Ted Haggard's Wife to Oprah: I Knew About Gay Desires

Gayle Haggard thought her husband Ted could control his sexual urges, but she was wrong. And the ramifications would put her family in the national spotlight.

Gayle, the wife of former Colorado New Life Church Pastor Ted Haggard, will tell Oprah Winfrey today that she knew about her husband’s same-sex struggles for years and had hoped he had a handle on things. But then, in 2006, their world came crashing down when a male prostitute came forward about a relationship with Haggard. "The first words out of my mouth were, ‘Who are you?’" she said, according to a publicity release issued Tuesday by Harpo Productions.

Adding to the Haggards’ lack of marital bliss is the news this week that Haggard also masturbated in front of a then-22-year-old church volunteer in 2005. The volunteer, Grant Haas, told KRDO in Colorado Springs that Haggard also sent him illicit text messages including "all kind of weird things, texting me about all the different sexual positions, practices he was engaging in and it was just really weird." The church and the man reached a settlement in 2007. Haas says he spoke out now to protest a new HBO documentary on Haggard. Haas says that film, directed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s daughter, Alexandra, seems to paint Haggard as a victim, a label Haas simply couldn’t accept.

Why, you may wonder, would Haggard agree to such a project? "He talked to us because he had nothing to lose," Pelosi said. "He was down and out." But apparently Haggard isn’t too thrilled about the movie. He told the LA Times that he trusted his friend, Pelosi, not to invade his family’s privacy and he wasn’t comfortable with her using videotaped footage for the film. But Pelosi said she wanted to tell his side of the story, since the media did "a disservice" to him.

The documentary, "The Trials of Ted Haggard," premiers Thursday at 8 PM ET.

If he had not done so much damage to others with his preaching I would feel sorry for this man. A gay man stuck with all this fundamentalist baggage is a very sad thing. Some suffer alone with it, but some drag others along with them which is what Haggard has done to others like him, with his televangelism. It’s just like Senator Craig… you would feel sorry for a guy who is so messed up about his homosexuality that he marries a woman and tries to pick up men in airport men’s rooms… except that this man consistently voted against gay rights.

This is so funny! My friend and I attended this taping in Chicago a week and a half ago! For years I have wanted to get a seat for a taping of Oprah and after trying for over a decade I FINALLY get a seat and it’s for this yahoo of all people! He is so full of crap. And his wife…..don’t get me started. She must take a bath everyday in denial because she is reeking of it! He speaks about homosexuality as if it is a curse, a sin that must be prayed away. And then out of the other side of his mouth he will admit to having thoughts of wanting to be with a man, but excuse it away by saying his “therapist” told him that doesn’t mean he is gay or bisexual. It is one thing to watch two people on television who are both lying to themselves and each other, but take it from me, seeing them both in person, inches away from you spewing their delusions was excruciating! P.S. Oprah looks great in person, don’t believe that stuff about her weighing 200 pounds, and she is super nice.

Really! Here I was just about to feel sorry for the wife and how hard it must be for her. Huh! Well thank you Belinda for setting me straight.

Hope all is well…I dont get to watch Oprah anymore b/c my soon to be 3 year old takes over the TV once we get home so no more Oprah for me…I would love to attend a taping but like you I would get stuck with some yahoo I know nothing about and would fall asleep.

Hey C, I’m still researching jobs, and given the fact there are thousands applying for any one vacancy, let’s just say things aren’t going as well as I first thought they would. But, I will keep trying. Seeing her studio and the behind the scenes aspect of her show was wonderful. We had the early morning taping so we opted to take the train to Chicago and stay overnight in a hotel. We had to get up at 4 a.m. to make sure we were at the studio before 6 a.m. I was exhausted! But just being there and experiencing the show with others….live…..it was great. The worst part is you don’t know what the subject matter of the show will be in advance. So we’re all guessing as to what the show would be about. We knew we were going to see a movie, so we were excited thinking we would see a star. Big Whoop! It turned out to be a HBO documentary on Pastor Creep and then of course we had to sit through listening to him and his wife go on and on about how they don’t want to label him as gay just because he wants to have sex with men. Oh C, if you could have seen the looks on everyone’s faces in the audience. Eyes were rolling all over the place! :-)

I probably wouldnt of made a good audience member for him…Rolling eyes and laughing out loud at stupid people can be my downfall…I am glad you made it to Oprah but sorry it was for such a louse. Good Luck on the job hunt and hopefully you can make it to our end of the world soon!

