wOw's Views on the News: Rupert Murdoch Bids $580M for Newsday

By The Staff at wowOwow.com

Rupert Murdoch bid $580 million for Newsday in hopes of adding it to his collection of New York-based newspapers. He already owns two of the nation’s top ten highest-circulation newspapers — The Wall Street Journal and the New York Post. Read about it here in The New York Times and here in Newsday. Some say Murdoch is an old-fashioned press baron, destroying America’s business paper of record; others say he is simply shoring up an ailing industry just in time. What do you think?

Dr. McGinnis - Yes, our government was designed that way and for good reason. And in that spirit, as far as free enterprise, that is exactly why there are anti trust laws in place, to prevent monopolies such as this. Allowing someone to control what the public reads or watches on television is what they do in socialist countries, not free ones.

Last time I looked, Keith Olbermann was still mouthing off over MSNBC, looks like Murdoch is not very good at “controlling” the media.

McGin-As Liz pointed out, the brilliant Keith Olbermann is punching bag for dumb-arse Bill “I love sex with falafel” and vice versa. OK she didn’t use that exact language. Murdock is a business man. Controversy increases audience. In Urbane vs. Neanderthal Murdock has the Red-States Blue-States [as a mindset not actually geography] duking it ou nightly on TV. Civil War Part Deux minus the uniforms.

Dr. McGinnis— The Constitution was established to preserve a nation ‘Of, For, and By The People” and for “The Common Good.” Today, Corporations have the legal status of human beings while actual human rights are taken away. Dangerous unregulated made up ‘financial” instruments that Warren Buffet called “sewage” are destroying the stability of our economy; ie since 2000 derivatives have gone from $9 trillion in value when our GNP was $14 trillion to $700 trillion today worldwide when global wealth is one-seventh that figure. They were the underlying cause of the sub-prime debacle, the greatest number of foreclosures in US history, they helped sweep $4 trillion of value out of our markets with the Citigroup, Enron, World Com, JP Morgan frauds, and are a ticking time bomb. And 1/2 the global population exists on less than $2 a day. Aren’t the Freepers missing one of their idiots, “Dr.”? Let’s see, you popped up when MK got smacked down so should we address you as ‘Dr. Doppleganger’? There are FEW checks and balances today, Bush Inc and their corporate cronies have a lock on the Supreme Court, Justice, Intelligence, and Congress is under control of the Demos…IF you can term Pelosi/Reid leaders. Pelosi/Reid have a CONSTITUTIONAL duty to impeach Bush/Cheney. It is not their call to take impeachment off the table when laws have been broken. Adam Smith capitalism/unrestrained free markets have created the dangerous world we live in today. All organizations be they families, corporations or nations require laws, not unrestrained anarchy. This is a nation of laws, not MEN. The GOP is always for controlling the people and freeing the corporations. Democrats are for freeing the people and making the corporations carry their own weight. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjS60TaD_J8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YNyn1XGyWg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A87wF7DuvS0 http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7338326.stm Further, all strong US economies occurred under democratic reasonable controls to prevent predatory corporate/banking behavior. Your statements are so blind it is breathtaking. And the WTO and NAFTA unleashed have produced a much more dangerous world, unstable markets and growing global poverty. Some charts of economic performance by the “MBA President” only his Dad was worse. http://krugman.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/01/28/why-doesnt-bush-get-economic…

Wow! So much anger, and gloom and doom. But I’m sure it will be allllright again when the Dems take over. Food will taste better, birds will sing more, the homeless problem will go away, and all will be right with the world. But don’t worry, if McCain wins, all is not lost, you still have Global Warming to fall back on—the earth is going to be destroyed anyway. So, as I see it, it’s a win/win for you and your pals. Cheer Up! Oh, I forgot, you don’t know how to be happy, you’re liberals. (Honestly, Madam, You Tube and Wikipedia as sources of information?? How about www.Iwillbelieveanything…..)

There’s nothing wrong with You Tube as a vehicle for public consumption if the vid is a grab off something reliable. Ditto Wikipedia. The reason all the news, corporations, and advertising firms etc are flocking to the Internet is that the MSM just makes everything up. I’m done with you. You note that some of the links were to the World Economic Conference at Davos, to Bloomberg, to Federal Government statistics. You’re too stupid to waste time further time with Mark Klein/McGin. You make unsupported statements and are a roaring idiot. Believe as you wish.

Do I sense a little defensiveness, “projection” maybe? Always resorting to name calling when someone has a different point of view. You were the one that responded to my comments, I was just defending my position. It’s sad that you can only converse with people who share your beliefs and opinions. By the way, name one “unsupported statement”.

Dr. — I’m one of the old fashioned people that read the paper from cover too cover each day. Gave up a long time ago on ANY of the TV stations. Be careful what you say on WOW — these “kitties” have long claws. NEVER disagree with them or try to have a civilized conversation with them. I’m just about to throw in the towel on WOW — I am so disappointed with the scratches. I say that if Mr. Murdoc wants to make more money — it’s his money. If I win the lottery I hope to be able to do whatever I want with my money! It’s just the way it is!

Ginny, Thanks for the support. Forget “sniper fire”, they launched a full fledged attack! But I have to say, it’s like shooting fish in a barrel. Can you tell me who MK is? Dr. M

Ginny, know what you mean about the anger on this site. I didn’t come here for that, but even the angry ones have their points - besides claws, and that is okay with me. I prefer civilized conversation, not to be beat over the head any time I bring up a point of disagreement. Please don’t quit the site. Keep being honest about who you are and your view of the world. They think what they think, and I would be the last person to tell them that they didn’t have a right to think it or speak it. This is still America and we’ve got free speech.

Ginny— Maybe reread the Constitution, Decl of Independance, and Bill of Rights and also figure out what media consolidation is all about and how it effects YOUR life and everyone’s life. As far as the kitties with long claws…that’s right….put it out there and expect a response whether they agree or disagree…..we all aren’t the guns and god/faith over facts crowd.

Ok Mark, you still don’t get it do you? Where you see anger and gloom and doom, I see reality. You need to get your head outta you ass as quickly as possible. Though I doubt that that would do one bit of good. As for wikipoedia and Youtube—I use them all them time for my rfesearch and I find with relatively few exceptions that they are accurate. If McCain takes over or Hils for that matter it’s more of the dame old crap we’ve had for the past 40 years. Drf McGinnis my ass.
