Women Pick Up Senate Seat, Elizabeth Dole is Defeated; NC Elects its First Female Governor

Meanwhile, Democrats won seven of the 11 contested governorships. Three incumbent Republican governors were easily re-elected.
Washington Gov. Chris Gregoire won re-election in her run against Republican Dino Rossi.
Lt. Gov. Bev Perdue became the first female governor of North Carolina. With 95 of the 100 counties reporting vote totals, Perdue had just under 50 percent of the vote, while Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory, the Republican candidate, received 47 percent of the vote. McCrory conceded the race.
"I haven’t run simply because I’m the first woman candidate running, but I hear it everywhere I go," Perdue said Tuesday. "Little girls and little boys, just say `Wow, is it possible?’ So, yeah, it’s exciting, mighty exciting."
