Marjorie — “McCain doesn’t need our money, he’s doing fine on his own.”
Are you saying that McCain is not soliciting campaign funds??? For one thing, McCain —unlike Obama — agreed to accept federal funds for his campaign. That is not exactly financing his campaign “on his own.” Also, he is definitely soliciting additional funds—he attended a fundraiser in Chicago last week that raised $4-$5 million. So if McCain does not need our money, as you claim, he is apparently stockpiling a stash for a cushy post-election retirement!
Linda,
Ran into this report while traveling around the web this morning:
Sept. 15 (Bloomberg) — John McCain and the Republican National Committee entered the two-month general election campaign with twice as much money to spend as Democratic nominee Barack Obama.
McCain had about $200 million at the close of the Republican National Convention on Sept. 4, including $84.1 million in federal funds, $76 million in the Republican Party bank account, plus money left over from the primary campaign. Obama had about $95 million, with $77 million in his campaign account and $17.5 million from the Democratic National Committee.
“McCain will have more than enough communication dollars to display his message,” said Republican consultant Eddie Mahe.
Since Obama is not taking taxpayer funds for the general election, he can continue to raise money privately; in August, he brought in a record $66 million. McCain can no longer raise money for his campaign, except to cover some legal and accounting costs. …
Thanks, Marjorie. This is the type of factual information that is really useful to the debate on this site. Much appreciated.
Go Cubs!

I believe any unused money McCain raises stays with the Republican Party.

In the last year, I’ve given to UNICEF, the DNC, Hillary, Obama … and now I’m forking it over to the Dem candidate for Congress in my district. Remember, we have 3 branches of government. Should the worst happen with the Administrative Branch, we still may have a prayer if we can get more Dems into the Legislative Branch. Don’t forget to give locally!
I didn’t because every candidate I have ever contributed to or worked for has lost. I don’t want to jinx this one. It’s too important.
I have contributed to Obama several times. I will contribute one more time. I have also contributed to congressional candidates who will advance the democratic platform — or should I say the platform of democracy. I have contributed to Al Franken’s campaign even though he is not in my district.
And if anyone has any extra dough, Dan Seals is running a very tight race in Illinois against Bush republican Mark Kirk. Kirk’s ads are all over the TV, & Seals can’t compete with his war chest.
I have never contributed to a political campaign before this year..and I have made a number of (small) contributions to Obama.
Why? Because I have never before felt it was as important as I feel it is now.
Like James my usual contributions ran along the St Jude/Make a wIsh line
also vets groups like DAV or the USO
And this week I made phone calls for Obama..another first
Yes, to Barak Obama’s campaign. Bought both his books to find out more about him. Impressed, I wanted to help his cause. This was my first political contribution.
On 9/11 both candidates spoke of service to one’s country. Then I read this story: “Budget-crunched Peace Corps cuts volunteer positions.”

Sort of a perverse symmetry, don’t you think?
I have given several small donations to Sen. Obama, and my fellow bloggers here have inspired me to make another donation today.
Go Cubs!
I donated a very small amount to Obama as I am on disability.
But I have changed my mind and think I am going to vote for Mc Cain now.
Obamas whole persona seems to have shifted and I don’t like what I am hearing or seeing………….
I havent and would like to but I cant afford it my contributions goes to my household(food, gas and utilities) but I will be voting for Obama/Biden.
