I am still not impressed, he has to prove himself. Sorry, but that is the way that I feel. He is just a person, nothing more — and to me talk is cheap. I am glad Bush is out, but my heart is not racing in happiness like others.

But can you at least find some joy in the historical significance of this election?

Words are not enough, but they are necessary. We won our independence through force of arms, but it was words that inspired our forefathers to take up those arms and risk all for that freedom. Talk is cheap when nothing is said, when none are inspired. Obama’s exceptional ability to inspire was critical to his election, and remains critical to his ability to lead this country. Nobody can impress or inspire everyone, but your impression that he has hearts “racing in happiness” shows that he has begun to prove his ability to lead. And yes, it will take time to see if he will do so successfully. A month or so from now, when the euphoria wears off, when the confirmations are hopefully over, when we are well into the first 100 days, when analog TV has gone dark, that will be a better time to gage the pulse of America and Obama44.

I know Rho but the appropriate thing to do is to let the rest of us have today. We know how you feel and you are entitled to your opinion. You can go back to your “feelings” about the new president tomorrow. I, like you, will be paying attention and hoping for the proof. I know it will take some time but it must come. Have a great day!

Rho — The Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights are “words.” Words express the principles by which WOmen and men live.

That was an extraordinary speech—the man continues to amaze me—it was a speech of strength and hope and a great look to the future and for the future. After 40 years my faith in the presidency is once again restored. I believe this man can do what he says and he will do it for all of us.

Bit too much God in the speech for my taste. It had some brilliant moments about 2/3rd way through. That’s when it was strongest. Started off weak, ended so-so. But midway it caught fire. Too bad the speech didn’t stop then. I had to watch on CSPAN because I couldn’t stand the yammering of all the network anchors anymore. Wanted to watch it clean. CSPAN had a shot of Obama’s mother-in-law falling asleep mid-speech. They quickly cut away when they saw this. Did the other networks catch this shot?

I thought Biden was closing his eyes, but it turned out he was reading something. I’ve been watching on NBC and they did not interrupt. Glad you liked a bit of that speech ;>)

I agree with you…….”Bit too much God in the speech for my taste”. And I think the Rev. Rick Warren was terrible, hogged the spotlight too long ! Although I did enjoy the preacher at the end ! !

Warren was atrocious. I had to leave the room when he started blustering. I have managed to almost drive the memory from my mind. Elizabeth Alexander was also fairly ho-hum. But how does anyone follow an act like Maya Angelou? She remains my favorite inaug. poet so far. (It’s all in the delivery) It was still a great moment. Except for the Roberts flubs - he needs a good tongue-lashing.

Pi I definitely thought Warren was too long. If he really believes in God, then get out of the way and let God in. Elizabeth Alexander was too long as well, but for me - Aretha wasn’t long enough, she had poetry and soul just dripping off of her. She hates to sing in the cold. When she performs the air conditioners are turned off, so I think with a second song we would have gotten even more joy.

I was nearly nauseous by the time Warren finished. UGH!

Have to say as much I love Obama and think he is a great speaker….it was more a ‘workmanlike’ speech than soaring rhectoric. But I must say I rewatched JFK’s speech that was poetry, and Reagan’s that was totally pragmatic and straightforward….and think Obama’s was right in the center. It was muscular and detailed….one to be reread rather than to be totally absorbed on the spot. My big take away was ‘responsibility’ for all….the whole world….let’s get in this together. I think that’s true and did love that.
