I did airborne-traffic reporting for some of Metro Networks’ client radio stations in Grand Rapids in 1996-‘97 from a Cessna-210. Being 2,000 feet up in the air while reporting live on the air was exhilirating. Did a lot of breaking news from up there on non-traffic-related matters, such as fires, train wrecks, flooding, etc. I’ve also been a studio anchor and street reporter, and that’s cool, too.
The best job I ever had was in Tahoe City, California, where I was an elementary teacher for ten years in 1968-78…fabulous years in a glorious place with energetic and inspiring people, and a great time for creativity and enthusiasm in education…lots of in-service courses through UC Davis, and much more. A home overlooking the beautiful jewel of the Sierras, and a great job, wow. The best.
The best job I’ve ever had? A few. I enjoyed being an adult probation officer, a waitress, a librarian in a public library…. I changed jobs a lot. I liked owning and operating my small independent bookstore for several years, and my small private practice in mental health counseling. I’ve always loved writing, editing and translating, and teaching and learning about natural medicine and nutrition. Those have been mostly on-and-off contract work. Now I enjoy my freedom.
My resume isn’t that long to begin with. Officially, my current job now is my very first career. I’m an IT person for my company; some of my jobs include doing maintenance to company’s internal applications, databases, and networks, to something as small as doing desktop supports and installation.
For my first job it’s not so bad actually. I have a nice supportive boss even though he is overly busy and unavailable most of the time (at least he reads emails!). The pay may be so-so, since it’s an entry level job. The fact that I’m the only female in the tech department in the company history kinda bothers me however…… people put me in the “spotlights” all the time. Overall, it’s a great experience-building opportunity :)
