An Oregonian woman named Carly Torres, 35, must spend 90 days in prison and pay restitution after bilking strangers out of $3,000. According to the police, Torres and her husband, 33-year old Laramie Torres, sent their three children to neighboring towns and asked for donatoin’s to send their oldest daughter to volleyball camp.

Well, it turns out there was no camp. In fact, the family used the ill-gotten cash to go on shopping sprees at their local mall, hit up their local movie theater, and, yes, attend monster truck rallies.

Torres pleaded guilty to theft charges, as did her husband. Mr. Torres, however, will only have to perform 160 hours of community service and two years probation for his role in this scam. Mrs. Torres will also face probation and the same amount of community service.

And the saddest part is, people like this have no shame. People like this who would take advantage of those reaching out to help them in a time of need lack shame. So the fact that their names are now plastered all over the internet for all the world to see is of little import. Because they will shrug off the negative responses they will receive from those in their community with an air of “so what.” There will be no feelings of guilt or remorse. Only the feelings of anger over having to serve probation and pay restitution. The real lesson that should be learned will be lost on them. How sad.
