Why Professional Athletes Should Be Allowed to Compete in the Olympics

Whoopi Goldberg
What exactly is a professional athlete? Is it someone who does it for money, does this make him/her a pro? Is it someone who’s made money doing their sport? Or do they have to be an amateur? And what does that mean? I don’t understand why anyone who is good enough to compete in the Olympics shouldn’t be able to. If you made it through the trials, you’re good enough. And the only way to make it through the trials is to do it every day of your life but then are you a professional? Just because you’re making money being the best at a sport shouldn’t stop you from being in the Olympics showing the world you’re the best in your sport. I have a headache.

Aspirin is good for that, Ms. Whoops. It’s a definition thing. It started that way centuries ago. You know, the best that do it for love.

It seems that the Olympics are a whole lot more interesting today than they were decades ago, when only amateurs were allowed to compete. And the top athletes are most likely going to have received some sort of payment for what they do. But I was a little surprised to learn about the “incentive” pay some nations were giving for their athletes that bring home the gold. You can’t stop payment, so sit back and enjoy it. Less headache.

Whoopi - it sounds a little like the difference between a slut and a whore. If you do it because you love it you are a slut - if you take money for it you are a whore. Never made sense to me either!

After rereading this I thought I better try to explain it - If you are the best at something, whether you do it because of love or money, doesn’t really change the fact that you are the best. Don’t really know where the slut and whore came from - guess I am just in a nasty mood - lol.

Hey Whoopi, I think it has alot to do about with guts, some people are good at what they do but they do not want to go to the olympics, others only work to go there, some want to go to get fame and get no position wid it. Its just that the older athletes think that the younger ones should go and not them. Like my swimming coach, she went but she didnt get a medal and she has it in her head that because she was old she couldnt win. So she sends younger athletes. SHe says that younger athletes stand a better chance at winning than older ones and older athletes should give younger ones a chance. My opinion? Anyone shuld be able to go once ur coach and U know u are ready and u r the best, not necessarily a pro but someone who is willing to represent his or her country and do good. Being there for ur country is what matters the most, u dont have to win, because think of it this way, u DONT KNOW the other athletes around the world’s abilities compared to urs. great post whoopi love, felicia

Whoopi! You have a very fun personality. I am new to this forum and this is my first post. You are my fav! Concerning your post: Would it have something to do with the funding? The first thing that came to my mind is that individuals in the Olympics may be sponsored (nonprofit). Just a thought. My husband is a 3x world champion and 2x “Hall of Fame” inductee. He is a “professional” athlete however, he never competed in the Olympics. I will ask him for his opinion. LOL What are you doing these days? I saw you on “The View” in Las Vegas, NV this morning. Keep this forum alive. It is a good idea.

I thought professional athletes could compete in the Olympics, or they used to.  Now that you talk about it though, I’m not aware of any professionals competing in the Olympics for the last few years.  Maybe it’s because they think the professionals have an unfair advantage because the "Dream (basketball) Team" in the 1990s just about blew the others competing out of the water.  Among others, Michael Jordan, Scottie Pipin, Charles Barkley were members of that team and it was rather one-sided. Then the Gordeeva and Grinkov Russian skating team were professionals and got gold.

Oh, I know so much about this.  NOT!
