Happy Birthday to wOw! Plus a New Contributor and a New Design

Cynthia McFadden
Harry Benson

Dear Friends:

Today wowOwow turns three months old!

Like all newborns, each and every day we learn something new, try something different and receive new insights, encouragement and feedback.

We notice that the wowOwow community tells it like it is and we love that. The wOw woman is never afraid to speak her mind.

We have a few new things to share.

First, we have a new contributor in Cynthia McFadden, co-anchor of ABC News’s "Nightline" and "Primetime." Talk about a wOw woman: she is a recipient of the George Foster Peabody Award, the duPont Award, the Foreign Press Club Award and is an Emmy recipient. A graduate of Columbia Law School, she has already started reporting for wowOwow and will cover everything from the personal (she never stops talking about her ten-year-old son) to insights (she’s usually on the scene) into the breaking news of the day.

Visit Cynthia’s homepage here, read her interview with Lesley Stahl by clicking here and help us welcome her to the community.

Second, this week we’re launching a greatly expanded site, with a redesigned homepage that allows you to find more of our stories and see more of our pictures. We’ve taken great care to make it easy to navigate. Let us know what you think.

And finally, we’re starting free weekly newsletters for members of the wowOwow community. It will give us a chance to tell you what’s going on, what’s coming up and allow you to hear from the wOw contributors directly.

As always, my thanks for becoming a part of the wowOwow family. Happy Birthday to us all.

Thanks Josie, I found it myself just a few minutes ago. By the by, while I have you in my site-: I am reading about Artemisia Gentileschi–do you know her? She did the marvelous Susanna and the Elders, circa 1610. Her life story is fascinating.

Phyllis- I’ve come back to see if I can do better on this site than this morning. I don’t know Artemisia…I will be looking her up for sure.

artemisia gentileschi? fantastic! she learned the drama from caravaggio, but she got the subjects from being a woman. we have her “judith with the head of holofernes” at the detroit institute of art.

This new layout will take some time getting used to. It was time for some change, this three.month-old has outgrown its first set of “clothes”! Although….. I agree with most of my friends (as I consider you all to be.Thank you everyone!) PLEASE, you really need to bring back the first/last options, some topics have really long threads and it takes forever to get to the newer replies. Finally we have categories! Thank you for that. Might I give a suggestion? Please put them in alphabetical order - it would make it much easier to find what you’re looking for….. And lastly…. Happy Birthday Wow! The past three months have been the most fun I’ve had in a long long time!!! :-)

Congrats on new format…but please bring back the “first”, “last”, and “back to the top” features in the reader comments area. The lack of continuity in the thread of comments can be really frustrating. Don’t know if it’s possible to solve this. All in all, the site is thought provoking and worth a daily visit. Thanks.

I don’t know if anyone else has tried this yet but …. if you go to the top-right corner of the page you’ll see MY HOME & SIGN IN in the red border: I clicked on MY HOME and it took my to all my comments. When you click on the topic title that you responded to, it will take you to THAT PAGE! LOVE IT!

Linda, you can just click on your photo and it will take you to all the comments you’ve made on this site……..I like that feature. You can go to anyone’s site by clicking on their photo (or Avatar)

Thanks Dona, you are one of the many “peaches” on this site and I do very much enjoy your posts.

Happy, happy birthday. You’re doing fine! Just try to burp the baby a little more to get the hot air out. The diversity is amazing, as are the contributors.

Happy Birthday WOW!!! WOW three months old so far WOW! I find the home page confusing and cluttered in a sensory overload kind of way. The advertising is way too much and way heavy (takes up way to much room at the top in multiple sections) at the top of the page. In a perfect world I’d like to see the ads at the bottom of the page or better yet none at all…after all, who can afford the advertisers stuff in this economy anyways? Not your average sister thats for sure…and yep were feeling the pinch here in Canada too. I wish the site were better organized starting from the first page on. Its hard to orientate oneself around this new one after such a clear and simple predecessor. Perhaps don’t fix what was’nt broke? The few bells and whistles now added could have been added onto the old site. I don’t feel we outgrew the old site it was still beta after all. I was used to it and it was comfortable and familiar to me it was a pleasure to visit. Like the other WOWer said, prove to me this version is better! I have to be honest. Its not working for me, I don’t know where to go first on the home page as its all screaming for my attention and its making me dizzy. Lumping all of our posts under our identities is good thing. Trying to be truthful and critique these big changes in a non-negative way. Keep on keeping on, here’s to WOW!

You’re very welcome! We’re listening very closely to what you all think of the site. So far, I’ve gotten rid of italics for the comments, enlarged the font sizes for article and comment text, added, first, previous and last links back and brought back the “back to top” link at the bottom. I’ve also added a text size selector to the top of the article pages that will let you permanently define text size you like. Much more to come in the following days and weeks!

Thank you, wOw web guru! … this is so appreciated … gave you guys a little shout out a few minutes ago … but with all the inbetween-comments it has moved away … but I love that the ‘reply/sub-comments’ are now further indented, it makes it easier to figure out how the thread went along! Again: THANKS!
