wOw's Views on the News: Rupert Murdoch Bids $580M for Newsday

By The Staff at wowOwow.com
© AP

Rupert Murdoch bid $580 million for Newsday in hopes of adding it to his collection of New York-based newspapers. He already owns two of the nation’s top ten highest-circulation newspapers — The Wall Street Journal and the New York Post. Read about it here in The New York Times and here in Newsday. Some say Murdoch is an old-fashioned press baron, destroying America’s business paper of record; others say he is simply shoring up an ailing industry just in time. What do you think?

Princess Grace, I agree that the people have to do something, but everyone being angry at each other does not solve the problem. Nor does it help others who are looking for a different way to go it they only see everyone beating each other up with the ‘so called’ facts. You have so much info at your disposal that you seem to feel is very important, it is not always what you say, but the way you say it, that will win more to your side to ‘activate’ the world. Isn’t that what you want?

Frances…If you interpret writing fast and forcefully as anger…many would say passion—whatever. I am appalled at the near total lack of comprehension of what media consolidation means, its effects, how dangerous it is, how it has changed this nation, how our Founding Fathers tried to prevent this very thing because that is the start of tyranny, and how people are so ill informed, apathetic, and/or can’t make cause and effect connections, nor do they have a historical context to see what all of these factors have created in the past…over and again. It’s the Thomas Paines of the world that try to wake people up before it’s too late and it rarely happens. I doubt that 1 person in a hundred could describe the connection between media consolidation and $4 a gal gas, and the cost of food, or the $3 Trillion suck off from our treasury. There are activist who actually give a damn and dedicate their lives to maintaining the US Constitution etc….but as Rousseau said in his Social Contract….the money powers always trick and enslave the masses. Do you know what factors made the Greek Golden Age disappear in about 227 years? Can you say the parallels to today? Do you know what Rupert Murdock said across all his media lines (see the extensive list) in the run-up to the illegal invasion that even the Pentagon Institute has said is a total debacle…..he based his support of the illegal policy of preemptive war thusly “The world will be awash in cheap gas.” that’s it, as if that is a reason for war. What actually happened is what people who know history knew would happen…and tried to prevent. Read “War is a Racket”…a short online book by one of the most decorated marines in history. And yes get a clue. You seem like a nice woman but when you say let’s write letters….gee you really don’t get it. http://www.lexrex.com/enlightened/articles/warisaracket.htm http://www.ratical.org/ratville/CAH/warisaracket.html

Princess Grace - yes - people do understand, and people do speak out. I get a call once in a while from the Congressman for this area and it is a ‘town hall’ meeting on the phone. A huge conference call with hundreds of people on the line at once. Sometimes they go on for a couple of hours - but people - regular joes in the neighborhood, express their strong disagreement with many of same things that you do. I would not be able to tell you whether these people were repubs or dems. They do get it, they are not all stupid and don’t care, as it seems you present them. They are Americans - and get what being an American is. Like you and yours are the only ones that care? They do care, they are not activists but they do what they want to, and many of them write emails. All right, so I said letters, because for years I wrote letters, so now I write emails. If I misspeak and am not exactly on the correct word, it is because until my son gets home, part of me kind of hangs off to the side to keep me calm. I don’t have to justify to anyone the extent of my involvement in effort to change the world. You have no idea what I do and it isn’t important to me to lecture about it. It doesn’t work. People don’t want to be lectured and beat over the head with segments of facts because they don’t trust that things are not taken out of context or not edited. For me that doesn’t work. If they are like you, then they will really appreciate it or they already have the same info. The best leaders are those who lead by example. If you want to lead then learn how to do it, because the only ones that are really listening to you are people who already agree. If you want to get more issues past, you have got to convince more of the masses, and always spouting fear is not going to do it. I would say you sound more fearful than angry. Who wants to follow that. If it makes you feel like Joan of Arc, then that is another issue. You said in an earlier post that you and others worked diligently to stop the de-regulation law regarding media consolidation - then you say it didn’t work. We know why it didn’t work - there was too much money going back and forth and a lot of people wanted some, as well as a million political reasons. I have worked on projects in my city that had been turned down countless times because those seeking action kept trying to make it a moral issue. They were the Ayatollahs of morality - it is put downish so people take it personally and refuse to do anything. That is when I usually get a call, ‘do I have any ideas?’ I don’t kiss anyone’s a**, I just try to work to connect the right dots. I don’t question people’s morality, because they just end up circling their wagons and find a way to make it so you don’t get anything else done. It is self defeating and I am not responsible for their morality - it is their problem. The important thing is achieving the right outcome. My point is - if you are so passionate, and it is obvious that you care deeply about what you believe in, maybe you need better methods that work. Lead by example. Before my husband and I started our business I worked in the entertainment industry. Everyday was a day in the art of dealing with unreasonable situations and getting people impossible things. It was The Devil Wears Prada on steroids. I had to learn ‘salesmanship’. It helped me tremendously. I have not been very civically active in past few years because of my health challenges, I have had to take care of myself and get myself well - my youngest son is only 15 and I want to make sure I am around for him. I DON’T need to read any articles about war being a racket. I live it everyday. When Eisenhower addressed congress and first used the term ‘military industrial complex’ - what was originally written was ‘congressional military industrial complex’. His handlers had him take out the ‘congressional’ because they didn’t want Eisenhower to alienate congress. Here was a former general and current President, who was warning the American public of the dangers of that trio. My son shares with me his experiences in the army, and I have read countless books, so I get it.