I suspect it must have been fun regardless. But then again, I have enjoyed the 2 times I was called for jury duty — I find the process interesting, in addition to who makes up the “jury of our peers”. In any event, how often does Oprah tape at 6 am????? Do you know how many shows she tapes a day? How long were you in the studio? Do they stop for commercial breaks and if so, what happens during the dead time. Apparently, “after-shows” appear on the Oxygen channel, but I have never seen them. Did you find the entire experience interesting or remotely entertaining despite the subject matter of the show?

You made me laugh with that one….I agree about jury duty. “Jury of our peers” indeed! :-) Well you asked Lucinda, here goes….it’s a long one. No, I should clarify, taping doesn’t start at 6 a.m., they tell you the doors are opened at 7 a.m. for audience members to start standing in line to get in. So we showed up at 6 a.m. thinking that we would be the first ones in line. Ha! You’re given a number when you get in and we were #171 & 172! What does that tell you? Everyone was sleepy but excited at the same time. Actual taping didn’t start until 9 a.m. It’s a lot of fun. You show up and because it was cold outside they have this tent that extends to the door for everyone to stay relatively warm until you’re allowed in. Then they let us in and you snake around until you get to the coat check, where you have to give up your coat. Then you have to pass through security where they take your purse and go through it, you have to relinquish your cell phones, then walk through a metal detector. Then they give you your purse back, give you a bag with food and drinks (we had muffins, snacks and a drink). Then it’s up to this HUGE room with tons of flat screen monitors with a loop of her various shows (clips of them). Her show producers made the rounds picking people for future show topics that looked interesting. We weren’t chosen, guess I’m not interesting looking. :-) Finally at around 8:00 (It may have been a little earlier) they start herding us downstairs to the studio. The studio is smaller than it appears on T.V. But it is really cool. You’re seated by first come - first served, so those that were number 1 were right up front, but people like me and my friend were toward the back. If I ever manage to get a reservation again, I’m showing up at 5:30 a.m. Her senior producer came out with a microphone to warm up the audience. She was great! Super funny and nice. She kept us entertained and basically told us at that time what the show topic would be, (there was an audible groan when she said Haggard) what to expect in terms of taping and then asked questions of everyone. Then she explained we were going to watch the HBO movie on his controversy, and the large screen displayed an abbreviated version of the movie. Afterward she came back and asked questions of the audience about the movie. Then it was time for “restroom break” before the actual show started. So section by section she allowed people to go to the restrooms. It was very regimented. You can tell because they have done it so long, they have it down to a system! Then Oprah came out and the audience went crazy. She is so beautiful! And her stomach is flat! She has hips and a butt, but that’s about it. I do not see 200 pounds. If it’s there, she must be hiding it! :-) Her hair guy was on her, her make-up guy and a young woman who was placing her microphone down her boobs. She and those of us in the audience, had a laugh about that. She is really funny and joked with us about her shoes being only for sitting. She came out barefoot, but then excused herself to put on her heels. It was priceless! Then the show started. She did the introduction, they played a clip from the movie and then as that was playing they escorted Haggard out to the couch. Then the “real show” started. Forgive me for sounding like a broken record, I feel like I say this on every thread, but because almost every man in my family was/is clergy, I am super sensitive about hypocritical pastors. I know what a man of truth and honor is, so when I see one that lies from the pulpit……I get chills and cringe. So it wasn’t pleasant watching him and his wife. Between commercials we see a blank screen (but you know Lucinda I’m not sure about that because I was focused on Oprah) Her make-up guy would come out during each commercial to freshen up her make-up. Or her director would come out and whisper something to her. Its just a frenzy of activity between commercials. Haggard basically just sat there looking….like Haggard. I wish I could tell you exactly how long we were in the studio but I don’t wear a watch, I rely on the clock on my cell phone, and as I said they take our cell phones. The shows ends, she says her goodbyes and the director says clear and then the good part starts, what you referred to….the “after the show” part. Oprah REALLY lays into him and so does the audience. You can see both Haggard and his wife becoming visibly uneasy because of some of the questions from the audience. It was great! I was falling asleep during the taping, but the after the show part perked me up. I would say Lucinda over all the experience was great. It was one of the things on my Bucket List of things to do before I kick the bucket. So I can check it off. But everything was against us. It was taped Thursday morning a couple of weeks ago when the Midwest was in the midst of an artic freeze! I worked all day Wednesday, rushed to the train station to take an hour ride to Chicago on icy train tracks, only to find there was a train derailment! Scary. We checked into our hotel and had dinner, but didn’t make it to our rooms until almost 10 p.m. Keep in mind I said I had to get up at 4 a.m. so I was sleepy and rushed. If I had it to do over I would have taken off the day before. Spent a leisurely day in Chicago, window shopping and enjoying the city. Turn in extra early so I was rested in the morning. Left for the studio even earlier and probably would have been my usual perky, happy self. Who knows, maybe the next time a miracle happens and I am put on the reservations list again, I may end up at a show where someone I want to see is there! :-) See, now you can say through me, you’ve experienced what it’s like to see Oprah in person.

