Each day, an estimated 3,500 girls marry before their 15th birthday and another 21,000 do so before they are 18, according to figures published by the Christian humanitarian group World Vision.

The report also predicts the number of married children under age 18 will double to 100 million in the next decade — as a result of a continuing spiral of poverty, illiteracy and maternal and child health problems in impoverished and underdeveloped communities.

Also included in the findings are the most recent statistics from the Demographic and Health Survey, which lists the 15 countries where a girl is most likely to be married by age 15. Here is the list:

Rank / Country / % Married Before Age 15

1 Bangladesh 52.5
2 Niger 37.6
3 Chad 34.9
4 Ethiopia 31.4
5 India 30.9
6 Nigeria 30.6
7 Mauritania 29.3
8 Mali 25.1
9 Guinea 23.5
10 Mozambique 21.7
11 Cameroon 20.1
12 Eritrea 19.7
13 Uganda 15.9
14 Nepal 15.3
15 Nicaragua 14.6

Are the husbands fifteen, too, or are these girls marrying older men? It is an alarming report either way.

As we contemplate the issue of sex education, we should consider in that discussion the financial ramifications of teen pregnancy to the teen mother.

These are arranged marriages. The little girls have no choice in the matter. Yes, the men are usually older, and often there are other wives; Islam allows up to 4 at a time. Please remember….Chances are that these little girls have been subjected to the barbarism of female mutilation. Please go to wickipedia. It gives a graphic and informative description of what female mutilation is.

Well said Diana..No doubt most of these marriages are arranged marriages. The family does not always have the best interests of the daughter in mind. I also read a dreadful article about little girls sold by their families into prostitution in Asian countries. Some as young as 11 years old. I noticed that China is not on the list and their situation regarding girl babies is appauling. The status of women in the world in general is quite low. We American women are truly blessed and even if we think there are still things we want to see improved, we have come a long way.

After listening to my friend from Iran, who as a young girl was raised in a village, recounting that at 14 she was sold to her husband (age 30), this report did not surprise me. My friend was fortunate, because he husband was kind, but she told me tales of young girls who were not as fortunate. She is in her late 50’s and her sons are in their early 40’s, almost peers. Her husband was smart when following her hunch to buy real estate in Iran, which moved them into a more urban area. They then sold it and immigrated to Australia with the goal of migrating to America. She has proven to be very savvy about real estate and has worked that into a lucrative nest egg. She did it. Her stories about other young girls forced into marriage are always heartbreaking. They usually don’t have any idea what is in store for them when the go to live with their husbands, and come to visit their family feeling ashamed and frightened, with feeling of no choice for any other future. Skimming over World Vision’s report it is harrowing what those girls have to go through. I take heart that World Vision is there with training programs. It is also great to see that their work is reaping results. Thanks for this report. Now I know of a place I can donate to and be sure it really helps the people.
