimes, the computer is fine. You can capture images and do so much with it. But, just like newspapers, it’s more comfortable to hold it in your hand. I would like to have a TV-sized screen so that I can multi-task, especially at work. Sometimes, I have Audobe Audition open with a wave file, and a newspaper page open, and I have one saved document minimized at the bottom of the screen, and a fresh Word Document upon which I’m typing a story. Very difficult to do all that toggling back and forth betwixt (I feel like Jed Clampett) windows. But I have no better option, and time can be of the essence. The Big Screen certainly proves its superiority in the film world. Film is perhaps better than digital, in its top state. I loved that final scene of a lighthouse on the Michigan shoreline in the Gran Torino movie, an awesome image that only a large screen could do justice to - and, incidentally, an unforgettable flick. I confess, I teared up at the end. That’s Michigan right there. I thought to myself, “Eastwood’s talent is other-worldly.”

I own a Kindle and still read some books that I had before. But the Kindle is so easy to hold, transport, download books, read a chapter without purchasing the book first and easy to use. My 12 year old son even downloads books and uses my Kindle.
