Comment to The Question of the Day on October 2

By kermie b on 10/02/2008 2:03 am
Let it begin with a wake-up call.
A friend of mine died this morning. She was in her mid-50s; I consider her young. Considered. She was overworked, trying to save up for retirement, always doing for others. I cannot recall a single bad thing about her, except I never saw her doing anything just for herself.
Sometimes we work and work and work and never make it to retirement. My parents never did. And my friend never will.
Stress is an inner violence that is a killer. My friend died from a massive coronary. She seemed fine yesterday. But she wasn’t.
I have never heard of National Non-Violence Day (does Hallmark profit?) but it is as good a day as any to learn to meditate and take it easy on our own hearts, our own minds, our own lives.

Oh, how I envy women that can go out with little bitty purses (or none at all).
I always feel the need to tote around too much. I joke that if I was lost in the woods, I’d be able to survive for three days on what I carry in my purse before I’d have to try to find civilisation.
Like Judith Martin, I always have a book in my purse. I travel by bus, & burying my nose in a book discourages the weirdos from annoying me.
I have a wallet big enough for my checkbook & passport, a 100-pill sized bottle of Exedrin, a business card case, a bottle of water, a set of keys so big I could hurt someone with it (six keys but nine or ten key chain doodads including a Swiss Army knife & a nail clipper, in case I have to construct a shelter, butcher something, & do my nails while I’m lost in the woods), lots of make-up, the mail I grabbed on the way out of the house, cough drops, & some kind of snack, plus a lot of loose change, bus tickets, crumbs, & unidentified sticky bits.
Oh, & when I’m traveling, if I check my luggage, I keep an extra pair of underpants in my purse in case the airline loses my luggage.

Comment to The Question of the Day on September 30

By Diane T on 09/30/2008 12:43 am
A family is too big when there is not enough money, not enough food, not enough attention, and not enough time for parents to make a family. Frankly, there are so many children in our country that have no family, and there are not enough reputable foster familes to take care of them, so if a couple is so dedicated to having lots of children around them, why not adopt some?
I wonder why, when we have such limited resources in this fragile world, why would a couple seek to birth so many children? Perhaps, they would be well advised to read Tom Friedman’s most recent book, Hot, Flat&Crowded.

Will Palin wear a tie?
Will Biden wear a dress? I suspect he’s got great legs.

I feel saturated in this topic. And I’m frustrated in how little I understand about what fate is being decided to get out of this huge mess. I was reminded by a song from my one of my favorite rock groups, Rush. They did a song called “The Big Money” in 1985 that ends:
Big money goes around the world
Big money give and take
Big money done a power of good
Big money make mistakes
Big money got a heavy hand
Big money take control
Big money got a mean streak
Big money got no soul…
The whole song is darn near prophetic.

Let there be peace on Earth and let it begin with-in.
Peace is just a concept. It must begin within the hearts and minds of all mankind at the same time to be realized.
When one really thinks about it, peace is really the opposite of fear.

It was an accident that I became eccentric. I like being different from the norm. It was an accident that I became old too. That is not one of my favorite attributes.
