Is Hillary Clinton being snubbed as Secretary of State?

Veep Joe Biden travels internationally and gets credit for foreign diplomacy. Holbrooke and Mitchell report directly to the president. Mary Wells, Liz Smith, Joan Ganz Cooney, Marlo Thomas and Joan Juliet Buck sound off on whether Hillary’s getting snubbed

Mary Wells: Barack Obama Isn't Snubbing Anyone

I don’t think anyone is being snubbed. I think Obama is trying to pull in all the smart useful ones and hoping they will perform a service for their country, and it is much too early to know whether American politics can handle that.

Liz Smith: Hillary Clinton Needs All the Help She Can Get

Oh, for Pete’s sake, give the secretary of state a chance to get started before judging her in such a puerile manner. She and the vice president are longtime friends … she has known Dick Holbrooke for years (I’d say all the years he tried to become sec. of state himself) and she understands all about him and his ambitions … she is just poised to begin her very hard work putting things to rights in American diplomacy.

I think it’s childish for us to stand back and attribute crappy attitudes of jealousy and competition when none of us know exactly what is going on. But I’ll bet dollars to doughnuts, knowing Hillary Clinton, that she understands she can’t do it all by herself and that there are world problems aplenty, more than enough to go around.

She also knows that Holbrooke has his work cut out for him in trying to set things right with Pakistan. I imagine she’s rooting for him and strongly in his corner. He almost didn’t take this job; it was such a daunting one.

In this world, Hillary needs more smart people helping her, not less. I believe this State Department won’t have the chance to be a "petty competition" because there is too much at stake.

We have a lot of repairs to make around the world after eight years of reckless Bush diplomacy, and the more hands we have on deck, the better.

I think that the long, contentious campaign created such a vacuum when it was over that it is now being filled with fake drama and fake issues. This isn’t a reality “show” it’s reality, and there are so many issues of importance at this time that merely creating fake issues is worse than bad journalism, it is irresponsible journalism. (I realize a blog isn’t ‘journalism’ but I think the point is still valid.)

Totally agree with your assessment of the vacuum and the need to fill it with fake drama and fake issues. All of "journalism" - however legit — needs "copy" to fill the hard copy page or the web page — it’s the same dilemna. And we, the "readers," find ourselves lured by headlines that create fake issues. Happens everyday.  We all need to be more aware of it and call it for what it is — MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING.

 Keep up the good work!

Oh, “The Coat of Magical Wonderfulness!” That was Rachel Maddow’s reaction as Hillary deplaned, taking her first International steps, into what will surely be, a most remarkable role as Secretary of State. Visibly moved and profoundly impressed, Maddow raved over the first sight of Hillary, descending on Asia in “some kind of super bad, technicolor dream coat, awesome lining, that is Keanu Reeves in the Matrix, meets Kimodo, meets International Super Sophisticate. We have seen the new Foreign Policy and It. Is. Bad. Ass !” The greatest threat to world peace and stability, is the world economic crisis. Andrea Mitchell traveling with the Hillary Clinton, says Hillary is expanding and enlarging the role of Secretary of State. Clinton remarked “I chose to go to Asia deliberately …the global economic crisis is the backdrop against which this visit takes place. The four nations I’ll be visiting are all members of the G-20. … I will be discussing with them the approaches that each are taking, explaining what we have just done with the passage of our stimulus bill, and seeking greater cooperation about how together we’re going to work our way through these very difficult economic times.” Hillary is also dealing with the vital issue of North Korea and their nuclear capabilities .“We do want to work through the (now stalled) Six-Party Talks, and I will be discussing with South Korea, Japan and China how best to get the negotiations back on track.” . There is so much more, that is both encouraging and fascinating about this trip and how Hillary is expanding the office of Secretary of State. We have too limited an understanding of the scope and interconnectedness of what is happening in the world. Important foundations are being laid and reinforced by Sec of State Clinton, that will have far reaching implications, both at home and internationally. Rather than any ‘snub’, Hillary is being entrusted with the very foundations that will determine the future of the world.

Great post, Deni. It would have been far more accurate (and less silly) for this thread to have been titled, “Sec. of State Clinton Meets with Asian Leaders of Troubled Economic G-20 Member Nations.” Let’s show our new Sec. of State some respect for making her own, intelligent decisions.

Or if the requirement is ‘edgy and catchy’ they could have said: We have seen the new Foreign Policy and It is bad-ass! or Hillary’s new Foreign Policy: Matrix, meets Kimodo, meets International Super Sophisticate. Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!

Anyone curious about Mrs. Clinton signing agreement for withdrawing US troops from Japan? I know that our presence has been irritating to them (to say the least) for quite some time. Hope this is a good move—for them and for us.

When C. Rice first became SoS, much was made of the fashions she wore. She seemed more America’s Spokesmodel than the top diplomat. I look at that picture, and I see a focused mind at work. This was clearly a candid shot, not a photo-op. During the campaigning, there were plenty of unflattering pictures of Her. I got sick of the pantsuits, there were some really bad ones (and endless jokes) I say some clips of her in Asia, and I thought she looks better than she has in a long time. She looked like she means business. Give ‘em heck, Hillary! I have seen some poor photo choices here, but I do not think this was one of them. From the SoS, I would rather see concentration than a parade smile.

No, it is much too soon to think that the Secretary of State is being snubbed.  The choice of President Obama to have special envoys to Afghanistan and to the Israeli/Palestine areas is a new approach to foreign policy.  I think Hillary will be the one to know if the "envoys" are being given preference by the White House.  We shall wait and see.

But one point I should like to add is that I think Hillary Clinton would have been the better diplomat to handle the Palestine/Israeli disputes.  The best plan for settlement of the issue was offered by President Clinton in the waning days of his presidency.  I think now that Chairman Arafat reneged on the deal, but at the time we were told he simply changed his mind at the last minute (pressure from Hamas?).  In any event, before he died Arafat admitted openly that he regretted not signing the agreement.  When President Bush came into office …I believe it was only within a matter of a few weeks, he said that there was no better deal to be made than the one President Clinton had made with Israel and supposedly the PLO, and that, as a consequence, he would not focus on that conflict.

I have to admit that I have wondered a bit about Hillary be over-manned a bit myself.  I don’t want her to be undercut or her power be diluted at all.  I think she brings lots to the table and I want to see her shine, shine, shine.  Lots of those folks reporting directly to the President have iron clad egos and might or probably try to elbow her around.   Kick them in the A**, Madame Secretary!!

Have you noticed that since she is overseas this week, Bill has been on every TV show but Sesame Street??  He owes her big time and someone needs to drag him out of the spotlight when she is in it.  It looks sickeningly competitive and who wants to hear him, anyway?   Lots of us grew up in addicted families, Bill!  Go to Al-anon and get rid of your unattractive behaviors, please.

President Obama clearly stated what Holbrook was to do in re. Isreal/Palestine, region. Secretary Clinton talked about Holbrook’s assisgnment, too. Now, there’s plenty of work to go around, and now, at least, we have a women who respects other cultures, conducts herself appropriately, not appearing in need of her president’s favor, and knows how to get the job done with dignity, and intellect, for all involved.

To even think the president would ostracize Secretary Clinton, is tantamount to believing that he would stupidly undermind himself.
