World's Oldest Blogger Dies at 108

By The Staff at wowOwow.com

Great-great-grandmother Olive Riley, an Australian woman described as the world’s oldest Internet blogger, has died at the age of 108 after posting a final message about singing "a happy song" in her nursing home.

Riley died July 12. In her final post on June 26, she wrote: "I can’t believe I’ve been here in this nursing home for more than a week. How the days have flown, even though I’ve been in bed most of the time. I still feel weak, and can’t shake off that bad cough.

"Penny, who’s in the next bed to mine, had a visit one day this week from her daughter, who’s a professional singer. Guess what happened! She and I sang a happy song, as I do every day, and before long we were joined by several nurses, who sang along too. It was quite a concert!"

She also: "read a whole swag of e-mail messages and comments from my Internet friends today, and I was so pleased to hear from you. Thank you, one and all.” Olive, who was born in 1899 and would have turned 109 Oct. 20, had posted more than 70 entries on her blog, which she jokingly called her "blob,” since February last year.

Even at the age of 104, she was able to remember conversations and experiences she had had in 1908 and bring them to life in her blog. She shared her day-to-day musings and her life’s experiences raising three children on her own, living through two world wars and the Depression, her work as a station cook in rural Queensland and as an egg sorter and barmaid in Sydney.

Jay Leno wanted to fly her over to appear on his show, but she couldn’t in her frail condition. Riley couldn’t do the typing herself, so a small group of family-like others helped her. They ran clips of her singing, story telling, and eating oysters and drinking beer at a pub on YouTube.

"She will be mourned by thousands of Internet friends and hundreds of descendants and other relatives," writes Eric Shackle, a retired Sydney journalist who first conceived the idea of Olive writing a blog.

Shackle has posted comments e-mailed in from Olive friends and supporters from around the world.

-the Razzler (Johore, Malaysia): Oh gosh.. I am so sad!! A message for Olive. Though we’ve never met, you have always been my inspiration to be strong, to live life to it’s fullest! We love you so very much Olive!! We’ll continue to sing happy songs.. May your soul rest in peace!” - Alireza Ashtari (Iran): “i found out about you and your intersting blog in an iranian newspaper! God Bless you.” -Texas 1st (Dallas, Texas): “I read about Miss Olive late last year, and was not able to find her blog until I saw the story today. As I read the stories, they touched me very deeply, and bring back memories of listening to my Gramma Lee tell her stories of growing up in the Oklahoma Territory, USA. It was a sad day when she left us. And it seems a sadder day still now that Miss Olive has left. Mine and my family’ thoughts and prayers are with you all. Miss Olive seems to have reached out and touched the whole world. I’m glad she touched me…” - Rod Landaeta (computer scientist, Caracas, Venezuela): “Condolences from Venezuela… The world has just lost a great blogger.”Maria Amelia Lopez of Spain has apparently regained the title of the World’s Oldest Blogger. She is 96.

I love Miss Olive. What a great character, as well as everyone who helped her type. I have had the great fortune to work with many seniors, and they always made me laugh. Had so much great common sense. I had an older friend who was in her 80’s before my oldest son was born, and I used to take her to the library and post office every couple of weeks. She had emigrated from Russia. When I was about 8 1/2 months along she made sure I knew that is was okay to continue to ‘please’ my husband, and then she proceeded to tell me how to do it. I loved her. She was a doll. She would have been a great blogger.
