wOw's Views on the News: Rupert Murdoch Bids $580M for Newsday

By The Staff at wowOwow.com
© AP

Rupert Murdoch bid $580 million for Newsday in hopes of adding it to his collection of New York-based newspapers. He already owns two of the nation’s top ten highest-circulation newspapers — The Wall Street Journal and the New York Post. Read about it here in The New York Times and here in Newsday. Some say Murdoch is an old-fashioned press baron, destroying America’s business paper of record; others say he is simply shoring up an ailing industry just in time. What do you think?

Bully? It is you and your cohorts who are the bullies. I have not called any of you names (though several come to mind), yet all of you continue to insult me. I thought this was supposed to be a “civil” discussion. I guess anyone who doesn’t agree with your point of view is to be dismissed. I gather from the posts, this is not the first time you have engaged in this bully-type behavior.

We are not bullying you, Dr. (if you are a Dr.) McGinnis. We are telling you that you are not welcome at this party and you should go away. I’m sure this is not the first time someone has told you that. This is a website for women over 40. Apparently you don’t have a peer group, or you would know that this isn’t yours and you don’t belong here. But when people respond to you, you become abusive. So, guess what?

How do you know I’m not a woman over 40 or a doctor? I thought you people were all about facts. You have absolutely no data whatsoever to support that assumption, but then again, that tends to be SOP for your bunch. Also, how dare you tell me to go away! I have just as much right here as you do and besides, I’m having fun!

No woman over 40 in her right mind would spew out all the junk coming from your posts. If you’re not a doctor or an ivy-leaguer, then you’re a liar. I think people are tired of you because you have taken up so much space with baiting and criticizing. If that is you’re idea of fun, then I am so sorry you have no life. Take it easy, “Dr.” and realize there are some good and thoughtful people contributing here…and most of us are women.

Well excuse me Maurine, only Democrat women are allowed to comment on this site? No room for opposing opinions and a real debate on the issues—how “open-minded” of you. The hostility toward conservative women on this site is disgusting. I guess the “good and thoughtful people” are only the ones that share your beliefs.

The common defence and the common good go hand in hand, As for you Ivey league doctorate it certainly taught you one thing: to make foolish assumptions. That truth sir is self evident in your writing.

Mark old boy we lost the checks and balances when BushCO came into power. It’s all the executive now along with trillions in debt to China. As for the government deciding they already are—where have you been the past 7 years. WE have domestic surveillance, torture, rendition and all on a republican agenda. GEt readl, Mark.

Frances, I worked hard with organizations and activists across the US who, like me, tried to prevent the Telecommunications Act of 1996 from becoming law. When it did pass the resulting deregulation allowed US media consolidate to shrink from ownership by 50 corporations in 1983 to the 5 corporations that own the majority of US media today—not a good think in a so-called democracy. Before 1927, US public airwaves were controlled by the Department of Commerce. The Federal Radio Act of 1927 nationalized the airwaves and formed what became the FCC. In 1934 The Communications Act expanded the FCC’s authority over US airwaves, and large broadcasters like, ABC and NBC, lobbied for extra costs on licenses to price out independents. Then the Telecom Act of 1996 (under Clinton) allowed single-company ownership of media in a market up to 45%. Disney, Time Warner, Rupert Murdock’s News Corp, Bertelsmann AG, and General Electric together own more than 90% of the media holdings in the US. Many of us who watched the snowballing consolidation in horror began working in the 1990s to roll it back or slow it down as the giants rolled everything up. In the process they helped shape the lies that led us into a disasterous ‘war’, they homogenized art, radio, and fired reporters who filed negative reports on major sponsors like Monsanto. And conflicts of interest abound; GE is a defense contractor and owns NBC and MSNBC. Rupert Murdock’s Fox News is an unabashed mouthpiece for the Bush Administration. Here’s a MUST LISTEN TO short essay by Bill Moyers on Rupert Murdock’s enormous power: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vA5z-quW2E8 Ditto for this short Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TF8qmTvMb40 Here is JFK warning us of the dangers of media consolidation, secret societies and freedom of the press: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlghYpDx0f4 More related links of interest: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3PAOItHDYk http://www.commonblog.com/story/2008/4/1/1234/78779 http://www.stopbigmedia.com/comment.php http://www.commoncause.org/site/pp.asp?c=dkLNK1MQIwG&b=192086 http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2007/12/03/media_consolidation/ http://www.fair.org/index.php

Georg Soros is far more dangerous than Rupert Murdoch, but I don’t think Bill Moyers will tell you that. As to Fox News, the left wing controlled media finally gets a little competition. I guess we better pass a law or make a regulation to take care of that.

George Soros does NOT have ANYWHERE near the influence or platform of Rupert Murdock, whose media holdings are listed below. Soros DID have a now defunct 527 organization ACT. There is no LEFT-WING media. GE, FOX, Disney, etc ALL support the GOP. There are a FEW progressive outlets, and the GOP has had a major 20 year effort funded by Coors and Heritage Foundations and billionaires like Richard Mellon Scaife, etc, to “wipe liberals off the face of this Earth…don’t debate them, use almost Stalinist tactics.” That handbook with that instruction was distributed to 350 MAIN GOP centers of influence across the US and Grover Nordquist, who under earlier Reagan-Bush administrations headed US overthrows of democratically elected officials in developing countries to replace them with US puppets, lead the charge. GET A FRICKIN CLUE. All economically vital eras, nations, states are/were progressive. All fascist states sweep the wealth from the masses into the hands of the few by tricking the people by control of the media. Here are the 14 elements of a fascist state: Dr. Lawrence Britt has examined the fascist regimes of Hitler (Germany), Mussolini (Italy), Franco (Spain), Suharto (Indonesia) and several Latin American regimes. Britt found 14 defining characteristics common to each: 1. Powerful Nationalism - Constant use of patriotic symbols. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays. 2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights -Fascist regimes approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc. 3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause - The people are rallied into a frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc. 4. Supremacy of the Military - The military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. 5. Rampant Sexism - The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes the state is represented as the ultimate guardian of the family institution. 6. Controlled Mass Media - Sometimes directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation. 7. Obsession with National Security - Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses. 8. Religion and Government are Intertwined - Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. 9. Corporate Power is Protected - The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite. 10. Labor Power is Suppressed - Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed. 11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts - Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts and letters is openly attacked. 12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment - Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws.. 13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption - Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders. 14. Fraudulent Elections - Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections. Robert Greenwald did an excellent documentary, “Outfoxed” for those who actually wish to base arguments on facts, and understand who controls America which is now a hallogram of their shaping: http://www.iwantmedia.com/people/people39.html http://www.outfoxed.org/ http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9904E3D6143BF932A25754C0A Finally Murdock’s holdings, and “Dr.” McGinnis…a thought, pretty fades, stupid is forever.
