wOw Announces Winners to 'Women on Mt. Rushmore' Question of the Day

MARISA ACOCELLA MARCHETTO

Dear Friends:

Nearly 3,000 of you voted, and here are the winners of our first Question of the Day (Which four women would you like to see on Mount Rushmore?):

Eleanor Roosevelt: 1,763
Susan B. Anthony: 909
Rosa Parks: 842
Hilary Clinton: 718

Some strong runner ups: Harriet Tubman, Mother Theresa, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Oprah Winfrey, Gloria Steinem, Amelia Earhart and Sojourner Truth.

This week, Meg Whitman joins us for a wOw interview. Recently announcing plans to resign from the CEO-ship of eBay, she tells Lesley Stahl her career philosophy, thoughts on the presidential race and future plans.

Your comments are clear and inspiring and we are learning from them every day. This week the wOw contributors will start responding to many of your comments (our tech team is finally catching up to our irrepressible need to TALK back!)

Also, our "tech guru" Liz Smith will give you a 5-minute video on how to use our site.

XOXOX,
Joni

Gosh. where are the scientists, the artists, the writers? Why all the politicians? And how did Hillary who is nothing in history get on that list… I am sorely disappointed in my sisters on WOW. 6/2/08 lsa

hmmmm, Hillary, hmmmm, what am I missing? I’d have greater respect for her if she had dropped Bill long ago…really, love? I feel he is dragging her down and I question the decision making process that made her stay with him.

I am with you ME Anderson…. I would need to see more out of her to consider greatness of any kind. She stayed for her political agenda and here she is now.

Good women were chosen - I admire Hillary for Staying with Bill. She forgave him and that takes a strong, special person to accomplish that feat.

Every woman selected was a political being - except maybe for Rosa. Where are the writers, the opera divas, the visual artists, the philosophers, the saints, the rocket scientists, and the accomplished and inspirational women of many fields? Where is the imagination? The knowledge of female leaders? I realize this is a political year. If that is so, where is the nomination for the Goddess of Liberty who stands in NY Harbor who has been such an inspiration to so many of us? There are so many wonderful women of all types of pursuits. I expected more imagination and, thus, a broader spectrum in the selection.

Excellent choices, except for Hillary. (Since I just heard about the WoWoWow website yesterday I didn’t vote, so I suppose I shouldn’t complain). Each of the women selected made a remarkable, positive difference during her lifetime. Hillary has yet to do so. I’m just sayin….

I agree Maurine. Hillary has a background of questionable items. Yes, she was not found guilty of “Whitewater”, yes she did NOT get anything accomplished with the Health programs. She was able to get a Dem. Senatorial vacant seat in New York. What has she done on a national scale as the other women chosen? Much better choices: Chisolm, O’Connor, Albright, etc., etc. I just joined today as well…I wish it had been better thought out. The results should have shown historical ‘national significance’ statures not simply popularity…

I have to agree with Karyn Posella, their are many women of character and inspiration. Some we will all agree on and some we share differences of opinion with. I don’t want to see a womens Rushmore, but a Monument of excemptional vision and leadership for future women, Their are many women that deserve acknowledgment, but so few are chosen, even those that are not famous. Let’s chose a statue that honors all women for their incredible forsight,to voice their opinion, shows strenght and character. Let’s honor all women not just a few, because we are all rise to the occaission to do great things whether news worthy or not. If I had to pick someone to be on a female Rushmore then Sandra Day O’Connor. Margaret Thatcher, Princess Diana or any of the others previously mentioned.

With the exception of agreeing with Karyn’s comment on the diversity of women artists, writers, etc. that could have been voted on, the women that were voted for are solid choices with the exception of Hillary Clinton…as a Canadian, I fear for ALL U.S. citizens with this political race that is on…..not only does Hillary have a questionable background on many issues but she has also taken a firm and highly anti-gay stance in her political/personal beliefs.

I agree with them all, except Hillary. I don’t think she should be there until we have seen the total of her career and life. The Rushmore carvings were never completed before the death of the person, and maybe that is what should have been the criterion here. And the campaign Hillary has run in the last few weeks will have to be a distant memory before I could say that she deserved the honor.

Hilary totally deserves to be on Mt. Rushmore. Frankly, all women have done “questionable things.” At least all the ones I admire (even my personal heroine, Eleanor Roosevelt). Geez, I’ve done at least 4 questionable things myself this week and I consider myself a person of good character. If having a perfectly clean slate was a criteria to be on Mt. Rushmore, we’d have no men up there either.

I think they should be great women in HISTORY. Hillary has not made much history yet. She hasn’t done anything that spectacular.

From the vote for the Mount Rushmore candidates, maybe the same voters will vote for Hillary and she will make history as the first woman U.S. President. The U.S. is lagging behind the rest of the world on this point! I’m a woman in my 60’s and I broke a lot of “barriers” and “glass ceilings” in my day. I would like to see this last “glass ceiling” crumble and if Hillary is the only one who wants the job, then, I say, let’s support her! We need to get this last barrier out of the way in the US. Enlightened voters around the world haven’t found it difficult to vote for a woman to be the leader of their countries . Like, health care, the US is still in the 1900’s regarding Presidential selections. I had to laugh a few months ago on one of the Sunday morning Press Shows, six men were sitting around a table talking about the Presidential race. They referred to all the candidates by their last names, Obama, Romney, …….and then the final candidate was referred to as “she”, never using her last name. I found this rather interesting, and if they had permitted a woman into the room to participate in the discussion the use of a “pronoun” for the woman candidate for President would not have been permitted. They would have been encouraged into referring to “she” as Clinton.

Pulling a quote… “Some strong runner ups: Harriet Tubman, Mother Theresa, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Oprah Winfrey, Gloria Steinmen, Amelia Earhart and Sojourner Truth.” My choice would have been Mother Theresa, Amelia Earhart, Sojourner Truth and Anne Sullivan or Helen Keller. But, the bottom line is there are a ton of deserving women in history that could rightfully fill those faces. Then again, I’d vote for my Mom but doubt many others on-site would since she’s not famous ;)
