wOw's Views on the News: Is It Time for Clinton or Obama to Throw In the Towel?

By staying in the race, are the Democratic candidates inadvertently sabotaging their party’s chances of winning the election? This weekend, Howard Dean called on Clinton or Obama to drop out of the race for the candidacy by June. "Either of these candidates, if it’s time for them to go, they’ll know it and they will go," Dean said, according to the Associated Press. But will they? Should they? And if so, should they wait until the Puerto Rico primary or should the move be made now?

Here’s the thing. We have all been dragged down the campaign road by the media until we’re ragged. I am so bloody sick of the commentaries, the polls, the speculations, the accusations, the character assassinations, the innuendos…all of it! If this were a less critical election cycle and we Americans were not in real danger of seeing our country fail economically and diplomatically, the media circus might be entertaining. But I have such deep concern for the future of this country and for the young people who are inheriting the mess, that I keep hoping for someone, anyone, to take the high road and point the political process in the direction of real solutions rather than focusing on vulnerabilities of opponents. It’s time for the Democratic candidates to stop the nastiness and look Presidential, regardless of how long the contest for the nomination continues. Would conceding be the best path for either Clinton or Obama? Would such a decision serve the greater good? I don’t know the answer. My gut says they should go through the primaries and let the people speak. The superdelegates are an artificial and unnecessary invention that smacks of deal-making. At this point, I want to hear only from the candidates themselves…not their surrogates and definitely not from the talking heads in the media. At the end of the process I hope for a President whose ethics guide him or her and whose leadership is based on keen insightfulness and intelligence. If it takes several more months for that to happen, I’ll happily wait.

I can’t believe no one from Michigan has pointed out that we have a female Democractic governor - Jennifer Granholm.

Okay, you guys, I ignored Michael, but I really didn’t appreciate the “darling mugsy” attached to that. Senator Clinton and Senator Obama are the correct terms for people we do not know and who have been elected to public office in the United States, as I have said previously. The viciousness of the emails floating around the country about both of these people is a national disgrace. They have worked very hard and people have donated tons of money to this contest, and the jackasses who treat them in that way are boneheads who I thank the frames that they only have one vote. The total lack of dignity and respect awarded the Clintons, who have given their entire lives to public service when they could have been off being very successful robber barons with the rest of ‘em is appalling. Bush is in the white house because it’s the only job his dad could get him. We know that for a fact, since he ran an oil company into the ground, and has killed countless people in the process of sitting there. He’s totally earned my disrespect and contempt. Sen. Obama? I haven’t seen what he will do, but I don’t talk about him that way. I think he’s a spoiler. But I can’t believe Michael misread us so totally as to believe we wouldn’t think him a total jerk for this vicious little remark.

Does ‘the great fat universal god of cookie dough’ sound anything like Pavarotti and Mirella Freni ala the “Final scene of “La Bohème” - Part 1” (which I am listening to, as we type)? “Mother, Father and The Holy Sound!” Cookies for everybody!

I think it is time we revamped our election process in this country. I would propose a 4 week campaign for whoever would like to run for president - a 24 hour national voting period where we whittle the candidates down to - oh - 2 or 3 or 4. Then an 8 week campaign, then another 24 hour national voting period where we elect our president. If a candidate can’t tell us their platform in that time period, then they shouldn’t be running. These long long long long campaigns are no good - it has only led to sniping and arguing semantics. I would like to see all of them focus on the issues. Forget mis-statements and rogue supporters - what about gas prices? or health care? or the war?

This has gone beyond craziness. Hillary should throw in the towel. The only way to win now is through back office negotiations, arm twisting, political wrangling. The last thing this country needs. I truly believe that Obama has a chance to change the tone. To give the country something to rally around. To bring people together. But this silly partisan bickering is crazy. Sorry, Hillary, but you blew it long ago and you’re now just looking like a poor loser.

We haven’t voted in Oregon yet! The reason it feels so long is because so many states moved their primary that this contest was front loaded and the candidates had too much time in the middle to get into trouble. In the past they would have been going from primary to primary too busy talking to people about their positions to get into these fusses. If you want to change things make the states spread out their primaries again.

Yes, they should both stay until the Super Delegates cast their votes. As a volunteer for Hillary, I want both to stay in the race until it’s over. Heck, this is history in the making! Let’s enjoy the ride as long as we can!!
