Comment to A Friend Stopped By on June 2

Think what you will of her, she certainly sparked an interesting discussion about free speech vs. censorship, and the power of language. It’s interesting to me that the most commented articles are, in order, "Message to..Whiney..Democrats," "…Catch-22.." (about finance), and Ann Coulter. Politics, finance and freedom of speech seems to be what lights a fire under women over 40. Interesting.

Comment to The Question of the Day on June 3

I wrote this too a while back: it"s also what Lincoln’s said in his 1st inaugural address to the Union:
We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.
And that is patriotism of the first order too. I have yet to see or read anyone since that time that said it better.

We live in such an isolated society. Tennesse Williams said we all live in solitary confinement in our minds. The days of just sitting around, shooting the breeze don’t happen. Busy, busy people. I think loneliness and/or isolation is probably the largest social problem plaguing people at least in the U.S. Our life style could use more "quality" injected into it. With that said, I don;t like to talk to people when I fly, although I have had some great conversations with interesting people. One in particular a jazz musician from NYC who played with Rubin Blades and he was originally from Panama. My problme with starting a conversation is that some people then think the conversation has to continue for the duration of the flight.

In the multitude of days filtered by, I thought gray hair made one look old and should be avoided at all costs … funny how one’s perspective changes as one gets older. As I approach 43, and more and more sinewy, white strands spurt out here and there on my own head—unruly and totally with a mind of their own—I now see gray hair as a mark of class, sophistication, and yes, definitely power.
Meryl looks marvelous with gray hair, by the way!

I joined the Army before women were allowed to serve in combat arms positions. I am a retired WAC with 17 years of service. As of January 1,1977, the Women’s Army Corp was disolved and we all became ‘soldiers’ in harms way serving our country. That is the reason that there are more women dying in this war than any other. They are allowed to do the same jobs as the men with the same pay. So if you don’t mind…I prefer to stand at attention, give them a proper salute, and the respect they deserve.
