We have a weekend house and that is my ideal one-day, two-day, three-day stay-near-home vacation.

Liz Smith Plays in Joan Cooney's Backyard

I’d like to go up to the new Fifth Avenue aerie of Joan Ganz Cooney and Pete Peterson and sit out on their terrace, which is just up from a building that was set back by Nelson Rockefeller so they can see all down Fifth and all of Central Park. I could just talk to one or both of these wonderful human beings and feel like I’d been on a vacation. Come to think of it, I once went on a vacation with them on a boat through the Greek islands. I think now all three of us would enjoy the iced tea on their terrace even more! We never get finished talking.

Peggy Sue, Lake Geneva is gorgeous. I went there for my first honeymoon. An interesting site I stumbled across www.pioneerwoman.com you might enjoy. This woman is delightful- daughter of a MD, city bred lawyer who married a “Marlboro Man” and ended up living on a ranch out west with 4 kids. She’s fun to read and so well written. She calls her husband “manager of her remote control”. The pictures of her horses - wild mustangs - are breath taking.

Kay Sara I love that website. Thank you for the introduction to it. Reminds me of when my dad cut the alfalfa and my brothers hauled it all in. The photos are great. I am sure that is a huge ranch, but I miss the ranch of my girlhood. It is such a great way to grow up. I wanted to get on a flight and go pitch in.

WL quand comptez-vous quitter pour la France?” Uncertain because of Dad…. “YOU ARE TOO MUCH FUN” That’s today BCG…tomorrow you’ll be smacking me down—that’s ok, I can take it. You remind me of my sister Mimi!

Suzanne, You have upset allot of people …. I don’t understand it. It feels ugly don’t it? It is my understanding that you have been suffering with your foot and other health issues. We all have issues …. I wish we could be nice to one another all the time …. you make that hard. I also make that hard … I say some stupid stuff and then I wonder why no one is talking to me that day. I am my own worst enemy. I don’t care for bullies and I ain’t gonna’ let you do it without calling you out. How about we let this go now …. start over. Mostly, I think you are so smart and I do learn from you …. I just wish I could learn from without getting upset. I’m sorry about your Dad … I really am. It would seem that your family means everything to you and that is good … are a good one to take care of him and stay close to him during these difficult times.

In less than an hour, I can be at our family’s lake house on a private lake. I can kayak, have cook outs for my friends, or, my personal favorite…just sitting on the deck doing needlepoint…with a glass of vino, of course! I will be there all of next week, and I can’t wait!

I live in a beach/tourist town on the panhandle of Florida, which is growing at a rapid rate. A one-day stay-near home vacation for me would be to simply get a hotel room on the beach (or stay at a friend’s timeshare condo). With new restaurants, resorts, attractions, and the steady influx and outflow of tourists, the local scenery changes almost daily—each month when I look around me, it’s almost like being in a different town.

James, “Wishagain” Good one- I had never heard that for Michigan before. Time to go sit out on the deck and have a cup of morning joe on this perfect Sunday morning.

There’s nothing too close that would qualify as an exciting vacation. I like the beach along Lake Michigan in South Haven, Michigan. I also like Mackinac Island, but it’s a six-hour drive from Bland Rapids. One could also take the Lake Express ferry across Lake Michigan to Milwaukee. Or the 2-1/2 drive to Chicago.
