Happy Birthday to wOw! Plus a New Contributor and a New Design

Cynthia McFadden
Harry Benson

Dear Friends:

Today wowOwow turns three months old!

Like all newborns, each and every day we learn something new, try something different and receive new insights, encouragement and feedback.

We notice that the wowOwow community tells it like it is and we love that. The wOw woman is never afraid to speak her mind.

We have a few new things to share.

First, we have a new contributor in Cynthia McFadden, co-anchor of ABC News’s "Nightline" and "Primetime." Talk about a wOw woman: she is a recipient of the George Foster Peabody Award, the duPont Award, the Foreign Press Club Award and is an Emmy recipient. A graduate of Columbia Law School, she has already started reporting for wowOwow and will cover everything from the personal (she never stops talking about her ten-year-old son) to insights (she’s usually on the scene) into the breaking news of the day.

Visit Cynthia’s homepage here, read her interview with Lesley Stahl by clicking here and help us welcome her to the community.

Second, this week we’re launching a greatly expanded site, with a redesigned homepage that allows you to find more of our stories and see more of our pictures. We’ve taken great care to make it easy to navigate. Let us know what you think.

And finally, we’re starting free weekly newsletters for members of the wowOwow community. It will give us a chance to tell you what’s going on, what’s coming up and allow you to hear from the wOw contributors directly.

As always, my thanks for becoming a part of the wowOwow family. Happy Birthday to us all.

Dona, It has appeared since I last looked, but I found out that if you go to ‘Archives’ you can pick up on the very latest ‘Question’ and ‘Poll.” This site keeps proving to amaze me as I keep checking out different ways to find things. You should try the ‘Search’ as well. I’m glad I don’t have a lot of real world things to do…I spend my nights in here!

Welcome to Cynthia - I look forward to your contributions. The new site looks good, but what really impressed me was how fast the web wizards responded to previous comments re: font size, reply button, first and last buttons, top of the page. Thank for you all that! I would like to see our names at the top of a comment - I admit that there are some posters that I scroll through without reading. It’s a medical necessity - my blood pressure is borderline. LOL

Women of Wow Happy Birthday!! This site has meant so much to so many. The community forming here is rich and very exciting. They got me through my last couple of months of my son’s deployment. Kindness expressed with grace and care. All given from women who hate this war. I am grateful for you and for them. The new site is beautiful and is as slick as they come. I am still learning to navigate finding old articles. The more I click the more I learn. It is a great ride. Can’t wait for more news and topics to discuss. Thank you.

Okay, Joni Evans, It is a winner! I’ve been able to move around the site much more easily. The type font is now at maxium. The ‘Reply’ and ‘Last” comment features are in place. Thank you very much. Wonderful!

Hi Bonnie, I was able to get the font bigger only when I am on Internet Explorer. Do you know how to do it from the AOL site? Also spell check works on Explorer also. But I don’t know how to do it from AOL. I might have to log on through Explorer from now on.

Also, my Star Sign is hidden behind the seach box. Does anyone know how to fix that? I also tried to find a thread from yesterday and didn’t know the topic is was under. Then I remembered I could use my avatar and from my comment linked back to that thread. But there were some threads were I didn’t comment, but still liked reading the comments, so I am still confused on how to find them. Oh well, with change comes learning.

With change comes learning…I am not so philosophical. Sometimes what ya learn, you don’t need to know… (I even tell my doctors, look, I am not plucky, so don’t mind me.)

I’m learning to love the new site. One suggestion for today: please put the number of posts by the question so we can tell if anyone has added anything without having to open up the link over and over again. PLEASE TOM! Welcome Cynthia! Do you realize what you’ve gotten yourself into? LOL

Ms. Josie - I certainly will put my stamp on your excellent suggestion.

Josie, I suggested that on day one. It’s a great way to see if new comments are added. Hope they can do that soon. btw, I still have visions of you singing the ABCs to your cat :)

I think the old site was blog-style but the new redesign is no longer a blog. And I think it’s a good thing.

Hi J, … really liked your observations about the site … great suggestion about reversing the order of comments from new to old, I second that! …(have also previously suggested to number the comments for easier referral in a response) As to the site no longer being ‘blog-style’ but a ‘magazine’ … you are totally right, but I am not so sure that’s a good thing … there are so many magazines (and all on the web too) … and I was interested in seeing something different … more interactive, a starker design. Launching a website, instead of a magazine, is of course what’s reasonable now (economically, environmentally, contemporary) … but in magazines (as in film and literature and …) there are many different genres … and I think the editors haven’t quite found their way , yet … hence the mish-mash of topics, the sometimes clumsy headlines, the choice of editorial features, the allocation of space etc. etc. As you said: “it’s interesting to see how people react to change” … I am amused at observing my own reaction to change, of something I didn’t know existed a few weeks ago … and now I’ll grab a cup of coffee and a magazine and revert to the ‘good ol’ ways’ .. for a bit …

ulla, at huffington post they put the newer comments sooner, but i like finding out how they got there. that means old comments first. this is a magazine—a very time consuming magazine. interesting, though.

I am still trying to find my way through the ins and outs of the changes after taking a few days vacation from the site…until things quieted down. Welcome Cynthia. A new voice will be like a breath of fresh air. I used to be like a stick in the mud when things changed….but change can mean a new world, new insight, a new beginning and just plain fun. Thus my latest motto is….change is an investment that will not fail.
