Is Hillary Clinton being snubbed as Secretary of State?

Veep Joe Biden travels internationally and gets credit for foreign diplomacy. Holbrooke and Mitchell report directly to the president. Mary Wells, Liz Smith, Joan Ganz Cooney, Marlo Thomas and Joan Juliet Buck sound off on whether Hillary’s getting snubbed

Mary Wells: Barack Obama Isn't Snubbing Anyone

I don’t think anyone is being snubbed. I think Obama is trying to pull in all the smart useful ones and hoping they will perform a service for their country, and it is much too early to know whether American politics can handle that.

Liz Smith: Hillary Clinton Needs All the Help She Can Get

Oh, for Pete’s sake, give the secretary of state a chance to get started before judging her in such a puerile manner. She and the vice president are longtime friends … she has known Dick Holbrooke for years (I’d say all the years he tried to become sec. of state himself) and she understands all about him and his ambitions … she is just poised to begin her very hard work putting things to rights in American diplomacy.

I think it’s childish for us to stand back and attribute crappy attitudes of jealousy and competition when none of us know exactly what is going on. But I’ll bet dollars to doughnuts, knowing Hillary Clinton, that she understands she can’t do it all by herself and that there are world problems aplenty, more than enough to go around.

She also knows that Holbrooke has his work cut out for him in trying to set things right with Pakistan. I imagine she’s rooting for him and strongly in his corner. He almost didn’t take this job; it was such a daunting one.

In this world, Hillary needs more smart people helping her, not less. I believe this State Department won’t have the chance to be a "petty competition" because there is too much at stake.

Gossip about status and rank is just the kind of boring garbage that makes the media seem to be a constant reiteration of tepid air.

Marlo Thomas: All Hands on Deck to Repair 'Reckless' Bush Nation

We have a lot of repairs to make around the world after eight years of reckless Bush diplomacy, and the more hands we have on deck, the better.

Bill and Hillary have always been a team, politically. If you can’t see that, you’re probably blinded by your assumptions about male/female roles. I’ve always thought she was smarter, and she certainly is more disciplined, than he is. From what I have read, that is also the general perception among those that know her. You have given us nothing to support your claim that she puts her ego ahead of her country. Could it be that you are just intimidated by the idea of a woman who is so much smarter, tougher and more successful than you that you need to grasp at straws to insult her?

Gee, Marina…perhaps you have problems admitting when a woman in a position of power slept her way to the almost top. Granted, it doesn’t take much to be smarter than ol’ Billy Boy, but Hillary Clinton is the womyn movement’s wrong poster girl. Political team? I don’t recall the Constitution ever mentioning a ‘team’ as the POTUS. Hillary got to her position on her back. Plain and simple. And her ego is what led her to do that. Her ego is what kept her from divorcing the Cheater in Chief early on. She wanted to use him to get into higher positions of power.

I have no interest in slinging arrows here. You made a statement that I would like expanded … you stated that Hillary is the women movement’s wrong poster girl. Legitimate opinion, but to understand where you are coming from, who do you think is a CORRECT poster girl ?

Marina: Don’t respond to people like Mr. Douglas who makes up tawdry tales ––see his post below about Hillary sleeping her way up the ladder––Hillary? His aim, which is to incite, is obviously not worthy of your time, you being one who thinks.

Phyllis, I do believe you’re right. He’s using the old worn out slur that men of his ilk have always used about women who intimidate them.

Roger, I thought your post was not only well put , but also very true. So I really don’t understand why Sibelle jumped your case Please don’t let someone else tell you which site you should follow. We welcome your post.

Thanks Beverley I have received more welcome posts than negative ones….. at least by more people…… there are a few that will probably always show their disrespect, but so many more with positive responses like yours. Thanks for taking the time

What does a little chick like you know about sources? Are you on a mission to save the Rogers of the world?

Sibelle —

Your comment is exactly the type that is criticized by many on this post as petty.  Why refer to DB as a "little chick?" except to belittle her?  As for her knowledge about sources, all regular readers of this site know that DB constantly cites other sources for facts, statements, etcetera, and posts links to web sources for her comments when available.  In short, she does not just offer opinions in a vacuum.  It is your right to disagree with her, but you should be fair, and your comments are not fair to DB.

Roger, I don’t understand the question either. It is my understanding from what I read and heard, Hillary picked both Holbrooke and Mitchell and they report to her. Hillary is the one who sent them on their assignments. This is a odd question.

Why would anyone think that Hillary Clinton is being snubbed? That is a provocative question. She’s only been head of State for 4 weeks today. And she is busy putting together whole teams, in addition to networking with other people in comparable positions all over the world, not to mention all of the people in all of the departments in the whole State Dept. I’m not sure that you all know how many of our major services come out of the State Department, so I doubt that Mrs. Clinton has given “being snubbed” much thought. Goodness, it’s all she can do to get her beauty sleep and hair appointment. And, who chose that dreadful picture! http://www.ask.com/bar?q=how+many+people+work+in+department+of+state&pag…
