I’d happily live in any Fred and Ginger movie — except "Vernon and Irene Castle" which did not end well. Also, "Singin’ In The Rain" would be fine with me. A perky place to live. And I had a crush on Gene Kelly.

If I could live inside a movie, it would definitely be "Indiscreet." It’s set in my favorite city in the world, London, in an oh-so-chic apartment. If I were Ingrid Bergman in that film, I’d have a lovely couple working for me, a hilariously dry brother-in-law, a sweet and caring sister, and a yacht called the “Sea Witch.” Not to mention Cary Grant, whose suits in that role were the most gorgeous and well-tailored things I’ve ever seen on a man. (My mother met him at the White House once and he told her he was wearing the same tux from the movie.) Even if I weren’t Ingrid, I’d be happy to hang around with all of them, maybe cadge a yacht ride and free tickets to one of Ingrid’s plays. I have seen that movie so many times, I feel as though I do live in it when I’m watching it, but I tend to think I’m living in lots of movies. When I was very young, I watched Natalie Wood rob banks in "Penelope" and began a short-lived career as a petty thief in my own house. After I watched Robert Redford in "Three Days of the Condor," I found myself unconsciously looking around corners before I turned them and flattening myself against walls. More recently, I remember thinking what a nice place to live "The Birdcage" would be. I loved Robin Williams and Nathan Lane and Hank Azaria, so brilliant as their houseman. I did not want to leave their cozy compound — the apartment above the nightclub, the nightclub itself with all the sweet drag queens. And of course I’d want to live in any of the "Thin Man" movies. How much fun.

Probably “All About Eve,” a cinema moment in Broadway history that I find particularly nostalgic – the 50s. In that film there is still glamour, people dress to go to the theater, George Sanders types make acerbic remarks and there are GREAT TRULY GREAT stars! (This was New York as I found it when I first arrived from Texas!)
