While I do not support the draft, at least Obama knows that women are already serving in combat. Does McCain even understand that, or are we going back to the days when Conservatives would argue that women are not fit for combat because they get “periods”? We have women in the police and fire departments that risk their lives every day in service to their communities. Obama is not forcing women to join, he is saying they should not be excluded if they want to serve.

Carol: Does McCain even understand that, or are we going back to the days when Conservatives would argue that women are not fit for combat because they get “periods”? This is what the article said: According to his campaign, Mr. McCain supports the current Department of Defense restrictions on women in combat units, including armor, field artillery and special forces. Obviously McCain understands the military, and he understands women. Granted there are some, perhaps like Gov. Palin, who would have the fortitude and guts to mix it up with the best of them, but most women I know would hesitate at the thought of blasting someone’s head off. Obama is not forcing women to join, he is saying they should not be excluded if they want to serve. According to the article, this is Obama’s position: But he did say women should be expected to register with the Selective Service, comparing the role of women to black soldiers and airmen who served during World War II, when the armed forces were still segregated. What would be the penalty if women did not register? Would they just be ostracized or would they be subject to imprisonment as men were in WWII. It follows that if women are expected to register, that they could face combat duty. If I were a young woman, this would be a scarier issue to me than the possibility of Roe vs Wade being tampered with.
