wOw's Views on the News: Rupert Murdoch Bids $580M for Newsday

By The Staff at wowOwow.com
© AP

Rupert Murdoch bid $580 million for Newsday in hopes of adding it to his collection of New York-based newspapers. He already owns two of the nation’s top ten highest-circulation newspapers — The Wall Street Journal and the New York Post. Read about it here in The New York Times and here in Newsday. Some say Murdoch is an old-fashioned press baron, destroying America’s business paper of record; others say he is simply shoring up an ailing industry just in time. What do you think?

murdoch ruined the post, is ruining the wsj and now he’ll ruin newsday. he shouldn’t be allowed to control so many media outlets in this market. all his media properties become trash.

Certainly if we have Clinton as the next president she won’t be settling Murdoch’s hash. He’s been backing her for some time. Why?

Tinka, it simply is not this simple. The ‘play’ has been in the making for decades. In five years and ten at the most there will be no free or impartial press as in internet, TV, newspapers, and radio. What will be is a basic fee for everything and the basic fee will get you the turn on and and commercials. For ANYTHING else you will pay and it will be manipulated to meet the multinats agenda. Deals are bein’ made as we speak behind closed doors as well as the discussions on the floor of the Congress. Within a short time we won’t be able to get a Charlie Rose or Bill Moyer or Expose’ period. And search and entertainment on the net? All managed against democracy and free flow of information and they’ll even charge for the encagement. To live on the border bet. Canada and U.S. and be able to get Canadian news is a real eye opener to how bad we have become. Actually I don’t ever remember us bein’ as good as CBC right now. Even the oldies were not as good. Study girl!

I agree with Joan. I am NOT a Murdoch admirer per se and believe his influence on American media, overall, has been a net negative. However, he is a true VISIONARY and willing to take the necessary RISKS to move toward a more integrative media zeitgeist — or, the FUTURE, when he began in the 70s. He saw the limitations in the leadership of American media, their weddedness to the status quo structure and resistence to satellite/cable/Internet business model(s) — and exploited that vulnerability. Further, during the Reagan/Bush political ascendancy, he tapped into and leveraged the then (new) climate reacting to the 60s liberal advances, and that eras’ ushering in of the very UK-newspaper-focused CELEBRITY OBSESSED CULTURE. Turning journalism in the US into infotainment, leveraging political friends to deregulate media industries and the same domestically and land a beachhead in the untapped Chinese market — similar to what he did in the American market 30 years ago. Rupert is a master strategist and has successfully gamed our tame and risk-averse media titans and politicians to create an empire. American media titans’ respect for traditional journalism as sancrosanct as the core of our Democracy left Rupert, a citizen of Australia until he became an American citizen, free to steamroll over those considerations and promote a new kind of “journalism” which has placed downward pressure on American culture and our ability to properly analyze our civic and world interests, adequately. Rupert is a GENIUS. Whether we should have and should continue to allow him to use that GENIUS against the interests of the American people, is another question altogether. What he has been able to do says more about us as Americans and our Government and revolving door Presidency/business/special interest/dynasties over the last 30 years, than it does about Rupert. Kudos to Rupert for seizing opportunities American titans could have and should have done BETTER, and to the betterment of American citizens. Now, will we end his run???

Mark Klein/McGinnis—Gee that’s quite a disproportionate rant there relative to the remark. Touchy? Hit a nerve? “Now I’m engaged in a battle with a bunch of Marxists who really need to get a life. It was fun messing with your heads, but wow, you all really need some help! DR. McGinnis” Marxists? Fun messing with your heads? Grassy Knoll. You know Klein, maybe the others are that gullible….but those are psy. reframing/demonizing ploys…..no one engaged YOU, you engaged….so you know, if the “Grassy Knoll Marxists” are distrubing you…..go back to drudge. “Fun messing with your heads” Gee, that sounds like every female pHd I know. NOT. What it sounds like is our very own home grown nut. Mark “Gotta have Craigslist erotica” Klein. A lot of people in Oakland where you practiced think you are the one who needs to get help.

