I dread hearing the venom.

They’ll be pulling out all the stops; this may be McCain’s last opportunity to significantly sway the pendulum back towards his side.

James, Is there a debate after this one, or is this it?

I thought they intended to have three debates. I think there’s another one in NY on the 15h.

Thank you, Amelie, I wasn’t sure. By then we’ll all be worn out. One only wonders what will be going on by then.

There’s the townhall-style gabfest in Nashville on Oct. 7th and, on the 15th, they’ll debate at Hofstra University in New York on domestic-policy issues.

Sigh. I was just starting to recover from 9-11. This is the worst terrorist attack on North America ever! Who knew these “terrorists” would be locally born, largely Judeo-Christian, be wearin suits and talkin the talk and walkin the walk. I feel sorry for Obama if he wins now. I almost wish neo-cons would have to clean it all up themselves. But at whose expense for 4 more years of “monetyranny” abuse? Very confusing times.

Amelie, Probably the biggest problem for the neo-cons is moving from 9/11 to 9/12, and we are going to have to do that if we are to be a game player in the 21st century. This administration really hasn’t made us that more secure; they have created a very cumbersome bureauocracy call Homeland Security and screwed up FEMA. They have ruled with fear instead of innovation. That is the power they have over us. Fear, secrecy and suspiscion of each other. In this country, we don’t do so well with this kind of governing. We are too outgoing, optimistic and forward looking, so we need to get back to doing what we do best. And, you are correct: I feel for the poor guy who has to look at the mess he’s inheritied. We still don’t know what’s in all of the signing statements that Bush so stealthily signed. And, it’s not being discussed. One reason I am not voting for McCain is that I think one of the ways that Bush has put our country and Constitution in jeopardy is by having a secret/stealth administration.

Diana: I am reading at this time “The Limits of Power” by Andrew Bacevich. If you recall he was on Bill Moyers and Maureen and I talked about him so favorably. Here is what he has to say about 9/11: Recalling how Washington saw the post-Cold War world and America’s place in (or atop) it helps us to understand why policy makers failed to anticipate, deter, or deflect the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. A political elite preoccupied with the governance of empire paid little attention to protecting the United Sates itself. In practical terms, prior to 9/11 the mission of homeland defense was unassigned. I encourage you to read this book–––it spells out the end of American exceptionalism. As Mark Danner writes,”…[it] gets at the heart of the delusions that have crippled the country’s foreign policy for decades.”

Well, will wonders never cease, Phyllis. This book is next in my book queue, and I bought it after seeing the Bill Moyers show. You know what they say about great minds….

Amelie, expressing similar concerns, i had not read your post here when I wrote mine on the previous page this morning. The last time I remember being truly frightened by international news was in the early 50’s when I was 6 or 7, and Ed Sullivan interrupted his show to say he had an announcement to make and that parents might want to send their younger children out of the room. It was the beginning of the Korean War. I’m beginning to wonder if the world wasn’t really safer when we had the Cold War…..more later. Peace and grace

Step away from the BLOG!
It’s like living in a Banana Republic….shifting made-up realities and everyday a new crisis. The only thing haven’t had is an Argentina type currency melt-down when needed a wheelbarrow for your cash….I see that coming, sad to say.

Yes Steppie. In Germany they had the wheelbarrows of money prior to Hitler’s rise. If Bush has been actually reading history books, the next step would be to declared bankruptcy and NOT pay back any of his creditors (like China). Hilter did that too. He just said, “Nein! We can’t every pay you back so let’s just forget about it. Also, I spoke to my friend, an architect, who lives in Bangkok back in Sept during the first crash. I asked him his thoughts and I marveled that he was just so desensitized to the whole thing. His reply was that there is a meltdown in Asia every week.
