Zimbabwe's Female VP Named in Illegal Gold Deal

As if Zimbabwe’s inflation and dysfunctional government weren’t worrisome enough, the nation’s vice-president has now found herself under investigation for setting up an illegal business deal.

Authorities in Europe claim that Joyce Mujuru, Zimbabwe’s first female vice-president, worked behind the scenes to sell Congolese gold, a deal from which she’s prohibited by international sanctions. The BBC elaborates:

A company with offices in Europe, Firstar, says Mrs. Mujuru’s daughter, Nyasha del Campo, offered to sell more than three-and-a-half tons of gold from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Copies of e-mails seen by the BBC suggest the Zimbabwean vice-president was to pay the transport costs of delivering the gold to a refinery in Zurich.

Mrs. Mujuru was central to the deal, says Felix Eimer of Firstar.

"The contact is from her to the gold mine. Nyasha was just the person that was coordinating the things for third parties," he said.

Neither Nyasha nor Joyce have replied to press inquiries. Firstar, for its part, has reversed the deal.

I for one am going to give her the benefit of the doubt and assume she wouldn’t be so stupid as to attempt to COMMIT A CRIME KNOWING SHE IS THE FREAKINV.P. OF ZIMBABWE!!! Did she think none of her underhanded dealings would ever be brought to light? If she did, she is too stupid to be in a position of ruling a nation. Gee Louise!!!! :-)

And another thing…. Zimbabwe has a history of corruption in it’s politics. Any government small or large that has a history of corruption is going to be scrutinized far more than those that are run honestly and above board. A comparison for conversation sake, Illinois Governor Blago. Look at the list of governors before him that ended up in jail or ousted because of corruption charges. Did he actually think just because he came along and said he was honest, the people of Illinois, FBI and other officials would simply shrug their shoulders and ignore him “Awww he’s a good guy, no need to pay special attention to him.” Come on people! What is it with politicians whether in our country or abroad that makes them think they are above the law?

I must plead ignorance to the political climate in Zimbave but it seems that greed and political corruptions knows no geographical boundaries.  The corruptions in the poorer countries is more profound.
