What are the biggest changes, positive or negative, your body has been through in the last ten years?

Candice Bergen's Freakish Body Part

Easy. For starters, 30 pounds.

Twenty-five at least. I took off ten in the last month or two but am still Blimpola. Then various chronic things. Daily medication. But my back is better since I work much less. My feet, however, are bigger … by half a size in the last ten years.

And two whole sizes bigger over the last 40 years. Which seems a tad freakish to me.

Liz Smith: The Pros and Cons of Aging

NEGATIVE: Well, this old body which remained 118 pounds for thousands of years, suddenly, after about age 60 grew to be a bit fluffy around the middle. And though I try, I don’t seem to get rid of that. My belt size went astronomical. I have minor but irritating arthritis and there is no cartilage left in my right knee, but I refuse to give in to it. I keep on dancing and climbing stairs and trying to work around it and to ignore it.

POSITIVE: Well, they say the legs are the last thing to go and I admittedly still have those and they don’t look too bad. But my arms aren’t in sync, so I usually wear long sleeves which my friend Mary Tyler Moore did not do at the recent Emmys, much to observant dismay. I would say I look better now than when I was much younger, except for my wrinkles. Becoming a "natural blonde" and learning a little bit about how to do my own makeup, after years of observing how the TV artists do it, has helped me a lot.

At 75, I have arthritis in the knees and pain in the arch of one foot, so I see chiropracter monthly, workout with a trainer x3 a week lifting weights, and am trying Euflexxa injections in the arthritic knees before giving in to replacements. It’s a struggle that I’d prefer not to think about. I’ve always been physically active, but my work requires 8 - 10 hours of sitting every day. Important rules of thumb: keep moving, when you hurt, move! avoid empty carbs, sugar and dairy. Laugh a lot and invest in a good haircut.

I’m 73, have arthritis but nothing else wrong in the health department. At 5’7” I weighed around 125-128 for most of my life until about 5 years ago when I started to inch up. I didn’t change my eating habit so it must be slow down of metabolism. I now weigh between 143-146 depending on the day. Have lots of wonderful clothes in my closet that I can’t get zipped. I work out 4-5 times a week at the gym which greatly helps my arthritis pain. I’m in a chiropractic trial at a chiropractic college to see if the treatments relieve the pain in my hip. It has help but not taken away all the pain. The arthritis in my hip is not advanced enough to have replacement surgery. When I was 68 my BF and I purchased a sailboat, he taught me to sail, and we go sailing as often as we can. He also has taught me to play golf. We go tent camping… my friends think I’m nuts. Their idea of going camping is a luxury hotel. My life is very full of activities. Today I’m weeding in my back yard and pruning the overgrown bushes. I could go on and on but need to get back to my weeding.

The question was, physical changes in the last 10 years, that would be my 70’s,happy wonderful time, nothing major. Hair loss, underarm, arms and legs, and MUCH shorter eyelashes. Hyperhydrosis of the cranium (no medical answer for this, but we are working on it). Still a big head of hair, but wavey and curley rather than straight. Hearing aide. Flab and weight gain, walking limit one hour. Arthritis. One bad knee. Dark circles under the eyes. 2 hammertoes w/ 2 more on the way.Wrinkles, shorter feet and lost 2 inches in height. But the very worst is I’m loosing my spelling and if I pause to look it up I loose my thought. Life is STILL very, VERY good.Do everything I’ve always done. Drive, dinner out, movies entertain and at last have time to read more. My husband and I do our own housework rather than use the gym. I haven’t done that in years and even bought an ironing board for pillow cases. Seventies…piece of cake!

Last ten years has me wondering ‘what more’ . It’s true Candice your feet get bigger but I think of it as a blessing when I an older and become unstable and the big one comes I’ll be study on my feet. Gads Liz have the no cartridge in the left knee thing too, and it has it’s moments, your walking along fine in a book store looking towards the top shelf were some of the large Art books of Carl Aldana then oops I am face to face with Milica Zivkovic African watercolorist in one remarkable swoosh great artist A to Z because of a knee… The only youthful glow I am have is acne …. yes… I never had it until in my mid forties it’s a curse. I am suppose to spending millions of dollars on turning back the hands time creams and masks and now all I buy is the mask. In ten more years I hope it’s gone, I don’t want some mortician getting me ready for the viewing with Clearalsil.