Francis…I get it too. In fact I GOT it a LOT of years ago. Don’t know where your son is stationed but, please, tell him I support him 100% in what he is doing. Furthermore, I support the reason he is where he is. I guess that makes me a “Guns & God, “Faith Over Facts” person. I, like you have served on boards and projects in my town. We don’t always agree on the way projects should be handled, however, we respect each other’s opinion. We are all Demos and Repubs. We do not spend our time insulting each other or resort to name calling. Many I have come in contact with are devout Christians — I respect their views on their feelings just as they respect mine. Also, there are many WOMEN I know who own guns and keep them for their protection. Today, is not a safe place in many areas of some cities. Women are being molested and killed in mall parking lots in DAYLIGHT. And, these are NOT the “crime filled areas” of our cities. The malls are located in some upscale areas. As for myself — I have to think of Virginia Tech — needless murders of some wonderful young people with their young lives ahead of them. If I had been one of those young people lying on the floor with bullets flying over my head — would I have said “Gee, I’m glad no one is allowed to have a gun” or would I have said, “Gee, I hope someone owns a gun to end this massacre”. I think I know the answer. Life was simpler when I was younger. There is so much anger and name calling today that it frightens me! However, I’m not just some stupid uninformed woman living in LALA land. And, I ACTUALLY still WRITE to my Senators and Representatives — call the White House hot line and, yeah, we old people actually know how to E-Mail all of these folks. We may be old - we may have guns - we may have a great faith in our God — but, we are not stupid and we certainly are NOT UN-INFORMED. And, Francis — as I said, please inform your son that I am proud of him and would love to hug him and shake his hand.

Frances—perhaps since you know so much about war and are so diplomatic about stating your opinions you’ll want to retract that rather nasty barb about JFK esculating Vietnam….he didn’t…and it certaintly didn’t have anything to do with “French Enlightenment Values” or his being Catholic. That war began with the 1956 Geneva Convention and we were all ready there in 1960 when JFK took office, as advisors, and 82 troops had died from when eisenhower sent them in to the time of JFK’s killing. LBJ esculated the war. I happen to think you and Ginny are quite nasty…so you know…everyone has their own opinions…and as far as you being in the entertainment biz etc…..I made a 20 year career of being placed in charge of massive projects all over the US because I could deal with project teams of 100+ people etc….so whatever. Skip my posts is my advice to you.

Wow, you really are incredible. You insult people, question their intelligence, call them names and you think they are the “nasty” ones. Really, Madam, what universe do you live in?

This is a big yawn to me. The internet has changed the way people find the news, and for me that is mostly online. I read articles from papers around the world, and subscribe to many different blogs especially those that are diametrically opposed to my beliefs. When we only had 3 news channels the situation was much more serious - but now it is a flood if information. One of my favorite blogs is freelance reporter Michael Yon’s who has been embedded with the troops for 3 years. His reports are unlike anything that I can find anywhere else. He is the Ernie Pyle of our generation.

Bella, I like a lot of what Michael Yon has to say since my son is over there on this third deployment. I haven’t read him lately but I am glad you reminded me of him. How independent is he?

well, i agree with bella that the internet has mitigated the damage done by allowing the concentration of the media in too few hands. but, as we speak, in the congress, they are working on a bill that will affect NET NEUTRALITY. this is no joke. this is mega serious. this is HUGE. having the internet available to all is democracy at its best. the same old games of manipulation do NOT work because the people are involved, remember the ‘macaca’ incident? the ‘tuzla’ incident? politicians can not lie to us as they did before, corporations cannot manipulate us as they did before, media can not form our views as they did before. the corporations, politicians, media giants want control BACK, where it belongs, in their hands. for good and bad the people are involved, the spin is recognized as ‘spin’ and the media power loses its’ sway. “In February 2008, Congressman Ed Markey of Massachusetts introduced H.R. 5353, the Internet Freedom Preservation Act. This legislation would establish a national broadband policy that would allow internet users to access the legal content, applications, and services of their choosing and prohibit unreasonable favoritism of content by internet providers. The Internet Freedom and Preservation Act has been referred to the House Energy and Commerce Committee,” i found this link, a short 2 minute video, done by a small activist group formed as a result of katrina. it explains, in the simplest of terms, what is going on: http://www.youtube.com/swf/l.swf?video_id=8ymCR3DDizw&rel=1&eurl=http%3A…

We are in the situation we are in because people do not do sufficient investigation and the money powers, knowing this, name things so they SOUND as if helpful to the people, and also put riders on bills that do a lot of damage. Brief explanation of Net Neutrality: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9jHOn0EW8U Bill Moyers and other related activist links: http://www.pbs.org/moyers/moyersonamerica/net/neutrality.html http://www.google.com/help/netneutrality.html http://www.savetheinternet.com/=faq