Thanks for taking the time to share all the details! I can well imagine how much fun it was, despite the ordeal of getting yourself to Chicago and the lack of sleep! If I ever get a chance to attend one of her shows, I am going to remember all your recommendations and make a couple of days of it. I’m not the groupie type, but I must confess I’d LOVE to attend the taping of one of her shows — actually even better would be to have a show like hers! :-) — I’m one of those who is interested in and curious about people, events, etc — essentially what makes people tick — and she has great access. I admire Oprah a great deal, as well. She’s extraordinary — born in Kosciusko, Mississippi (I know that area - my family is from Mississippi) to a black unwed teenager, her early years in a home without indoor plumbing — She had a great many obstacles and how far she’s come. I think I read somewhere she was a millionaire by the time she was 32! I remember hearing that had she not had the love and fundamentals provided by her grandmother in the beginning and the structure, love and security given to her by her father, her life might not have been the same. Just goes to show that indoor plumbing is of far less importance than love, structure, feeling secure — plus an education — little of which she received from her mother. Oprah clearly has a positive attitude and kept putting one foot in front of the other. She’s done some great things with her wealth too. As far as her weight goes, I think the tabloids are far too hard on her — she is a human being after all. She’s lucky to have that flat stomach — she must carry it in her hips, thighs, and butt! I agree with you, she has a very pretty face and a very warm personality. Thanks for letting me live vicariously through you! :-)

I know it’s none of my business, but you let your son decide what TV show is on? If he’s making those decisions instead of you at 3, you’re on a slippery slope. Sorry for butting in.

It is my daughter, not son…We allow her to watch tv when we first get home from work so I can cook dinner, it just so happens to be the same time Oprah comes on…Trust me what she wants to watch on tv consists of The Wiggles or Barney, those are about the only decisions we allow her to make with little argument. Once 7:30 rolls around then the tv is ours and she understands that and accepts it. But let me say this, we dont just sit her in front of the tv, we also play with her and dance and sing along with her to her shows.

Ok C Hardy…a one and a two and a …”I love you, you love me”…lmao, I occassionally babysit for a little girl that loves Barney, and that song stays in my brain for days after she’s gone. Ugh! But I’ll tolerate it because, although I was blessed with three wonderful sons, I was hoping at one point that we would have a daughter as well. This little 3 year old girl, who loves Barney so much, and some show about a big blue dog, brings a smile to my heart, she is so precious, such an adorable little character. Maybe God will bless me with a granddaughter some day… I think it’s wonderful that you sing and dance along with your daughter to her favorite shows, for me it’s more like a marathon workout session, when I babysit this little girl, but that’s ok God knows I need the excercise!

Oh Catherine the songs that I could sing right now from Barney and The Wiggles its just amazing. I catch myself singing them sitting here at work…Its amazing how their little minds are like sponges and my daughter, who will be 3 in March, remembers all the songs and the dances and the movements. My Mom finds it hard to keep up with her but she tries and that is all I ask. Its so nice to see her Daddy dancing and being silly with her also. Sometimes and I mean sometimes I will catch my Father doing the same (when she is at their house) and its so cute b/c he did not do that with us growing up. Yes I get so exausted after doing these songs and dances for hours, especially on the weekends when its too cold to go outside…I go to the bathroom just to escape it.

LOL C Hardy…my kids are grown and I still take refuge in the bathroom! It’s my sanctuary…when it’s too cold to escape out of the house. Of course I warn the “males” of the house an hour before I am going to take refuge in the bathroom, to give them plenty of time to use the facilities and to give the air freshener plenty time to do it’s job…(insert wrinkled nose face here).

Also C, you are right in not having her in front of Oprah, it’s great for adults but not for a 3 year old, you’ve got the programs on that she should be watching.
