What advice do you have for Michelle Obama?

Joan Cooney: Forget Your Opinions, Mrs. Obama

Michelle Obama should talk only about how the country needs her husband’s leadership to bring about change and about family life, both in a very benign noncontroversial way. And forget, FORGET, that she has any opinions of her own.

Mary Wells: Mrs. McCain Is Pretty but Michelle Obama Is Glorious

I think Michelle is gloriously 2008 and shouldn’t change. Pretty Mrs. McCain stands still on the side, slightly behind, like so many of the women.
In America’s history, wives of heads of corporations as well as wives of presidents – they barely breathe, they smile demure smiles, we are not supposed to focus on them, but we all register: nice ladies. Mrs. McCain must be cute to know – he had a wide choice. But when a woman is as still as she is you get an idea that he is the general and she marches to his tune.

Hillary’s face is active and expressive and can be dramatic and she has learned a new smile that is big and lovely and somebody new is doing her makeup this year — good for her!!! But Hillary moves like a girls’ basketball coach — back and forth, from an older era. Michelle moves from head to toe, she moves her slim athletic body as if she could jam with the best of them, clicking her fingers. The two of them, Barack and Michelle, use a podium or speech area differently than other political couples.

They move around each other, like a dance routine, and they relate to each other and even touch each other, groovy, feeling free. She makes me feel good. She isn’t scared. She has opinions. He cares about them. They have a dancing marriage that has spirit. Other good marriages in the White House, no matter how glamorous, have been still and typical of the puritanical American past. Some of the male presidents have had secret or not-so-secret affairs. But there was no happy heat that we could see – no strong communication that was obvious to us between the president and his wife. The Obamas look and act like change, like 2008, like good times. I don’t want to lose any of that.

Liz Smith Wants Michelle Obama to Just Be Adorable

Feminists will put a contract out on me and I NEVER thought I’d say this but it would be relaxing if she acted like being First Lady in the traditional sense was the first order of business. Devote herself to the arts or something like that. But stay out of politics, religion, and not offer the strong-minded opinions that have gotten her and him in so much trouble. And double on abandoning any evidence of taking revenge on anybody. Just be Mrs. Obama for THE NEXT FOUR YEARS. I have always wanted First Ladies to be so much more than they ever are, but in her case, I just want her to be adorable.

My advice to the women of wow is to change the red grey and black on photos of women. They make them look old and dowdy.

Lily That is funny. I wonder what she was like?

Wasn’t she the daughter of a Speaker of the House or some other high level Congressman. Loved her in the movie “Lifeboat” by Alfred Hitchcock. Marvelous performance as a news photographer at the start of WW II.

Dear Lily,I have an idea of what Tallulah was like, but Shirley Temple was a pretty nice person. I ran into her once on a street in San Francisco. She initiated a smile between us when she came up with one of those big beautiful smiles she was so noted for. I rented some of those movies to show my grandsun a few years ago. Gooness gravy, those were awful movies; no real storyline, just Shirley with her big smile, singing and dancing, but the country loved her. She was a very small person, maybe 4’ something.

I like the photo’s. They all get the same treatment under this democracy. How we interpret them is on us. Cindy McCain is the ‘Ice Princess’, and Michelle Obama comes across as ‘The Man Eater.’ Michelle lose the lawyer look. Seriously, why all this attention on the presumptive first ladies? This isn’t their contest to win, and it’s not on their looks or demeanor. Shouldn’t we be spending more time on the values, integrity, and depth of vision that the presumptive candidates possess?

Hi Rose I would like you to explain yourself, about the “Man Eater? I question that statement!! Michelle is a lawyer, why should she lose her, Look? Is it so presumptive of you not to know. It is not her running for office, but her husband! She has Obama’s back, do you. All so you referring to Cindy as the ice Princess, do you know her? That lady might be a wonderful person, and may not share the same demeanor as her husband. Their husbands is running for office, please keep it clear.

My hope for Mrs. Obama is that whatever the priorities that she and her husband decide on are their priorities alone and no one else’s. If she gets the chance to be in the White House—and I hope she does, it’ll be an awful four (or eight) years for her if she has to pretend to be anyone other than herself. And besides, isn’t there room for more than one strong woman in this country? Or are we allowed only one at a time?

To Mary Wells: I agree with you, 100% here. Your every word. You are right on. I was thrilled at what you wrote, as I share these sentiments. To Joan Cooney and Julia Reed: You both must have misinterpreted something that Michelle Obama said. Or maybe I am misinterpreting what you have said. I think Michelle is very smart, a great speaker, and she really makes the pitch for Barack Obama. She’s a great asset to him. “Forget that she has any opinions of her own” - - what?? I can only think that you want Michelle to keep speaking, but to “temper” her opinions maybe, because of something you misinterpreted? Is your concern to protect her? You can’t want her to be a non-entity like Mrs. McCain. Don’t worry. Barack has a team of advisors with her now. To Liz Smith: Why would you, a founder of this website, want to put Michelle Obama in an apron and a string of pearls, and have her baking pies all day long. Devote herself to the arts — Come on. I don’t know what you are talking about with the bit you wrote about “taking revenge” on anybody. What are you talking about?? I have great respect for all of you. But I must speak my mind in this open forum. Please don’t blow my perfume bottle out Mars!

NP—Thought this was funny since it was mentioned here that Michelle might not be fond of white people (seriously doubt that) a list of 100+ “Stuff White People Like” ….Obama is #8 http://stuffwhitepeoplelike.com/full-list-of-stuff-white-people-like/

Hi, To the beach, I’m with you re: Michelle Obama and white people. I read just a couple of things on the list, as I’m about to head out. I read the one on Coffee, and I read the one on Standing Still at a Concert - that was great. I’m going to print a few of these out, and take them with me. On my way to meet my mom, and go on some errand. The mother/daughter bonding thing. Great reading material for the drive. Thanks! I’m glad I checked in on this website again, and saw your post. (I wish the founders would create a notification whereby one would get a little blinking message, advising that someone had written them, you know.) Otherwise, we have to scroll down all the pages to see if someone has written them. That’s what I do for now. I like to read any new posts anyway. Have a great weekend, and thanks again.

N P, I certainly understand your reactions to all of the comments. I am thinking that perhaps the goal in the coming election is quite narrow, meaning Senator Obama need be the center of attention. Michelle Obama is a strong, intelligent individual and a captivating speaker. Maybe Liz is remembering that America learned “to hate” Senator Clinton when she was first lady because she dared to use her intelligence and passion to work for health care from a position, “to which she was not elected.” Michelle Obama has so much to offer in terms of having an impact in whatever area she chooses, but as we saw in the primaries, perception rather than reality motivates people in their voting habits. When we’re still having discussions about her clothes and attempting to identify her with an icon instead of accepting her on her own merits, we clearly are not embracing the individual. Like it or not, her wider audience will initially support her as a good Mom who is protectively guarding and guiding her much loved lttle girls through a profound adjustment. Whatever else anyone has to say about the Clintons, their most positive comments are reserved for their successful rearing of a strong, confident daughter who suffered some fairly shabby blows from the media in her adolescent years. Your perfume bottle remains in tact from this outpost. Peace and grace
