I found this by accident going through my posts. If it is to me—the sadistice pathological boss did not win. I refused to be a victim, settled in a David and Goliath lawsuit—I was David. Of course I called my lawyer when I got the letter. Even though we couldn’t legally prove it was from him, I benefited financially. My health was not ruined pschologically; but I have four chronic autoimmune diseases and I was heading over the edge before this started. And the next day I remembered his name. This man is now in jail for assaulting a female worker-the state is paying his way. I am now in the process of helping a dear friend going through something similar.
I am the WOMAN! Very liberating.
When I was much, much younger, I often worked for Nordstrom during their big sales. A certain woman, in her late 20’s, was a buyer for several of the stores, and had been there for years. She was a tyrant, and terrorized all of us. One day I made the mistake of asking her to help me size a Gucci watch by taking out some of the links, while the customer waited. She broke the ($900) watch and threw it into the return box. Then another, then another, 5 watches in total went into the return box, all the while demeaning me and berating me in front of the customer.
I wrote up in the entire incident in a three page report, and sent it to the Store manager, and cc’d: it all the way up the corporate ladder to people at various levels and to the CEO. Everyone was reading off the same page.
The store manager called me in, and said he’d never read anything like that. She had been called in, and told, one more incident and she was out AND she owed me an apology. She apologize - I graciously accepted. She said she had no idea her behavior was so bad. (heh.) From that point on she behaved in a professional way toward everyone whenever she was around the department.
I still feel so good about having slayed this dragon for my entire department who had been abused by her over the years.
My boss is me. Short meetings.
Before that, I had a string of smartypants, tough, loyal women, who had enough self confidence to encourage me to go farther than they. They’re all my dear friends, now, but I moved away and don’t have the pleasure of their company as often.
Sometimes you women provide the intellectual stimulation and camaradarie they did.
I appreciate that.
Kitty,
If you don’t have your own financial blog, you should start one, and gear it towards women.
I love your explanations. People with no financial background or who find the subject daunting would love your site. And, unlike Dr. Mark, you would give responsible financial advice.
Thanks, Carol. It’s fun to chat with women like you who are so bright, and ask such profound questions. I’ve always thought women needed to put a priority on managing their money - since we live longer and make less. The big challenge has always been, as a gross generality, their tendency to take care of everyone else first. I’ve never been able to figure out how to address that. Maybe the Change the World section can help with this.
kitty, if you go to lily of the valley’s blogspot http://lilyinthewoods.blogspot.com/ you will be forced to go to the blogspot folks, who will help you create your own blog, if you want. i would read it and maybe comment. i think you make economics accessible to us.
I am the boss and my dog is my secretary. He is pitiful at answering the phone but great at answering the door. His filing sucks no matter how many times I sing the ABC song to him. I’d fire him but he is just too cute! The good thing is he works for food.
Carol- Thank you! That is quite a compliment! Maybe, if I’m lucky, Ellen will read your post and call me up and bring me on her staff…LOL! In my brightest dreams! I did stand-up once in Boulder in front of 200 people. It was so scary and soooo much fun all at the same time.
Frannie- Gorilla Hugs!
My boss is the age of my daughter and she thinks she needs to take care of me. I absolutely adore her and vice versa.
If one wants or has to work at 76 then this is the best of all worlds.
Liza- I don’t know if I can describe that but I will try.
Imagine a boss (me) embraced in an art piece…so engulfed in the tide. Metaphorically shaking my hand in front of my face to see the film in between my fingers. One would say it’s total focus and another might say it’s total chaos.
My boss is a young man almost half my age, to his credit he respects my position.I’ve been here ten years, he has been here one and half years. He is a bit immature and unpredicable at times but he is very entertaining and keeps us laughing sometimes to the point of tears ! I really can’t complain. I have a lot of imput with him, while we don’t always see eye to eye we get along very well. He is always listens to my two cents ! I feel sorry for those of you that have bad, mean, awful bosses !
