From my experience of many years as editor of a diferent forum with a different purpose : we do not limit the length of comments, but do not allow the bringing in, by copy+paste, of outside material. If there is interest in showing readers somthing else, a link can be inserted, but only a link with no copied+pasted text.
There are a couple of serious reasons, a) that forums are for personal thought and personally formed opinion to be expressed, and not for bringing in whatever has been thought and said elsewhere by someone else, or otherwise a forum becomes and exchanges of copies from here and there.
And b) because of copyright reasons. People copy and paste from the Net without checking what can be copied, used and not. To keep it safe and avoid trouble for the owners of the forum, better avoid the copy+paste from outside sources.
Iraq, a true heartbreak from the beginning. I try not to say “can it get any worse” because I know that it can, and it probably will. Our politicians bicker about who is at fault but no one offers a real solution. I think instead of spending bazillions of dollars on trying to get oil out of Irag, the money should be used to open the universities and send everyone to school so that they can take Communication 101. More can be done with the pen than the gun. Better yet, propose a possible solution to the wowowow panel and I bet you’ll get some interesting answers. My hope for Iraq is that we get out without completely destroying
their country as well as ours.
Suzanne, One-third of the homeless on US streets are Vietnam vets, the Agent Orange and exfoliants used in Vietnam still live in the atmosphere and contribute to the 3,000 Americans who die every day of environmental-related cancers. Vietnam is a tragedy that ruined and changed and continues to haunt tens of millions of lives. It was and remains a national disgrace. When a hero does something shameful most people are generous enough to forgive. When a hero does the same thing again, and far worse, it is unforgivable. The world will not forgive America in our lifetimes. “America” isn’t a piece of soil but a rare idea and that
has been butchered. I appreciate your optimism…and I am by nature idealistic, and alos pragmatic and know history. Perhaps we’ll survive. But we’ll never be the same.
Suzanne, your points are well taken abouot the vets being homeless. My point is that the sooner we get out the fewer will have to endure the horrors over there and (cut out losses) and unlike the doom people portray about getting out of Iraq - yes it is a bad -horrible- situation but let’s cut our losses and spare more people from additional pain and let Iraq create their own world. They do not want us there either.
One thing that troubles me about our kids is that the climate over there is so drastically different than what they’re used to. Did I hear 136 degrees in the shade one day? What is the long-term effect of that? I know we acclimate, but they’re wearing those uniforms and flak jackets and helmets and everything, so what does it do to them to be in that heat when they’re just barely grown. I am also afraid of a new generation of people who are so shell-shocked by their experiences that they can’t manage the simplest tasks of surviving when they get back home.
Mugsy, Plus the ‘signature wound’ are head injuries, many from blast, those have lifelong implications, very hard to treat and diagnose, extremely debilitating, and of course their benefits cut left and right. This unnecessary hell brought to the entire world for 5 years now….it still seems impossible, inconceivable that this could have happened…that my country did this…
Totally agree with both Suzanne’s.We must remember that an “all about me’ person got us into this mess. And an “all about me” administration keeps us there. My fear as a mother of two naval officers my future pick of president will not follow thru with what must be done to get us back on track. We are so in debt to other areas of the world,it is hard to know where to begin. My prayer is for when I place my ballot in the box,I am part of the solution.
Suzanne, there has been a recent study of the homeless, and it is less than 2% that are veterans. Many are families. Meth has had an unparalleled affect on creating homelessness. Many are children.
I think about that, too. The conventional wisdom is that everyone will just kill everyone they don’t like if we leave—chaos. Well, we already have that. Maybe it’s like kids who act worse when they know Dad will step in if they go too far. I know—that is oversimplified…but remember Rumsfeld saying it was like a bike and we were the training wheels. This war has reduced us all to imbeciles!
Ma, I pray every day that we can get out of Iraq. But my hope seeks to be falling on deaf ears. Sometime between August and November My Son and his Wife will be deployed to Iraq for the third time. They would rather stay on American land and protect us then go over to Iraq. As a mother this scares me. I no longer lister to the media, and I pray the McCain does not get voted in as president.
We need to get out of there. We have lost to much already. the price we are paying is way to high. ITNEEDSTOSTOPNOW! It really has nothing to do with us it is a political manuver for the Bush’s. We can not keep policing the whole country. Different cultures are what makes this a type of educational world. If we were all alike it would be so boring. We need to stop wasting money that could be spent in this country to help maintain living without struggling. We need to stop killing off the future of our country. Without the young nothing will survive. The yare the future of our country and the wave of progress. Simple put is Bush is leaving office so why should he really care. He started it so why not let someone else clean up the mess. It will not pleaseeveryone to withdraw but who cares at least we will be saving lives.
My biggest fear about Iraq is that we’ll involve ourselves in Iran as well, with even more disastrous results, and our grandchildren will be called on to fight in this war. My biggest hope is that the Iraqui people themselves will see the necessity of a peaceful solution, lay aside their centuries of hatred and revenge and create peace in their country. Then we can come home.
