What are the biggest changes, positive or negative, your body has been through in the last ten years?

Candice Bergen's Freakish Body Part

Easy. For starters, 30 pounds.

Twenty-five at least. I took off ten in the last month or two but am still Blimpola. Then various chronic things. Daily medication. But my back is better since I work much less. My feet, however, are bigger … by half a size in the last ten years.

And two whole sizes bigger over the last 40 years. Which seems a tad freakish to me.

Liz Smith: The Pros and Cons of Aging

NEGATIVE: Well, this old body which remained 118 pounds for thousands of years, suddenly, after about age 60 grew to be a bit fluffy around the middle. And though I try, I don’t seem to get rid of that. My belt size went astronomical. I have minor but irritating arthritis and there is no cartilage left in my right knee, but I refuse to give in to it. I keep on dancing and climbing stairs and trying to work around it and to ignore it.

POSITIVE: Well, they say the legs are the last thing to go and I admittedly still have those and they don’t look too bad. But my arms aren’t in sync, so I usually wear long sleeves which my friend Mary Tyler Moore did not do at the recent Emmys, much to observant dismay. I would say I look better now than when I was much younger, except for my wrinkles. Becoming a "natural blonde" and learning a little bit about how to do my own makeup, after years of observing how the TV artists do it, has helped me a lot.

My health in general is getting worse. Especially my back and legs. I can’t walk without assistance now. Even with Morphine as my pain killer I’m still in a lot of pain. I am way way overweight. I’ve even had stomach staple surgery to try to correct that problem but it didn’t work. I’ve Yo Yo dieted for years…………..after a while the metabolism is totally shot. My brain is set on STORE FAT…..even though I keep my intake of calories to just a little over 1,000 a day I don’t lose weight. Not being able to exercise of walk ………it’s a losing battle. A few years ago I decided nothing was going to work so now I just accept who and what I am…………..I buy great clothes and look the best I can. I’m so grateful I was blessed with a great sense of humor………….it gets you through a lot of things in life.

Dona, Always nice to see your pretty smiling face. Am so sorry you are in pain still, was hoping your back would get better. After the four months with shattered foot/cast [which is mild in comparison and I thought it was a lot] am so symphathetic to mobility constraints…effects everything. I can picture you in quietly classy attire…you just seem the type. Hope at least you are able to still swim. You share Jackie Kennedy’s philosophy, “Do the best you can and then forget about it.’ My best friend’s large dog pulled her over onto the large rocks on the beach in front of her home. She hit her head and was knocked out, neighbors saw her and called and ambulance. That was a few months ago. Her speech is back but she needs 24 hr attendants in her home and had to move into a downstairs guest room, when her room upstairs is beautiful and larger than most city apartments. High ceilings, frply, huge sitting area, balcony over beach, long hall back to enormous walk-in closets, dressing room, bathrom etc. A European woman built the house and feel sorry for my friend who is missing her independance and also know how that is her ‘dream’ room. She said the same as you, she fought the new situation for awhile and decided this is a new stage of life and she’s going with the flow. She sounded great, which was a relief. Be good to yourself.

Thanks Suzanne, I’m so glad I have this web site to pass a lot of my hours. My deepest sympathy to your friend. My father used to say………”.Do what you want to do while your young and able You never know when life will change and you are no longer able. But the thing that changes the most is you lose your desire.” My husband I and I traveled a lot and truly enjoyed our life together. After he died my sister and I took great trips for the first five years. Now it’s just so difficult……….plus my sister’s son is dying of an incurable cancer…My Youngest son who just got married in April had a terrible scar Sunday night. My daughter in law started complaining about terrible pain in her abdomen………..we rushed her to the hospital. They did surgery after being checked out. They weren’t sure what they would find. She was filled with infection. Thank God we got her there quickly………..if it had gone untreated she would have died in a couple of days. They are doing tests for cancer but don’t think it is…………..I pray not. I’ve had enough suffering and pain for a life time. I have a 19 year old granddaughter who is dying. Life can really be tough. No matter what happens I’m determined to try to stay as positive as possible. Again……….Thanks for your kind words.

