What advice do you have for Michelle Obama?

Joan Cooney: Forget Your Opinions, Mrs. Obama

Michelle Obama should talk only about how the country needs her husband’s leadership to bring about change and about family life, both in a very benign noncontroversial way. And forget, FORGET, that she has any opinions of her own.

Mary Wells: Mrs. McCain Is Pretty but Michelle Obama Is Glorious

I think Michelle is gloriously 2008 and shouldn’t change. Pretty Mrs. McCain stands still on the side, slightly behind, like so many of the women.
In America’s history, wives of heads of corporations as well as wives of presidents – they barely breathe, they smile demure smiles, we are not supposed to focus on them, but we all register: nice ladies. Mrs. McCain must be cute to know – he had a wide choice. But when a woman is as still as she is you get an idea that he is the general and she marches to his tune.

Hillary’s face is active and expressive and can be dramatic and she has learned a new smile that is big and lovely and somebody new is doing her makeup this year — good for her!!! But Hillary moves like a girls’ basketball coach — back and forth, from an older era. Michelle moves from head to toe, she moves her slim athletic body as if she could jam with the best of them, clicking her fingers. The two of them, Barack and Michelle, use a podium or speech area differently than other political couples.

They move around each other, like a dance routine, and they relate to each other and even touch each other, groovy, feeling free. She makes me feel good. She isn’t scared. She has opinions. He cares about them. They have a dancing marriage that has spirit. Other good marriages in the White House, no matter how glamorous, have been still and typical of the puritanical American past. Some of the male presidents have had secret or not-so-secret affairs. But there was no happy heat that we could see – no strong communication that was obvious to us between the president and his wife. The Obamas look and act like change, like 2008, like good times. I don’t want to lose any of that.

Liz Smith Wants Michelle Obama to Just Be Adorable

Feminists will put a contract out on me and I NEVER thought I’d say this but it would be relaxing if she acted like being First Lady in the traditional sense was the first order of business. Devote herself to the arts or something like that. But stay out of politics, religion, and not offer the strong-minded opinions that have gotten her and him in so much trouble. And double on abandoning any evidence of taking revenge on anybody. Just be Mrs. Obama for THE NEXT FOUR YEARS. I have always wanted First Ladies to be so much more than they ever are, but in her case, I just want her to be adorable.

I read all the WoW ladies’ comments when this first came up and I had to go away and think about it. I have come down on the side of Mary Wells. I find Michelle Obama delightful. And I agree with Franie Em, the woman looks so good in bright colors and the way she handles their daughters is filled with love, a guiding hand and humor. I feel the senator is a better candidate with Michelle around and I believe she will do the same for him if he is elected. I feel she grounds him. He has been open about not wanting to be filled with too much pride the way his father was and I feel she keeps him balanced. She’s educated, bright, funny, charming and thinks for herself. Isn’t this what we’ve been striving for as women? To be ourselves. I think Rocky Rocky said it well, can’t there be room for more than one strong woman? Lily of the Valley is also right; Michelle Obama is a breath of fresh air. She was smokin’ hot in that deep violet dress!

I know I’m going to sound like I’m contridicting myself but I want to make a passing comment………. When I first saw her come onto the stage at the acceptance speech I was taken aback by the sleeveless dress……. I love sleeveless dresses and want our First Lady to look modern but I was reared by the notion that you wear appropriate clothing at certain occasions. Like dress up to go to Church………..etc. So Like I said I’m contridicting myself……..I’m from the old school I guess where women didn’t wear sleeveless dresses on those occasions I would hate for her casual attitude in her attire to cause some OLD TIMERS to feel she is not being respectful of her husbands position. Although the more I think about what I just wrote the more I realize we live in a world where women now days go around almost anywhere they want half naked. So I guess It’s a matter of taste. All in all I think she is a lovely intelligent woman and an asset to her husband. I think she will make a very good First Lady.

