What advice do you have for Michelle Obama?

Joan Cooney: Forget Your Opinions, Mrs. Obama

Michelle Obama should talk only about how the country needs her husband’s leadership to bring about change and about family life, both in a very benign noncontroversial way. And forget, FORGET, that she has any opinions of her own.

Mary Wells: Mrs. McCain Is Pretty but Michelle Obama Is Glorious

I think Michelle is gloriously 2008 and shouldn’t change. Pretty Mrs. McCain stands still on the side, slightly behind, like so many of the women.
In America’s history, wives of heads of corporations as well as wives of presidents – they barely breathe, they smile demure smiles, we are not supposed to focus on them, but we all register: nice ladies. Mrs. McCain must be cute to know – he had a wide choice. But when a woman is as still as she is you get an idea that he is the general and she marches to his tune.

Hillary’s face is active and expressive and can be dramatic and she has learned a new smile that is big and lovely and somebody new is doing her makeup this year — good for her!!! But Hillary moves like a girls’ basketball coach — back and forth, from an older era. Michelle moves from head to toe, she moves her slim athletic body as if she could jam with the best of them, clicking her fingers. The two of them, Barack and Michelle, use a podium or speech area differently than other political couples.

They move around each other, like a dance routine, and they relate to each other and even touch each other, groovy, feeling free. She makes me feel good. She isn’t scared. She has opinions. He cares about them. They have a dancing marriage that has spirit. Other good marriages in the White House, no matter how glamorous, have been still and typical of the puritanical American past. Some of the male presidents have had secret or not-so-secret affairs. But there was no happy heat that we could see – no strong communication that was obvious to us between the president and his wife. The Obamas look and act like change, like 2008, like good times. I don’t want to lose any of that.

Liz Smith Wants Michelle Obama to Just Be Adorable

Feminists will put a contract out on me and I NEVER thought I’d say this but it would be relaxing if she acted like being First Lady in the traditional sense was the first order of business. Devote herself to the arts or something like that. But stay out of politics, religion, and not offer the strong-minded opinions that have gotten her and him in so much trouble. And double on abandoning any evidence of taking revenge on anybody. Just be Mrs. Obama for THE NEXT FOUR YEARS. I have always wanted First Ladies to be so much more than they ever are, but in her case, I just want her to be adorable.

Hi Frank, There are some participants in this conversation that are conservatives, and I don’t believe they’re sewer denizens of the right wing. I hope they stay, because a conversation between people who all agree isn’t all that stimulating, in my opinion. I appreciate your opinions, but hope we can have continuing discourse without name calling.

Kitty, I don’t think Frank was referring to the conservatives on this site. The sewer denizens live elsewhere and can be heard live on TV and radio spewing their muddy stuff. Who knows? They may even live next door.

Then perhaps Frank should be more definitive. Gosh, my feelings were almost hurt.

Hi Bonnie! I was thinking of you when I made that comment, and am glad you decided to stick around.

I get the idea without the words (what is the point, you didn’t hit your thumb with a hammer). No one should say anything about her—even her hubs said not to, or else. Well, I can do what I please. She has already said things that bear a little exploration, and although I am not that interested in her, I might get on that subject someday.

By thw way, I am not a conservative. I have been a Dem for 45 years. I just don’t like Obama and will not vote for him. At least I am not a sewer denizen, though that is an interesting term.

I am sure that Frank wasn’t referring to anyone here but to the Fox News kind of thing, ie terming the ‘fist bump’ a ‘terrorist’ fist bump. The woman who did that lost her show.

You bet you aren’t a sewer denizen! You are our lovely Star who shines brightly, giving us good light from time to time. I’m sorry you don’t like Obama, but heck, I just hope you’ll change your mind and if you don’t, you don’t. So be it.

Hi Star, I wasn’t referring to you. I was referring to someone else who pondered whether she should participate on this site even though she was a conservative person who was voting for McCain. By the way, Star, I enjoy your posts. You’re feisty and funny - two of my favorite qualities!

Star, No worry !You are not the only one who is not going to vote for Obama! One way to see what your “enemy” says is to watch Fox News, too much on the right, too much on the left, it’s all the same game to me!

What is it about Obama that you do not like, his color? Or the fact he might be leader of this country soon? I do not know what a Sewer denizen is, but I would like to know, never heard of it before, but I’m the same as Obama, You must remember we did not get here alone. A change is what we need.

Are you serious? You think it’s his color? How about his deviousness, his two-facedness. He introduced race—did you see the part in his “race speech” about how the blood of white slaveowners runs in his precious daughters veins (from his wife’s side, he added)? That wasn’t widely soundbited… He sniped at Hillary or condescended to her at every turn—always well cloaked of course. His adherents are getting pretty infamous on blogs for swamping them with talking pts from his campaign. All his money is not from small donors. He has lobbyists on his staff (Axelrod for one). He is up to something and I wonder who is backing him—besides these over the moon youngsters. Yes, we need things changed—we need the Bush hideousness undone…but change to what? For me—not this guy!

Frank: I don’t want to drag Hillary out from under the bus, but what do you think she put up with for all these months? If Michelle is half the person Hillary is (and I think she is), she should be able to take and keep on smiling. I’m sure you know the Obama bloggers held Hillary over the coals long after she was done. And it happened right here. I hate to see another woman go through that nonsense, but then again….
