In this digital age, how are you keeping photographs?

Why Joan Ganz Cooney Stopped Snapping Photographs

I keep only the old standard kind, in albums and in frames. I miss the old way and the excitement of getting the developed pictures from the pharmacy and choosing the best for enlargement and then framing them. And operating pre-digital cameras. I just couldn’t adapt to the new technology so I don’t take pictures anymore.

Where Are Joan Juliet Buck's Old Photographs?

The prints — my parent’s stash from the ’40s, ’50s and ’60s, mine from the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s — in boxes. Which are, alas, in storage, so that when Allegra Huston needed pictures of herself in Billings, MT, summer of ‘75, for her memoir, Love Child, I couldn’t come through. Everything digital is on discs which are, as they say, somewhere.

Liz Smith: 'Digital Schmidital'

I throw them all in boxes. Occasionally in my office we try to separate them under categories or names or times. When I wrote my memoir, Natural Blonde, I had so many photos of me with famous people that we used them as endpapers. But as for keeping them useful, I say, "Digital schmidital!" If I can’t hold it in my own two hands, I’m not interested in keeping it.

Candice Bergen Needs a Photo Organizer

In this digital age, I am keeping the ones I haven’t already lost in cardboard boxes in LA and NY. Some are with photo agencies but none are properly stored and filed.

I have about 50 photo albums……….full! Then I also have shoe boxes full………… Once the digital era arrived I quit taking photo’s……….. Now I let my children and grandchildren be the family photograhers. I’ve been thinking about all the albums and wonder how to share them. I gave the first album away this week to one of my granddaughters on her 23rd birthday. (as an extra gift) It was an album of her brother’s baby photo’s, her parents. Me and my husband and her great grandparents. Her brother died when she was 14 years old. (he was 16) She still grieves for him so much. I thought she would enjoy having the album more than anyone else. I was right. She loved getting photo’s. It also gave us a chance to talk about him. Now I think I will go through all my old albums and make separate ones for each family member. I also might decide to be lazy and just buy a very pretty box and fill it up with photo’s………..if they want to make albums they can. Either way I think they will enjoy having all their baby photo’s, childhood and old school pictures.. I’ve scanned some of my old photo’s and downloaded them onto my computer……….as I did for my Avatar.

I forgot to mention I also have several hundred video films. Also old 8 mm from my childhood. I think the first ones were filmed by my father in 1939. I love seeing all of those. I truly enjoy the ones of my children when they were babies……..

I store my digital photos on CDs, and then make contact sheets (thumbnail views of each photo on the disk) for each CD and then put the contact sheets in a binder. On each CD I put a number which corresponds to the number I put on the contact sheet. It works well. I now have three binders full of contact sheets. When I get the time, I scan old photos and do the same. I have tons of real scrapbooks, but the nice thing with digital is that you can print the ones you really want to add to your paper scrapbooks.

Hi Judy, You took the words right out of my mouth! I do the exact same thing you do and mainly for omitting the bulk while still maintaining the capacity for thousands upon thousands of pictures. Everything is saved to disc and back up files. Then, I have some one my i-pod so I can carry my family with me where ever I go. When traveling overseas, I take my chip from my digital camers into a local camera and print shop and have them put them onto disc’s and my chip card is reloaded and I’m ready to go again. Have also had all my videos put on disc’s. The most time consuming, I’ll agree is the labeling of all. I too, do the photo albums and scraping for all my travel photo’s that are also in albums along with those albums that I have made as gifts for each of my children and they have copies of the lives, growing up on disc’s as well. Thank God for the home photo lab as well. Pictures are so vital they are living memories of times past and it’s just such a miracle to be able to step back and time to actually see the past. :)

I just don’t take photos any more. Yes, we own a digital camera, and I have the nifty little video camera that was hot last holiday season, but I’ve never used it. Once in a while I will snap a photo with my phone and send it on to some one, but seldom. I miss the old Kodak Instamatic days! (Oy! I’m dating myself!)

EKA…Hugh Jackman is just plain YUMMIE! I really truly believe my mouth waters when I see him…even if its just a picture of him but the one imagine that burns in my mind is the picture of Brad Pitt from his movie Legends of the Fall, with his long hair. There is nothing ugly about that man!

Thanks for the link C, I had not watched it last night. You just made my day because Anderson Cooper is indeed my (I’ll never have him but I wish I could) crush and Michael Phelps has the BEST body of any young man I have ever seen! Total eye candy…..So you have given me a double whammy! Yum!

I probably shouldn’t tell you the rumors about Anderson Cooper ….Who I really like by the way, I don’t think girls do it for him. That could be totally wrong, just rumors.

It would be just my luck to develop a crush on a Gay guy! :-) In keeping with my “research and confirm everything before responding” method of doing things….I quickly researched this one and you may be right Eka. I have said it before in posts on this site, no heterosexual person I know of ever says ” I prefer not to discuss my sexuality or sexual preference” they just don’t. They may say “I’m straight, but my dating life is off base for conversation…..” or something like that. Anderson it appears has made a habit of saying he doesn’t discuss his sexuality. Red flag! Okay this really tears it. If I find out that George Clooney (my other crush that I know I’ll never have) is outed as Gay, I don’t know what I’m going to do?
