Introducing ... 'Buzz Up!'

Joni Evans

Now that we have rolled out our brand-new site (and yes, we’re still working out kinks), we have just added something brand new and “webby” that I want to show off.

We’ve installed a fabulous new feature … Buzz Up! Because part of our mission at wowOwow is to find wonderful things on the web that we think you’ll be interested in, we have added Buzz Up! buttons to every story on the site.

Yahoo Buzz! allows people like you and me (and not some anonymous search engine or some 21-year-old “editor”) to “vote” on her favorite Internet stories and blogs and automatically sends your vote to Yahoo Buzz. We love it because it’s a true democracy … and it employs the wisdom of the crowd … at any age … online. The more “Buzz Up!” votes a story gets on Yahoo Buzz, the more others get a chance to find it, enjoy it and learn from it. We will be featuring more recommended tools, videos, blogs and sites as we grow.

For wowOwow, we see it as a great way to do two things. One, to make sure that women 40+ on the web have a voice in determining “what’s hot” online. And, secondly, we think it’s a great way to help bring more wonderful, like-minded readers into our fold.

So when you see a story you love on wowOwow, click the button that looks like this:

Here are a couple of stories you might find you want to “Buzz Up!” today. Thank you, and, as always, thanks for visiting us on wowOwow.com.

I think this is a wonderful idea. I really like the thought that it will bring more people to this site. Although I love everyone here I am starting to feel like it is an exclusive club. More like a wonderful coffee hour than a ‘whole community’ feel. Congrats on all the new progress -

ps - on the selfish side, I hate the thought of having to hunt for my favorite posters; Bonnie, Mugsy, Frank, Dona, etc. But this is where clicking on their name will help. I’ll just click and see what they have been saying about what subject. It’s all good!

Good Thinking Maggie………I’ve been doing that when I don’t have time to read everything. You are right it does seem like an exclusive coffee clutch……..but I think that’s what I like. I’m not sure how I’ll handle it when 2,000 people are writing everyday. No matter what………this site is fabulous. We have such interesting women (a few men) I so enjoy all of you becoming a part of my daily living.

Buzz up is pretty kewl. I saw this BUZZ UP on yahoo a few months ago. I was using it pretty steady and the came WoW. I have been addicted to WoW ever since that first day in early May. Yahoo lost me after my first week with WoW. I came resistantly over to WoW. I remember saying something dumb like ” I have nothing in common with millionaires “. I have found solid friends here on WoW. Their words of encouragement and grounded messages have been a god send. I am taking responsibility for my life and am making proactive changes. I don’t mind telling you that I was close to “checking out” a few weeks ago. I want to thank Mugsy, Lily, Linda, Peg, Maurine, Mary Lou, Em and Joni just to name a few for this. I have a mentor now and people in my life that really care about me and M. One last thing about my changing life. WoW and friends are the inspiration for my major life changes but I am the one responsible for the end result. The BUZZ UP is kewl. I like it. Thank you Ms. Evans and Co..

Liza D: You are so welcome. And thank you for telling us all this. So glad you have stayed. And no one here started out with money. Maybe a few had connections in Hollywood…not a track record for success. JONI

Great idea! I hope you can also find a way to make some of the posts (like the Fawcett cancer story) easier to find. I think that post would have generated more comments than it did. btw, did you get my HerTube and question suggestion?

Joni, Thank you for the Buzz button. Today I Buzzed a Huffingtonpost with links to the eulogy’s for Tim Russert. Have only thus far listened to Maria Shriver’s. Exceptional. Wish the great Stephen Rubin (head of Doubleday) would sign her on to write her good friend’s bio (they were also colleagues at NBC). She’s written a number of books, the greatest First Lady California ever had, and her eulogy shows why Jackie Kennedy held her niece, Maria, as an example to her two children, John and Caroline. Here’s what she said: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/06/18/maria-shriver-at-tim-russ_n_107… The other thing I Buzzed Up today was the clip of Michelle Obama’s appearance on The View…which was also on Huffington Post and not here yet, at least haven’t seen it. Thought she looked fantastic….wonderful dress (and I’ve always since childhood only like solids in clothes, not prints, but loved that print dress on her)…just an observation. I agree with the comments about domination by The Clique….I wouldn’t use the word ‘exclusive’ given the often supercilious tone (we get it, doobies, etc. And BTW, I’m definitely not up on drug culture but have heard of grandpas going to prison because they were smoking pot for their medical conditions because they can’t afford medications. I think marijuna (sp) should be legalized, however until that time just FYI law enforcement does have auto crawlers that scan the web for a host of specific words and they can locate people by IPS addresses. Just a thought.) The Clique has chased off a number of wonderful women including Renata, Taylor, JackieOh….I hope they return. Since this is a Beta site, and the Founders’ hard work in marketing activities, and in putting themselves out there is so evident, perhaps we all (including myself in this) could give some extra thought to our future contributions. For me, I’m determinedly ‘unclique’ the Lone Ranger, an individual, etc…. The Clique is no more representative of the demographic a site like this needs in order to be profitable and keep going, than it would be if I had my friends come on to form another clique that also sought to dominate the tone. Not many would enjoy that, and neither would I…I already know what my friends think about everything. Cliques belong on their own blogs…. Thought I’d also pass along this comment I heard by a performance coach, since for all of our lives we are reaching for something. He said the difference between high performance individuals; ie those able to consistently meet their goals, is that for them the things that move them ahead are “a must” rather than “a should.” Thought that was a terrific distinction.

Ms. Fluffy, I love your new name … LONDON - More than 1,000 protesters detained during anti-government riots in Tibet three months ago have not been accounted for, a human rights group said Wednesday. Amnesty International said a quarter of about 4,000 people detained by police during the riots in Tibet in March are unaccounted for. The others have been either released or placed under formal arrest. The Olympic torch will pass through the Tibetan capital, Lhasa, on Saturday, and Amnesty’s Asia-Pacific director, Sam Zarifi, said the event should draw attention to the missing and those in prison. “There is very little information coming out of Tibet, but the information we have paints a dire picture of arbitrary detentions and abuse of detainees,” he said. “With the torch relay about to enter Tibetan areas, this should be an opportunity to shine some light on the situation there.” Buddhist monks in Lhasa held demonstrations against Chinese rule in March. The protests spread across Tibet and turned violent as protesters clashed with police. Chinese authorities responded with a security clampdown and made parts of Tibet off limits to foreign tourists and most of the international media. Amnesty International said police and security forces have confiscated mobile phones and computers from monasteries, nunneries and private homes in Tibet to stop people communicating with the outside world. China says it has ruled Tibet for centuries, although many Tibetans say their homeland was essentially independent for much of that time.