Dona, I’m sending warm, positive energy to you each morning to help alieve your pain. Chronic pain can be so wearing, but in the midst of that, you bring so much joy to all of us at wOw. And continued prayers for the recovery of your daughter-in-law and God’s mercy on your granddaughter. ‘Tis said God does not give us more than we can handle, “but sometimes we wish He did not trust us too much.” God’s blessings on you, Sweet Dona. Peace and grace

Dona To read your words about your whole family is heart wrenching. I lost 7 family member in 7 years. After my mother died the diagnosis of Breast cancer came along and then so much treatment, another diagnosis of a local re-occurrence and just after my son left for the army. It seemed like there was always ‘the other shoe dropping’. I felt like a deer in the headlights. There is no relief from it, we just have to keep at it. I am sorry for your pain. Those losses are a heavy burden to carry, they weigh too much on the soul. Have you done any regression on it? Poor dear. I am sorry this is happening to you. Know that we care about you and want you to be better. I am sending you love over the airwaves.

Dona…you know I have tried diets that didnt work and I found a book called “eating right for your blood type”…it will list all the foods that are good and bad for your specific blood type…like i am B+ and I was shocked to read that wheat and peanuts slows my blood flow down where almost every diet says eat tons of wheat bread, whole wheat pasta…its not good for my blood type. Check that out…it has helped me.

Dona, You are truly an inspiration for us all. I’ve heard every word that you have said and it has touched me to my core. I have never really talked with you because somehow I can’t find the words that are needed to express my feelings. You rock…and you are blessed. I am so glad that your life has included some really great parts as well.

OK, this movie just gets better and better. The National Enquirer, which is now a reliable source after scooping the Edwards affair, and why not since we’ve lived in upside-down world for 8-years…..is reporting that Palin had an affair….names, photos, sworn statements, polygraph. Why am I not surprised, but never-the-less ROTFLMAO, to quote Frank. Here’s the link: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/09/25/brad-hanson-sarah-palins_n_1293… Oh, and all the GOP is ticked off as can be and saying that McSame flew in for photo op, wasn’t wanted, wasn’t needed, and created chaos in the bailout process—just grandstanding for politics—and has his partymates steaming. His proposed changes were for LESS regulations and MORE corporate tax breaks. And here’s a hilarious film trailer for hockey mom goes to WDC as VP and becomes prez with the old guy kicks. http://www.collegehumor.com/video:1831461 Plus Carl Bernstein of WaPo/Watergate fame followed McCain around on the campaign trail and reports that Palin was a political pick and the worst thing possible for the country. Thanks for that 411. Friday should be plenty interesting.

The affair is an interesting twist; I guess Palin is presidential after all. Miss Frank. I hope he is OK. I could understand him going away for a while; we all do. But for his name to switch to black and his face to disappear and then for him to disappear was too much mystery for me. Maybe he is working on the bailout?

Dona, As they say, we’re closest to the gods when we laugh. Guess it’s time to rent funny movies. Your courage and laughter and pretty places are probably the best Rx. Sending you oceans of good thoughts.

Suzanne, I read Huffington on ‘Palin Affair’. Easily explained: Brad Hanson looks like Todd Palin and poor Governor Palin misplaced her glasses. Purely mistaken identity. Peace and grace

First off my regards always to you, Dona, who,as I’ve told you before, is courage personified! Isn’t it interesting how we segue from arthritis, fat feet, tubby tummies to Sarah Palin. All those maladies puts us in mind of something even more problematic. Check out her chit chat with Couric on Huff Post re: her readiness for dealing with foreign policy. Back to aging–positive and negative: Positive: Have stayed the same weight for as long as I can remember, but shape has shifted some. I figure it’s genetics because I have never been on a diet and have always eaten well. I no longer have the severe headaches I had years ago––hormonal? Emotional? Who knows. Negative: Hips and right knee sometimes give me twinges, but nothing serious yet. Abundant hair, long eyelashes thinning. And so it goes~~~~
