Why is the new Batman movie, 'The Dark Knight,' breaking records at the box office?

Whoopi Goldberg: Heath Ledger's Death Made Us Want to See 'The Dark Knight'

It’s breaking records because we were told about a great performance done by an actor who is gone too soon. And everybody wants to be able to say, "I saw that performance on a big screen and it was … your quote here." And for those of us who just love Batman, well, we just love Batman.

Julia Reed: Christian Bale? Sexy as Hell ... Katie Holmes? Silly

Because Heath Ledger is scarily brilliant, just so, so amazingly good. Because Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman give their usual flawless performances. Because Christian Bale is sexy as hell and Aaron Eckhart ain’t bad either. Because lovely Maggie Gyllenhaal is so much more compelling than silly Katie Holmes was in the same role. And then there is the Batmobile.

I have to say that I thought Tim Burton’s version with Michael Keaton was far and away the best of the Batman movies. But I was thrilled to see this because there is so little else in the theaters this summer worth seeing.

The Unexpected Publicity for 'The Dark Knight'

It is a Batman movie that is different, darker, cooler and that is alluring. It has had very good advertising and PR. One of the actors who gives a rave performance died — we liked him, we want to see him again doing so well in his last film.

How 'The Dark Knight' Became a Megahit

I haven’t seen it but I gather from talking to those who have that it is a beautifully produced film and that Heath Ledger is amazing. Add to that the Batman franchise and you get a megahit.

What's Not to Like About Batman?

Well, everybody wants to see Heath Ledger again and get a chance to say good-bye. And this is a much darker, more devastating movie about this comic strip hero, Batman, so I guess it suits the times. I have loved all the Batmen in all their incarnations. What’s not to like?

Heath Ledger was a great performer as the Joker. In the other Batman movies the Joker was….to pretend with their flawless make-up, and the other Jokers were not as underhanded and brilliant as Ledger’s Batman was. The way Ledger walked, talked, and in all his movements, he was alluring. In some ways I think we all were hoping the “bad guy” might win (which he did in some ways). The other actors and special effects were frosting to the cake. I am looking forward to see if a sequel is made.

The Batman movie is breaking records because it is the only movie on the list. The film industry is experiencing a creative drought. There is nothing else to go see this summer. Last night, the IMAX version of the movie was playing in only one theater in Manhattan and I was only able to get a ticket for a 10 pm showing.

Hi Brother Asito! How was it on the HUGE screen? I love IMAX, but some movies are too intense for such an enormous screen.

My daughter tells me that the IMAX theater near her in Boston has been sold out every day since the opening. She still hasn’t seen it. Ledger’s character was a thrilling kind of evil that must be destroyed or he would continue to destroy. It takes the moral ambiguity out of admiring him because ultimately he will be stopped. It is the presence of such evil that allows a character of courage and moral conviction to emerge. Batman is the greatest of all heroes to me because he has so many other option rather than stay and risk his life and his love fighting evil. Bruce Wayne, the billionaire, could leave Gotham, and leave the people to fight the powerful evil forces of the city alone. Instead, he turns his back on a huge array of personal options - no one pays a higher price in terms of opportunity cost than Batman. He offers up his life - and sacrifices all those opportunities because he believes in justice. He is my absolute favorite. His superpowers are moral.

An enthusiastic ditto Sister Bella. What is charming is that the formidable Wonder Woman is secretly attracted to him for those very reasons you mentioned. He is a highly intelligent character with a dark side, yet he is one of the good guys. It’s nice to discuss the mythology of Batman with you.