You know, now I’m just mad. You are by far the biggest idiot I have ever encoutered. If you don’t stop insulting me and implying that I am this Klein character, I am going to contact someone and report this as abuse. I tried to have a reasoned exchange with you, but apparently that is not really possible given that you are an IDIOT. Half the time I can’t even decifer your stupid ramblings. The women on this site deserve better than to have pouncing on them every time they dare to contribute an opposing opinion. You need help lady, maybe Dr. Klein has an opening.

McGin-Klein—Yes do contact someone. Mark Klein isn’t on this thread because you and he are the same, or he’d be right here doing exactly what you are doing. You are a bitter woman hating GOP man here to be the fox among the pigeons can’t spot a freelance [or paid] Freeper when they see one. You are the one who needs serious help. All you posts are collected Klein and they make quite a package for the licensing board esp when comparing the writing style/ideology/tactics to ‘McGin’… You admire Murdock just fine when he is going after Demos but not if his same Coulter-Hannity-O’Reily tactic are used against you. You are a coward. “Dr.” Klein is no doctor…..he may have rec’d a license but he is no doctor….and neither are you. I was Director of Academic Ops for a university and all the chairs in my area [psy, sociology, physical therapy, gerontology, etc etc] and the 12 person search committee that selected me after an oral panel where I was the only candidate that rec’d a 1 from everyone on the panel…all had phds…..most were women….you are neither. The women on this site are grown-ups they can read what they care to. If someone posts outrageously incorrect info, ie on JFK re Vietnam and incorrectly attributes that horror story to him they will have the facts presented. “maybe Dr. Klein has an opening.’ that’s laughable on so many counts and esp after seeing “him’ on youtube….I can see why the dates come from Craigslist erotic services….

It’s about time Dr. Mc! Obviously your arguements produce quite a dissonance folks are afraid of, as if there is no right in what you say. And I’ll add to what they say also. But balance and new thinking can’t come from bad cats and impersonators. So personal they take your opinions! I tend to argue most of your points actually but I’m intelligent enough not to resort to name calling. It’s a rather disgusting discourse actually, due to the name calling. Isn’t it amazing how people think ‘playin’ with langauge with clever and stifling creativity makes them clever, and confusing it with intelligence? Distracting business. Gives women a bad name. Fortunately I don’t see thses kind in my world. Possibly we spray here.

TOCTOC—Whatever….you’re the gal who told the Chinese man from China that he doesn’t know what he’s talking about re China….because you had a job there once and hosted a family. You’re the gal who thinks the extraordinary group of successful media women who gave us this site propose ‘shallow’ questions. ‘Gives women a bad name. Fortunately I don’t see thses kind in my world. Possibly we spray here.” Save your spray…..no urban woman is going to invade your terrority. But such a noble thought.. Hmmm…where did we last of such an notion of ‘spraying’ people we don’t like. Oh that’s right. Bush (depleted uranium a WMD) and Hitler. I do declare TOC you are so high-minded.

Hmmm? What IS it about the weekend that leaves the dialogue weakened? Rhetorical question. Hey, there’s a new question on the Comments section. I like it, if I do say so myself.

Iris I don’t see anyone else providing the entire list of Murdock properties etc so there is even a CONTEXT to put the proposed sale in. OR the 14 points of fascism so it’s obvious what Murdock represents etc. If Freepers want to come they’ll be battled with facts….the world is in the shape it’s in because of Fox News propaganda on one hand and the misinformed apathetics on the other. As you will recall when Hitler Inc was on the docket at The Hague…their propagandists were there too. Fox/Rove takes its lessons directly from Joseph Goebbels, Hitler’s Minister of Information and Propaganda: “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.” “Not every item of news should be published. Rather must those who control news policies endeavor to make every item of news serve a certain purpose….It is the absolute right of the state to supervise the formation of public opinion.” Hermann Goering “Why of course the people don’t want war. Why should some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece? Naturally the common people don’t want war neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country….. Guns will make us powerful; butter will only make us fat” “The most brilliant propagandist technique will yield no success unless one fundamental principle is borne in mind constantly - it must confine itself to a few points and repeat them over and over” ““Intellectual activity is a danger to the building of character” “Think of the press as a great keyboard on which the government can play.” ““In politics stupidity is not a handicap.”-Napoleon ““Those who are too smart to engage in politics are punished by being governed by those who are dumber.”-Plato That is just what’s happened to America….. Yes let’s talk about sporting and music events…and then go get a pedicure.
