wOw's Views on the News: A Break from the Gas Tax?

Clinton and McCain are proposing a summer gas tax holiday to give consumers a break. Obama slammed this idea, saying, "This isn’t an idea designed to get you through the summer, it’s an idea designed to get them through an election." Who has the moral high ground on this one? Are greater gas taxes a good idea or a bad idea? Tell us what you think below. Read the whole story on Yahoo! News by clicking here.

We pretty much do most of our driving in the summer. A break on the price of gas looks good to me - esp if it’s paid for from oil profits.
In general I’m not for falsely cheapified goods. My income bracket means we will spend that economic stimulus check and then some, though I think it’s like giving booze to a drunk. It’s annoying as a country “we the people” make one dumb financial decision after another. It only seems like this stuff benefits us because it’s short term yummy, but it’s long term financial indigestion.

I was shredding old credit card statements over the weekend while also looking for home improvement receipts that have to be saved. I ran across a receipt for gasoline dated 1/3/03. The price was $1.549 a gallon; last Friday I filled up the tank with the same brand and same grade at the same location. The price was $3.869 a gallon. Even so, I think a summer moratorium on the gas tax is stupid. This past winter (at least I hope it’s past) has wrought major damage on the roads in the Chicago metro area. It’s the 6-county metropolitan pothole area. The construction season started before the snow stopped flying, and we just can’t afford to limit the tax funding to fix our roads. (Do smooth roads yield better gas mileage than rough ones, or is that an urban legend?)

altho many of us will not truly benefit from the gas tax vacation, there are still some folks who could use the small amount—$30-$60 dollars to pay for items critical in their specific lives politicians will always try to gather votes, but this issue is not a vote getter, rather one that tries to acknowledge those less fortunate than us…and it is a quick fix that will NOT work in the long run, but helpful so many

One pundit says the average save on this holiday gas tax break would be only $35.00. Hillary’s camp is saying more like $70.00. We’ll see what happens. She is desperately appealing to the lowest income earners. If she wins based on this I will truly shake my head. We will soon know if the Presidency can be bought for a mere $35.00. Very depressing. If this tax is for holidays, then will truckers not be with their families, and unable to take a decent business saving? I think its a meager attempt for Hillary to get more free press. I haven’t heard the word Hillary so many times in one week throughout this whole election process. Boring. Useless. Canada provides most of the oil/gas to America. Gas today was 1.40 per liter and its in our backyard. Even MORE depressing. That’s $5.37 gallon. Get used to it. Get over it. Its only going to go higher. We MUST push for new ways to design communities so we can all walk more; perfect new engines that run on water or magnetic energy regardless of the resistance of powerful oil companies; focus on solar heated homes & hot water heaters, leave the damn farmers alone to grow FOOD (you can make ethanol from dead damaged wood in our pine beetle infested forests for heaven’s sake); only allow electric cars in the city centers, find a President with some balls who won’t bend over for the lobbyists. Do any of you know that the first cars that were EVER built ran on ethanol? Gas engines were an afterthought. Gee. this sounds a bit preachy. But its all just so depressing. The world needs to see a President who thinks big. There’s a lot of healing to be done in America and on the world stage that $35 bucks won’t buy. That’s not even one prescription for a decent bottle of Valium! (little humour there to lighten up)
