Sen. Obama unequivocally denounced his former pastor yesterday,
expressing his outrage and sadness at Rev. Wright’s recent speeches. Click here to read about it on MSNBC. Was this
the right thing for Obama to do? Should he be ignoring Rev. Wright altogether
at this point? Ultimately, will the controversy derail Obama’s candidacy? Does
this justify Sen. Clinton’s decision to remain in the race, despite her long
odds and growing pressure from some Democrats?
Obama certainly should have replied to the Rev. Wright’s diatribes. The question is whether it’s too little, too late. Obama has been gravely weakened, in my opinion, in the last few weeks by Wright, the debate and the outcome of the primary in Pennsylvania. We’ll know more after Tuesday and I suspect if Hillary wins one or both of those primaries, that she will end up being the candidate. The super delegates are clearly worried about his electability and will be more so if his showing next week is not good. Yes, he could definitely be derailed.
So, finally, a lot of Obama believers are now having “buyer’s remorse.” Senator Clinton’s sticking to her guns may well pay off. It’s unfair that the ego of the Rev. Wright could derail Obama, but life isn’t always fair and Obama didn’t dump the Rev. as he should have at the get-go. What a fabulous all-American drama! I can’t wait to see how it plays out. And I’m betting that — whoever the Democratic nominee is — we’ll see a landslide election sweeping out the McCain-Bush-war ticket.

I would like to see more politicians who aren’t particularly religious at all, or who make a practice of visiting a different church in their constituency once a week. The country will be better off when religion is a nonissue in politics, as it should be in government. I wonder if we will ever grow up enough to have openly agnostic or atheistic politicians?
To me it’s a shame that Senator Obama feels that he has to answer for the statements of his former pastor. It’s like asking every Catholic politician to answer for every ridiculous thing the Pope says. Do we do that?

Did you know that Barbara Reynolds, an avid Clinton supporter, was behind the invitation for Wright to talk to the news press on Monday? It is amazing to me that we are so mired in Rev. Wright, derailing what probably might be or could have been the kind of leader that would have healed us as a Nation. Instead, we let our media keep at this and at this ad nauseum. Are we not capable, as adults, to have serious discussion about the problems facing us? We should demand better of our media and ourselves. Until we do, the politics of personal destruction, as practiced by Clinton, will continue to win the day. We will get what we deserve.

Thank You Maria for that tidbit of info.Didn’t know who,but suspected it WAS someone in her camp that stirred the mess!!!Sounds like a Clinton move.A majority of people WANT Obama to be this BAD,RADICAL,MYSTERIOUS person, then ALL Excuses would be out the window why “not to vote for him”.The Clinton’s have a loong line of destruction surrounding them, people should just do their homework and maybe turn OFF the media for a day.

Thank you, Maria, for your wise comments. We have such short memories; do we not remember the SwiftBoating and how it de-railed the Kerry campaign? One of our main issues in this country is that we are not being more demanding of all the media to give us non-biased facts and to address the relavent issues of our day.

Maria, I believe it was CNN I was watching yesterday when an anchor said Barbara Reynolds tried getting Reverend Wright as a speaker at the National Press Club in early 2007. Apparently, the Press Club wanted him there now because he is now in the news. So, if true, Ms Reynolds, a Clinton top supporter, did not suddenly plan to sabotage Obama. Can anyone else verify this?
Mugsy Peabody - 4/30/2008 6:33 PM
So, Maria, this is how we get off the rails. Obama doesn’t need to be responsible for Rev. Wright. But the evil Hillary is responsible for what Geraldine Ferraro says and what Barbara Reynolds does? Level playing field, please. What is sauce for the gander is sauce for the goose.
Marge Ferriol - 5/1/2008 2:17 AM
Bravo Mugsy, but I should also add that no one put words in Rev Wrights mouth. He also did two other appearances before this one.

Appreciate your perspective, Maria. We are talking about serious consequences here.
p.s. Don’t lose faith, there are many who continue to fight for the decent leadership we need and deserve, and there is plenty of strength in number!

Amen, QE3. I think it’s a shame he even has to answer. Particularly when no one (except Whoopi on The View yesterday) is talking about Rev. Billy Graham, the spiritual leader of SEVERAL former presidents, and his hatred of the jews, Rev. Hagee’s comments while representing McCain, or what about McCain’s “spiritual guide” Rod Parsley, talking about America being founded to destroy Islam??
Mugsy Peabody - 5/2/2008 3:15 AM
Well, I did yesterday… Graham is a royal pain in the ass, as far as I’m concerned. My dad used to say the great thing about his “conventions” is that it got all the nuts off the street at the same time. I’ve never really much trusted a preacher who couldn’t sing or dance. And when they start hanging out with politicians, well….