I do understand what you are saying, Dona. I, too, was raised with definitive ideas of what women wore and when. Now I’m just grateful if a woman has covered her belly, breasts and privates! Things have changed and at least Mrs. Obama’s dresses are not too trendy, they suit her figure and look good on her. She has the arms for a sleeveless look so go for it.

Jackie Kennedy wore sleeveless dresses all the time and in other nations as pictured here in India, a modest country. She was so popular there her photo was on alters all over the country, she was called, Goddess of Power, Nehru kept her photo on the nightstand by his bed, they flooded the Ghanges with orange flowers and then she went to Pakistan and jumped horses with their military: http://www.metmuseum.org/special/Jacqueline_Kennedy/images/2.L.jpg Here sleeveless going into Church: http://www.ehistorybuff.com/history/jackiekenneyeasterphoto07.jpg And here at the first showing of the Mona Lisa outside of France because France was so ga-ga for Jackie they let their great treasure come tour the US in honor of Jackie: http://chicinparis.files.wordpress.com/2007/06/jackie_kennedy-210x315.jp… No one had more class, dignity or style than Jackie. I loved that dress Michelle wore because of the color and because it was sleeveless. She has very powerful cut arms and beautiful hands and the dress was feminine but also showed her strength. I hope she wears many more like that. She’ll bring back style like Jackie. I think she’d look terrific in silk shantung’s in brilliant, clear colors..and…she looks great in white. Youthful, fresh and very cool.

The Wall Street Journal had a long story a few months ago about how her clothes are made to look like Jackie O’s. They showed her and Jackie in the same outfit basically (to wit: the lavender sheath she wore on the cover of Newsweek). All part of the marketing plan. I also heard they got some tough campaign professionals to manage her message. He has said he has perfected a method of being non-threatening to whites (what Shelby Steele calls bargaining) and that she takes a different approach. tI will leave it at that. I am interested to watch this play out.

If her clothes reprise Jackie’s, I’m definitely for that. Classics are always welcome. Have read Shelby Steele’s books. Michelle’s comments haven’t bothered me-I understand what she means. She’s a nimble lady and will maintain equilibrium amongst all the slings and seismically shaper-shifter views. I think it’s as thrilling as watching Ocean’s Eleven.

Be aware of the North Star and the Big Dipper. “You might be soon in a white house but don’t waste your time trying to be a jackie O, be yourself, deal with it, and let’s keep admiring Jackie O “

Star They keep bringing up the Camelot thing as well. Appeal to baby boomers. JFK was the youngest man to run for president at the time as Obama is young as well. I think they keep trying to draw similarities between the two. I don’t know if that is a good idea in the long run. Kennedy and Obama are very different in policy. Kennedy was a rather conservative democrat. I think the republicans will try to discredit the phoniness of that idea. Obama has come so far he should be who he is and not a reflection of Kennedy. There is more integrity in that.

Frannie Em - I agree. Attempting to make those comparisons could prove counterproductive to the campaign.

Jackie Kennedy’s style has influenced generations of women, and not for any cynical reason. Lovely to see Michelle Obama look so good herself.

Dona, When a woman is as young and is in as great physical condition as Michelle Obama, there is nothing wrong with it. Think Jackie Kennedy, Maria Shriver, Audrey Hephurn. It’s when we get a certain age and those flabby things attach themselves to our bodies that we have to be very aware of how we look. Michelle Obama’s fashion sense is fresh, youthful and appropriate. I wish you would go to the NYTimes and read about what their fashion writer said last week. It was really spot on.

Diana, When Schwarzenegger won the recall of Grey Davis, Maria looked absolutely stunning in a sleeveless dress. The also have to campaign in summer and many places don’t have great air conditioning.

I am very impressed with Michelle Obama. She seems comfortable with herself, and truly authenic. She obviously has a sense of humor, and her style is fabulous. I have the feeling that the Senator adores her, and loves having her with him. I agree with you completely, M.L. in what you say about how she seems to ground her husband. There is a wonderful article that I read, last week, I think in the NYTimes about her fashion sense and her use of color. Of course, there are those out there that are already “swift-boating” her, but I guess that is to be expected.
